Microsoft SharePoint Pricing Overview

MS Sharepoint was sold as the least expensive thing on the market that would avoid license fees, high annual support payments to a 3rd party, and be easily customizable to our own needs. Our deciding body wanted the cheapest price and the fastest deployment, and Microsoft-direct support if anything went wrong. The group bit on that, as the selling party described all other ECM or DMS systems as tyrants with huge licensing and support costs. We found out all promises were un-true, and that we fell into the "MS Sharepoint Trap" which we're now told, a lot of unsuspecting companies do. Sharepoint has no capture or scanning system, you have to go out to maybe a dozen available 3rd-party products and buy those a a significant cost to have a good data capture/inclusion operation so that was not good. The workflow in Sharepoint is almost non-existent, so that is also handled by 3rd party products you have to buy and snap-on from either Kodak, Knowledgelake or PSIGEN we learned, that cost more -- so not good. Sharepoint's full-text search and library sizes are un-specifically iimited. As you over 200K-250K files in any given library, the performance starts to diminish rapidly, for a web application this is also very bad. In fact, when you put the cost of MS Sharepoint, support, the constant needed professional coding services just to keep it growing and working, and any custom workflow or database extensions to it, MS Sharepoint costs about 400% more than other less expensive ECM systems on the market that already include everything you need. We've now found about 4 such systems we will probably be switching to in the near future. Their licensing costs and annual support fees, in reality, turned out to be at least 300% less expensive that what we put out to make Sharepoint work decently over 4 years.
