athenaOne Overview

What is athenaOne?

athenahealth is providing cloud-based services for electronic health records (EHR), revenue cycle management & medical billing, patient engagement, care coordination, and population health management, as well as Epocrates and other point-of-care mobile apps. Our suite of integrated, network-enabled services works to deliver measurable financial and clinical results for providers. The athenahealth EHR offers a homepage that allows users to review the daily schedule and patient information, manage orders, and view incoming lab results. The billing module can be used in tandem with the EHR or on its own, and features a patented and continuously updated rules engine. Medical practice management tools include visibility into daily responsibilities, custom benchmarking, proactive trends analysis, and more. Patients can utilize a patient portal to review history, pay bills, sign forms, and schedule appointments. Reminders can be delivered via phone, email, or text message; patients can even be alerted when test results are waiting in the patient portal.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

You can see some notes from other providers the patient has visited. Sometimes you can send faxes from inside the program (when it works) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

Everything else

-notes take a long time and are clunky to complete

-unable to pull forward previous dx if encounters completed by another provider. Making notes a nightmare if you're covering for someone else.

-unable to choose your own diagnosis as something different or less specific will autopopulate

-the whole check in and check out process which many practices force providers to do. Adds 7-10 mins per note

-when putting in cases while on call, defaults to on-call provider instead of the provider who is responsible for the patient

-every time you open a note from another provider, it goes to your open documents and stays there until you close it. Hence I have almost 900 open documents in my inbox.

-many more. Just get an actual emr like epic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

It's great - customizations are wonderful, work is easily shared and reassigned. Access tracking is top tier, and patient accessibility and understanding is quality. We've been very happy at all levels of care with this product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

Like all EMR, it takes some serious getting used to. Thankfully, the learning curve with this, like other Athena products, is so much less steep than with others. Taking a practice from paper to Cerner should be an olympic sport. Taking a practice from paper to AthenaOne is high school states. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

It provides an all inclusive, comprehensive workspace for literally everything we're doing within the practice home - from Telemedicine to claims management, its all there, connected, funtional and intuitive. Providers like the simplified interface that they can choose to make more complex, nurses and care partners love the customization and ability to chart quickly and effectively. From the billing side, even a non clinical person can navigate easily to find needed documents, like orders, test results, etc that may be needed to work out their end of things. What do you like best about athenaOne?

Online EMR, number of features, integrated online fax Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

Terrible business practices. signed a agreement for a percentage of my collections. After two years, Athena raised rates on me despite our agreement saying otherwise. Tried to force me to sign a different contract. Also terrible customer service. Constantly changing CSM. Terrible "enhanced billing" where you are still having to do the bulk of the work for backend and front end billing. Athena also makes it difficult to switch to a different EMR and essentially holds you hostage. Would definitely NOT recommend to colleagues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

Very poor attempts by athena to resolve issues Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

The system itself does seem to be good once it is setup, however, setup is horrible, confusing, and the "team" assigned may know less than you do about how the system works. Support after implementation is good enough, however, it does not come pre-setup with any reasonable amount of pre-formatted tools, reports, workflows, or basically anything to operate a standard medical practice. Disgusting. I can't really say I like anything about it to be honest. It is non-intuitive in workflows and you can't even get an easy to see daily dashboard of activity, payments, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

It has not benefited us to this point. We lost over $275,000 in the transition that was totally horrible, time consuming (both on me personally, my staff, and taking over eight months). I would never go onto Athena and never would I recommend it to anyone. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

AthenaOne does close loops for processes. The system intentionally directs data where it should go on clinical side. Also, it makes an effort to respond to customer concerns and ideas- which you are able to vote on in Success Community. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

All things RCM. We are an FQHC/ CHC and our business model was courted by Athena- they weren't ready then & they are still not responsive to serious concerns brought forth, to point we are financially at risk. The EHR & scheduling is fine; the billing & RCM components ( and new Dental EHR) and struggling, and customers are the ones paying ( because Athena takes first cut, regardless). I expected they would care that, for example, their system doesn't attach secondary payers- nope. Why shouldn't they? It matters when your customer is poor and secondary payer is important! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

We were forced from our previous platform. AthenaOne promised to collaborate and deliver the EHR to serve our integrated PH-BH service model. Not a reality, unfortunately.

They are working on the product to improve portal, and patient engagement in at least English/Spanish. Athena's willingness to 'hear' you is there, it's having the full expertise in nuances for either your system and/or state regs that is the problem. They have vendor partners that are supposedly strong Athena users- didn't turn out that way for us, in fact, did more damage than good even after stellar reviews from other Athena users.

We are a specialty industry with a complex delivery- and they promised the moon- so far we haven't gotten out of the Earth's orbit compared to salesmanship.

If we could separate EHR from RCM, we would be happier ( and more financially healthy I have to believe after 3 yrs on product).

Finally, it is very expensive considering all other programs we have around and integrated to get full services we need. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

I like that the interface is purple. Also, for the most part it's easy to use. I really like Athena text. The scheduling is probably the easiest part of the program. Labeling and organizing documents is pretty easy too. I also like that it doesn't take long to verify most insurances Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

Athena can make things way more complicated than they need to be. The worst thing is prescriptions. Not being able to close prescriptions and instead the only option is to deny them is honestly a nightmare. replying to patient cases is also unnecessarily difficult Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

Creating a schedule, replying to patients in a way that the message is already attached to their account, easy to navigate charts and a way for patients to easily access their charts Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

The sections in a patient record are well organized and common symptoms are available to click on, saving time on typing. I like there are pictures beside each patient name to make finding their records faster and easier. There is also a sign in page of all the providers so it is easy to keep track of who saw and participated in record keeping of the patient. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

There is lag when scrolling through the different pages of the record. It is also not easy to communicate with the health care provider when a scribe is finished with the chart or not. An improvement would be some type of clickable or written notification between the scribe and health care provider. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

Athenaone decreases burden on the health care provider by allowing a scribe to listen in on and record the patient visit while the provider is performing physical exams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about athenaOne?

The clinical side of Athena is excellent. They also work closely with their clients to grow the product and improve and modernize the workflows. The product is fairly intuitive once you start working with it. The team works hard to ensure that the community is succeeding. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about athenaOne?

We are a direct pay practice, so our metrics differ from what Athena usually watches as part of their KPIs. We've worked with Athena customer service and direct training to find ways to work around this, but we had to do it all on our own. We found workarounds to make the system work for us. It was challenging and exhausting at the beginning and during implementation, but it's worked out that we have efficient workflows, so it is all good. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is athenaOne solving and how is that benefiting you?

It allows us to keep the patient's information together - demographics, financials, appointments/scheduling, and clinical documentation all in one place. It makes the providers' lives much simpler. They spend less time documenting now that we have templates, and they can be more productive and spend more time with patients. It's also allowing us to make changes as needed "on the fly" to meet our needs as a specialty direct pay practice. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
