Cerbos Overview

What is Cerbos?

Cerbos is an open-source access governance solution that helps businesses manage authorization for applications. It is a policy-based runtime authorization system that allows developers to implement and manage fine-grained access control. The platform offers a centralized management system for role-based access control (RBAC) and attribute-based access control (ABAC) policies. This approach enables organizations to define access control rules in a single source and manage them centrally, while the authorization decisions are made locally for low-latency performance. Additionally, Cerbos' open-source nature, combined with its API-based plug-and-play approach, allows it to be a flexible solution capable of adapting to changing business needs and regulatory requirements. Business Benefits of Cerbos Authorization Compliance with Security Standards: Cerbos is an ideal solution for Zero Trust Architecture. By externalizing authorization policy management, organizations can meet least-privilege access standards while keeping policy maintenance simple. The stateless design ensures that no request is inherently trusted, and always evaluated at runtime. Cerbos was also designed with data privacy standards in mind, operating solely within your environment and avoiding external dependencies. Cerbos’ Human-readable policies and audit logs make it easier to demonstrate compliance with security and data protection standards including HIPPA, GDPR, SOC2, PCI DSS, ISO27001, and CCPA. Collaborate Effectively with Diverse Stakeholders: Cerbos Hub allows non-developer stakeholders to interact with authorization policies without touching the application code. Users have found that the YAML format provides a common language that can be shared between technical and non-technical stakeholders, clarifying conversations about how business requirements can be translated into authorization policies in the application. Save Months of Developer Time: By decoupling authorization logic from application code, policy updates that might take weeks or months to completely implement can be deployed in minutes. Reclaiming that time for developers means your team can release features and address customer needs faster. Flexible Deployment Options, Pre-built Integrations and SDKs Cerbos is designed to adapt to your existing architecture. Cerbos supports authorization across environments—on-premise, cloud, Kubernetes, serverless setups. Cerbos Hub users can also deploy embedded PDPs on device, in-browser, and in serverless environments using our WASM bundle. We offer SDKs for almost any language, and pre-built integrations for popular frameworks. Reliable Support: Software architects and developers will find support in our Slack Community from other Cerbos users and our own engineers. Users can also book time with our engineers to talk through their questions over a video call.

What do you like best about Cerbos?

I’m a copywriter, not a developer, so when I wanted to build an AI assistant to optimize my workflow and help others do the same, I brought on a freelance developer to help me out.

After we got my AI assistant architecture & features lined up, I wanted to have a proper security setup with roles and permissions. My freelance suggested Cerbos’ open-source product, and I’m so glad I listened to him. It integrated with the open-source authentication solution I chose and I was able to write permissions in plain English and my developer implemented them as soon as I gave him the rules.

The whole thing was much easier and faster than I expected, which was great. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Cerbos?

My experience was really smooth, and I can't think of anything that caused me problems. It just worked. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Cerbos?

The best thing about Cerbos is how easily I can tweak access control logic without having to even touch the codebase. It runs decoupled from the codebase, and with the Playground that they offer, I can see in real-time, what are the implications of my changes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Cerbos?

The RBAC Policy Generator can have a little more functionality. Currently I am able to write basic RBAC policies, but as we need to write more complex policies, adding some AI support which can draft policies can help a lot. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Cerbos solving and how is that benefiting you?

Cerbos is simplifying access control for developers, and it completely changes the way I used to write authorization logic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
