Powerful Enterprise Data Modeling, Held Back by UI and Performance Hiccups

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is its strong support for complex data modeling and governance. It handles large, enterprise-scale models reliably and offers clear visualizations of data structures, which makes it easier to understand relationships and dependencies. Its forward and reverse engineering capabilities are also very helpful, since they let you keep databases and models in sync with minimal effort. On top of that, the integration with data governance tools supports consistency by reinforcing standards and keeping documentation aligned across projects. Overall, it’s a solid choice for organizations that need structured, scalable, and well-documented data modeling.

Visual Clarity with Room for Improvement

I use erwin Data Modeler mainly to design, understand and communicate data structures. I appreciate how it solves problems around clarity, consistency, and communication in data work. I like the visual clarity of data structures that it provides, as it helps in fast understanding with fewer mistakes. Reverse engineering is a huge time saver when onboarding, and impact analysis ensures safer changes and better decisions. I also enjoy its forward engineering, impact analysis, and data lineage visibility features.

Powerful Modeling & Reverse Engineering, But UI and Performance Need Modernization

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is how it makes complex database design easier to understand through clear, well-organized visualization. My favorite feature is reverse engineering, because it lets me create database schemas from models or build models from existing databases—something many other tools don’t handle very well. It also supports working with stored procedures, triggers, and views, and it includes version control so I can track different builds over time. On top of that, it generates accurate DDL scripts, which saves me time and helps reduce errors. I’ve also used its automation features, which speed up my work. More recently, it introduced GenAI-based automation, and that has made the overall process even easier and more efficient.
