What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal's has designed every feature perfectly. I personally LOVE their least privilege automation. I can comfortably know that someone who was given production database access while they're oncall won't have it after their rotation. I've also heard resounding reviews from our more technical engineers on its implementation. It's definitely made for developers and admins intelligently.

Lastly, the Opal team always seems committed to our success. They follow up regularly and clearly communicate when anything (rarely) doesn't go as planned. A team of rockstars who will treat you with respect. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

I had to sit here for a while to come up with something I'm not happy with so take that into account. If there's anything I could say is lacking it would be that they aren't self service. I've heard they're working on this, but right now you have to schedule a demo to see the product which is sometimes something I'd rather not do. What I will say though, is it's well worth it to go through their process. Their success team alone dramatically improved our quality of life and honestly for such a complex organization like ours its helpful to be guided through it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Opal is helping us solve least privilege and manage our most sensitive aspects of our business. We are able to carefully manage, audit, and maintain an amazing practice around permissions. This means our teams are more productive and we close more deals by being able to focus less on SOC/SOX/ and ISO compliance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Thank you so much for the positive review! We've worked really closely with developers to ensure a seamless experience. Self-service is an active area of exploration – stay tuned for more updates!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal makes managing access to a wide range of services simple and consistant. Its UI is clear and intutive requring minial end user documentation. Functiuonality is continuously updated based on customer feedback. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

None to report. This might sound fishy, but it is the case! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Opal allows our team to grant managed access to range of services in a clear and consistent manner, to the point only one doc is needed to cover hundreds of different resuorces for end users. It has performend reliably for over a year and a half, even migrating between different kubernetes clusters with zero issues. Configuration management via Terraform has performed reliably as well. The product feels good in the hand and easy to learn. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Thank you so much Daniel! It has been a pleasure partnering with you!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal has re-thought traditional access management. They enable self-service like many products, but they take a unique approach and also provide the related capabilities (monitoring and auditing) to make it a fully-featured solution. This frees up our development teams to do more value added work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

Opal is great for developers and technical teams but can be a little difficult for non-technical end users. If they can simplify the user experience there will be no use case that they can't address! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Our primary use case is access to AWS. We have >90 AWS accounts, >60 permission sets and >150 AD groups - managing that was becoming impossible. Opal is helping us simplify the access management process for AWS as well as enable self service to get the developers out of the loop. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Yes! Freeing up dev team to actually do their work is important! We really believe in self-service. Thank you for your feedback! User experience is very top of mind for us and we will continue to raise the bar there

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal has an intuitive UI and request workflow for end users, with complete control for administrators to define multiple request flows with mutiple stages, which can be configured via Terraform IaC. The Opal team have been excellent in understanding our requirements, providing details of how Opal can meet them and in the odd case where it couldn't have added features to ensure Opal could do what we needed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

While the UI is excellent there could be more options to filter when searching through large data sets and for the search criteria to persist between page loads, for example when trying to find a specific AWS account in a list of hundreds. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Opal is allowing us to decouple our IdP from AWS, access to AWS via Opal allows an MFA challenge (which is seperate from our IdP MFA challenge) at connection time and gives users just in time access, this gives us an improved security posture in separating our business IT from our customer facing services and data. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Thank you for the feedback! We pride ourselves on being customer-centric and will continue to invest our efforts there. Filtering through large data sets is an active area of exploration – stay tuned!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal allows me to define what least privilege looks like and ensure its consistently enforced. This is the first product i've seen that enables deep, granular, zero trust access management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

Using Opal requires that administrators genuinely care about least priviledge in their organizations. The product provides all the tools necessary, but you will need to understand who owns what, setup the necessary approvers, and ramp up on the product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Opal helps us both understand, and action user access. Before using Opal engineering access was generally over-provisioned, long lived, and obscure. After switching to Opal we were able to understand exactly who had access, who needed, and why. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Our team has loved working with you and we really appreciate your consistent and thoughtful feedback! Thank you for your support!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal has been a great cornerstone for our identity and access program, enabling robust authorization controls in a super user-friendly manner. It's super easy to review and approve requests right from slack.

