Age verification software confirms the age of a specific person, typically in two settings: online, for e-commerce transactions, or in person, at the point of sale (POS) kiosk for retail store settings. These solutions are commonly used to verify the ages of customers who intend to buy age-restricted goods or services such as energy drinks, alcohol, tobacco products, cannabis products, weapons, adult content, gambling products, and other similarly regulated items.
Though similar, age verification software should not be confused with identity verification software. Age verification software verifies only the age of a person ("Does this person meet the age requirements?"), whereas identity verification software authenticates a person’s identity (“Is this person who they claim to be?").
To qualify for the Age Verification category, a product must:
Verify the age of individuals
Utilize official documents or identification cards, phone checks, or other factors
Validate identification factors against public records, biometrics databases, or other relevant consumer data
