I continuously use this tool for tracking and analysis of websites. Semrush shows the total traffic of a website, indicating when traffic goes up or down, how many keywords appear in search results with their positions, and what types of keywords our competitors use. What I like most about Semrush is how comprehensive it is as an all-in-one SEO and digital marketing platform. For me personally the market insights are the most valuable element. While I always take it with a degree of skeptisism having a way to compare and benchmark our performance vs the market and understand where our competitors are winning (or losing) is immensely valuable. I find the interface can be very tricky to navigate, often even if you have the right access/license it can be hard to navigate to the area you're trying to get to. Keyword research depth – it reveals not only volume, but search intent, keyword difficulty, SERP features, and what competitors are already ranking for. This helps with strategy decisions.

Competitor analysis – you can see instantly what competitors rank for, their paid ads, backlinks, and content gaps. This is a huge time-saver.

Site Audit – very useful. It not only points out problems, but tells you what to fix first and why it’s important.

Backlink tools – easy to monitor new/lost backlinks, toxic backlinks, and compare backlink profiles.

Content & SEO writing tools – very useful for aligning content with search intent and preventing thin or overly optimized content.

I resubscribed to Semrush after having used it briefly in the past when I had an assistant helping me. This time, I intended to use it myself as a solo small business owner. Within two days of resubscribing, it became very clear that I did not have the time, technical background, or bandwidth to use the platform effectively.

I contacted customer support almost immediately, explained that I had not used the tool, and asked for a refund. I was polite, transparent, and acknowledged that this was technically a resubscription, even though my previous use had been with help and this was my first attempt to use it independently.

Despite the request being made within two days, my refund was denied because the subscription was month-to-month rather than annual. The case was escalated internally and then closed as “final,” with no reconsideration possible.

While I understand companies have policies, this experience felt particularly rigid given:

• The extremely short timeframe (2 days)

• The lack of actual product use

• The reality that Semrush is heavily marketed to small business owners, despite having a very steep learning curve

This platform may work well for experienced SEO professionals or teams, but in my experience it is not beginner-friendly and not forgiving to solo business owners who quickly realize it’s not the right fit.

I really value Semrush for its massive database and unparalleled insights into semantic keywords. It helps us make informed decisions on content and strategy. The integration into our industry is excellent, and it has a long-standing understanding of what SEO metrics are necessary. I use Semrush for keyword research and backlink analysis and find it very useful for identifying both spammy and high-quality backlinks. I like that keywords in Semrush are based on real search data, rank quickly in Google, and provide accurate traffic details. Additionally, I use Semrush for keyword and topic research, including topical authority, which helps improve my website's SEO and ranking in Google search results within one month. SemRush is a powerful tool. This can be quite daunting for first time users. I think there are ways to simply things such as Add Keywords where you are able to just add keywords., Or you can use a competition analyser to see what your competitors are using and then use those.

As a fast-paced video production crew, we’ve noticed that potential clients aren’t just doing standard Google searches for “best commercial video agency” anymore. They’re asking ChatGPT or Gemini or they’re relying on those Google AI Overviews.

What I really like about Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit is that it finally gives us a way to track whether these AI bots are actually mentioning our agency or citing our case studies. Instead of flying blind, we can check our brand visibility score and see which prompts make our name show up. That makes it much easier to tweak our website content, because we know what questions we need to answer clearly so the AI engines pick up our information and surface it for people looking for top-tier video work. The biggest bummer is that, since Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is still a fairly new frontier, the metrics can sometimes feel a little generous or hard to treat as absolute truth. Semrush gives you a strong visibility score, but it reads more like a directional indicator than a 100% guarantee that every person typing a prompt is seeing our agency’s name in their specific generated response. It can also get pricey if your agency is just trying to dip its toes into AI search, and explaining the real ROI of “AI visibility” to the rest of the team can be a tough sell when you can’t always point to an immediate, direct sale the way you can with regular pay-per-click ads.
