Let me now confess something. I came from the world of case sensitive languages, and I too struggled with this. Here are a few tips that I hope help:

- keywords prior to the first pipe are always case insensitive since we index them that way

- literal strings after that, e.g. 'where field1 contains "foo"' are case sensitive

- field names are insensitive, even the built-in ones, _sourcehost and _sourceHost both work the same

- operators are case sensitive. Speaking of which, here are two to help normalize your data to be all upper or all lower which can make life easier: https://help.sumologic.com/?cid=1024
