Electronic medication administration record (eMAR) software enables healthcare providers to manage and document medication administration for patients in real time. These systems are most commonly used by nurses, caregivers, physicians, pharmacists, and administrators in long-term care, assisted living, and post-acute care settings.

eMAR software replaces traditional paper-based drug charts and helps healthcare providers create and manage personalized digital patient profiles with medication schedules, dosages, and administration routes. It often includes barcode scanning, where nurses scan the patient’s wristband and the medication packaging to verify the “five rights" of medication administration — right patient, drug, dose, route, and time.

AI is also increasingly being integrated to provide predictive insights, such as identifying missed doses, potential adverse reactions, or PRN (as needed) medication overuse based on patient and medication history. By supporting safer, more efficient medication management, eMAR software helps reduce errors, improve regulatory compliance, ease administrative burden, and ultimately contribute to better patient outcomes.