Opal makes a great combo with Okta, the ability to grant tiles behind certain approvals or rotating on-call schedules is amazing for reducing the risk of privileged accounts. Plus, the access review feature helps make auditing a breeze! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

The webhook functionality is great for apps that aren't behind SSO but requires some extra overhead to set up custom functions for applications to manage access which can slow down onboarding new apps. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Identity and access management, especially around privileged access to systems that require administrative approval before granting. Opal gives us an extra layer of security in ensuring least privileges when accessing systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Hey Jacob! Thank you so much for the review. We love the partnership with Merge and your feedback is noted. Custom app functionality is on our roadmap an will be released soon!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Opal isn't just another security tool that produces too many warnings. Opal has enabled us to reduce risk by minimizing privilege across Engineering, while making it easy to obtain admin when needed. So far we've used it to minimize privilege on Kubernetes, IAM roles, breakglass, self-management of low-risk accounts, OpsGenie on-call integration, and the list goes on. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

Opal needs deeper integration with AWS. Few people have the experience necessary to write even simple IAM policies for accessing protected production resources. Opal should come with automatic integration for approved privilege escalation on basically any AWS resource -- the user should be able to type "I need admin access on bucket verkada-prod-thumbnails" or "I need eksadmin on the prod cluster", and Opal will come up with a reasonable IAM policy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Hey Jon – thank you for your feedback on Opal Security. We are pleased to hear that our platform has enabled you to reduce risk by minimizing privilege across engineering while still making it easy to obtain admin when needed. We are proud to have been able to help your company in such a wide variety of ways, from minimizing privilege on Kubernetes to self-management of low-risk accounts.

We appreciate your feedback on our integration with AWS. We are always looking to improve our platform and make security as seamless as possible for our users. We will take your comments into consideration as we continue to enhance our tools.

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Onboarding a variety of access patterns (Okta groups, AWS IAM roles, SSH access) in a flow that allows both technical and non-technical users to access resources smoothly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

We leverage custom integrations with Opal, which is still an evolving part of their product. It allows us to integrate with our own internal API platforms, but it lacks stable documentation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

We built our own, in-house approvals system to track sensitive resource approvals. Opal has replaced this tool and exceeded its capabilities. We want to grant temporal access to every resource at our company, not just a handful of resources. This helps us meet PCI, SOC, and ISO compliance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Hey Matthew! Thank you for your review and we are thrilled by our partnership. We are glad to hear that our platform has helped your company onboard different access patterns smoothly, and that it has exceeded your expectations by replacing your in-house approvals system and meeting your compliance requirements. Custom integrations are a huge priority for us and we are heavily investing in documentation and functionality. Thank you for your product feedback and continued support!

What do you like best about Opal Security?

Customer Focus:

Drata's onboarding with Opal was a fantastic experience. Opal's entire team was incredibly reactive to our needs and feedback. During implementation, their sales engineer Andrew was a great resource and gave some of the best customer service we've ever had. Post implementation, they are still reaching out, meeting with us about feature requests/enhancements and giving regular product updates. Steven, Umaimah, Eugene, Kevin, Andrew, Alex and Lance are a fantastic team, and some of the best humans out there.

The Product:

Opal enhances Drata's internal IT processes:

Automating access requests by connecting to our stack and allowing employees to request access to applications, roles within applications, and Okta groups removes administrative overhead from access request IT tickets. Additionally, they have granular Github, AWS and Saleforce roles/profile access request capabilities. At Drata we utilize Opal in Slack; access requests via CLI are also available for heavy engineering shops. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Opal Security?

We are looking forward to working with Opal on additional features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Opal Security solving and how is that benefiting you?

Security automation is the name of the game at Drata -- and Opal fits the theme by allowing ephemeral/time-based access requests with auto-revocation after a specific time-grant. Don't want to give permanent access to admin accounts that require maintenance? Grant just enough time to complete the job with no tracking to downgrade privileges later. Additionally, Opal allows you to send alerts for access grants to a Slack channel for easy logging and monitoring. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Eugene Ling of Opal Security

Hey Shannon! Thank you for writing the review. I'm glad to hear that you had a fantastic experience with Opal's product and team! We are definitely looking forward to working with you on our product roadmap. We really appreciate all of your support and feedback!
