Coming from another competitor CMS I can honestly say this is a million miles better, faster, cheaper (it's free), open source and efficient. As a developer I'm more productive and happy! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Direction of front end technologies and headless. Sort of neglecting (or feels like) their roots as a dotnet CMS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

We use Umbraco for all new web projects. Compared with several other content management systems I have used, Umbraco's back end experience is far superior. The hierarchical presentation of site content closely matches the way our site architects map out the content of a site. This in turn, makes intuitive sense to editors as they update the site.
There is a good balance between presenting enough information to understand and execute a task and, on the other hand, keeping the interface simple to avoid overloading the user with options. This is true for both the development and editing experiences. Help text is easy to configure, and presented in a way that helps a new user understand an input field when they first encounter it, but doesn't get in the way of experienced editors. Input fields can be grouped intuitively in multiple ways to aid understanding.
Extensive online documentation makes implementation relatively easy. It is possible and usually quite easy to add custom controls for editing content. I've built icon selectors, data-driven drop-downs, and a spreadsheet-style tabular data control among others. Dashboards can be created to provide a presentation of custom data for more in depth integrations with outside data. Content Apps allow yet another way to customize an editor's interaction with content. I've used these for things like triggering email sends from an "event" page or exporting data for use in an external system.
For those using their hosting platform, Umbraco Cloud, customer support is done by way of a chat widget in the cloud interface and/or by email. The two systems can be used interchangeably. Support staff is always helpful and friendly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
As with many content management systems, Umbraco is always evolving. This is generally a good thing, but recently required us to rebuild entire websites because of a shift to a new platform (.NET Core). On top of that, the next version will require us to revamp the back end because they are changing the underlying infrastructure for customizations. I'm hoping these two significant changes are followed by a more stable upgrade cycle in the future.
Their timeline for long term support (LTS) versions is, in my estimation, too short. I don't like the idea of having to do a significant upgrade on a website every two years because the major version of the site is no longer supported, which opens the site up to any newly discovered security vulnerabilities. I realize the pace of the development of new web technologies is generally pretty breakneck, but I'm a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Longer LTS cycles would be a selling point for any CMS, I think. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Umbraco is probably the most flexible and composable CMS out there on the market. Not only is it extremely easy to use as a developer and CMS user, but the level of integration and customisationg is unparralled.
Umbraco is able to be added into any environment as a rock-solid option for hosting content, and can be extended to match any requirements that get thrown at it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Out of the box lacks features - requires bespoke development to build the site up to a usable level for most situations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It's quite easy to understand and everything is well explained with comments aside of the boxes. The CMS is fast. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Sometimes it is not perfectly clear where a modification will take action or not, if I modify the order of promotions in the promotions section, if at the same time in the home page - promotion section area - I have a different order set, that change will not take action because it goes in conflict with the "genitor" page, hp.
That is correct! But maybe an error message/or explanatory pop-up would help the user, I guess.
Sometimes the image size for picture suggested are not correctly written/slightly different than what actually would be needed/perfect. (The information displayed on the side of the image boxes I mean).
Sometimes the image in the banners on the top of a landing page is displayed with a dark layer over it, like a fading... and that is not possible to deactivate.
The position of a title and subhead on a banner, is not possible to be moved e.g. top-right/top-left bottm-right/bottom-left. Before, I guess with a previous version of the CMS (or different one) it was possible and was very comfortable to have that, I think. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Umbraco has a great community is there to help you figure things out. It feels very responsive and easy to navigate. There are alot of users and a marketplace to find other useful add ons. The interface allows us to find what we need quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Currently we have access to the CMS side and not the server side with our host so it can take time to add a new feature that hasn't been provided but it is not a fault of Umbraco but with how we have things setup with the host. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
In starting up my digital consultancy, I needed a CMS that was easy to use for both clients and myself as a developer. It is easy to integrate & implement across multiple clients. The Umbraco HQ team are always friendly and responsive to requests & feedback. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Generally the system is fantastic. There were some teething issues educating clients about the Umbraco 7 eol, but I think their future roadmap is clear & concise, so this shouldn't come as such a shock to clients moving forward. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Very simple and straightforward to understand how to use the website editing tools. Allows for quick and efficient updates to be made which in my current role is beneficial as it is one less thing to worry about.
During busy periods I may be using the website editing on Umbraco several times a day and due to the ease of use I am able to do these in no time and get on with the rest of my work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Limited customisation options with the version of Umbraco I access.
Some tools, such as editing a central blcok, can be dififcult when you have to include a lot of information/tables as some of the information is cut off in the small editing box now provided.
Difficulty adding/accessing images to use on webpage edits. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Umbraco is an incredibly flexible CMS system. Their community is excellent, and as a partner with Umbraco, we have always been pleased to use their platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There aren't many downsides to Umbraco, but one of the few is when it is not used as intended. For example, if developers choose to use plugins that are not designed for Umbraco, it can lead to issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Umbraco is likely one of the most flexible and customizable CMS systems on the .NET platform, allowing developers to create a tailormade experience for the content editors maintaining a website or application based on the CMS.
While Umbraco primarily considered a website platform, it is however not limited to that, as it can be used as a base for many other solutions ranging from apps, webshops, inventory management, internal tooling and many other things.
Its flexible API allows for easy integrations with external APIs to enrich content and enhance the editor experience. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Allowing for so much customization also allows inexperienced developers to deliver bad solutions and customer experiences due to less guardrails being in place. The way that many things are made simple, can lead to developers building solutions that seem to work, but when needing to scale - simply aren't made for this due to lack of a proper underlying architecture. i like how flexible umbraco is for example it allows the user to create data types and data types within data types. it has makes it easy to reuse documents when creating multiple pages. and the user interface is very simple and clean. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
umbraco was the first cms ive used so i found the learning curve a bit steep at the very beginning, there are some good tutorials online that helped but the community isnt very big but hopefully that can change with time Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Umbraco is the perfect system to develop and manage websites, especially if the running of the site will be undertaken by non-technical personnel.
The power of the platform is matched by the ease of use that you can implement in the content management for users. There's no limit to the type or size of website you can develop with Umbraco, I have been using it for over 15 years to develop global high traffic websites.
Umbraco Cloud is the perfect introduction to Umbraco, especially for those with limited IT resources as you can quickly spin up an instance without hosting your own infrastructure. Plus you get access to their superb customer support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Honestly I could not name many things I dislike about Umbraco. If I had to name a downside, it would be that sometimes there can be a steep learnng curve for new technical users, but this again is offset by the supperb support and ease of integration. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
