One of my favorite features of Scale Computing’s HC3 platform is how unbelievably fast you can clone or snapshot a VM. While writing this, I am cloning a VM in my old VMware environment, and it is 67% done after two hours. I just cloned the same VM in my Scale cluster in less than a minute!
You can easily clone a VM to test an update and roll back if necessary. This same cloning technology can replicate VMs to another Scale server for DR purposes. It is extremely easy to use.
The UI in Scale is very user-friendly and provides all the needed information at a glance. You will see a view of all RAM, Disk, IOPS and CPU across the cluster and instantly know the cluster's health. On the same screen, you can also see how each VM is doing with its CPU, Disk, IOPS and network traffic.
You do not have to set up RAID or configure LUNs for your storage. Once the cluster is set up, create or import the VMs you need up to the limits of your cluster. Scale manages where the data is stored and which hosts will run the VM.
Scale Computing has built-in support tunnels that can be activated when needed. Scale engineers can then access your system to help with any troubleshooting. Once they are done, turn off the tunnel. You do not have to set up a remote-control session on your PC and let them control your screen. You can be working on other things while they work behind the scenes. One thing to consider with VMware is you can purchase your hardware from many different sources. When moving to Scale Computing, you only have Scale Computing as a vendor choice. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Every step of the process has been straight forward and easy to follow. Excellent documentation allowed me to install, configure and build my first VM without using the supported onboarding process.
Excellent interface show performance stats at a glance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The migration process took a little more to understand, coming from a VMWare background. Maybe some changes to explain the process flow would be beneficial. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The platform is quick to learn if you are new to virtualization. Creating, cloning and restoring VMs is fast and easy to do. Creating and scheduling snapshots is also easy. Mounting a snapshot to recover data quickly is hassle-free. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It would be nice to access more detailed performance data through the dashboard. That performance data is available; However, you need help from support to generate a report with that data. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I have been a big fan of this product as I cannot manage our VMs without it and I appreciate the flexibility it brings when it comes to VMs and the constant updates. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It would be better if we can brand the product with our own logo. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The system just works. Snapshots are a breeze, and spinning up a clone is very easy and FAST! The licensing and configurations is simple and straight forward as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
That we didn't find it sooner. We were on the VMware boat for years till seeing Scale Computing. VMWare was just messy and individual hosts unless you paid for other modules. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It is reasonably simple to set up and run servers/pcs. Being able to scale virtual machines is almost too easy. It makes throwing hardware at an issue a simple solution. Although helpful in some cases. The built-in recovery from node failure works very well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
We have found issues with high volumes of small files and response times. Not a big problem; we have had to make sure the servers we put on the Scale systems are a good fit. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Scale HCI solution is an all-in-one system that contains many features. The best feature is its simplicity. I used many solutions over my tenure and never really felt like I had a strong handle on how to fully utilize them. The UI puts everything you need in the fore front and it was very easy to understand immediately. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There's no ability to copy and paste from the local machine to a VM and you are limited to using their properiety console to view local VMs. Regardless, it is extremely useful. Their customer portal needs some work as finding some resources can be difficult. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The interface is excellent; it's simple and easy to see the overall status of your VMs at a glance. Creating, adding, copying, and deleting VMs couldn't be simpler. It's incredibly intuitive, and after your initial overview with support, you don't typically need to read documentation pages to dive in.
The recovery options have already saved us from a server issue. Their support and community online are a little bare-bones, but I've always been able to find what I need or get the help I need. Their support has always been friendly as well, and generally go out of their way to help even if they don't know the answer. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Some of the recovery and backup options are not integrated into the platform as nicely. They use a third-party application (Acronis) for backup and recovery. It's not a dealbreaker, as it still sits on the application, but it has to be managed separately.
We also get notifications from time to time that snapshots cannot complete successfully. It typically takes work to get these working properly, and we had to create many separate schedules. I wish this were just an option that could be enabled, as it appears to be a common troubleshooting item with their support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Our complete data center environment runs on Scale, including our SQL platform. We have 40+ VMs running multiple RDS servers, WAP,
file servers, etc., on 4 Scale clusters. The setup was straightforward and takes up very little space on the rack. Happy with the performance
thus far. The support team has been quick to respond and very knowledgable Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The copy and paste function from our local machine to a VM is challenging and would be very useful Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I feel that Scale Computing is a great "modern" platform for servers and virtual machines, in the sense that most everyday needs are right at your fingertips in an easy-to-consume and visualized fashion. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
As long as you are familiar is virtual machines and how they work, things are nice, but the process was complex and support is lacking. There were issues getting things migrated into the platform, but the main issue was lack of in-client support. I understand that maybe the in-client support is currently under repair, but the fact we didn't know beforehand, and there wasn't a notice in the client is an issue.
When trying to contact support through the client, nothing would load past the initial splash page of the client. If we didn't have contact(s) to call, we might still be having issues now. Even our first contact's number didn't work out.
After finally getting in contact with someone, the process was smooth, so that was good. But in no way should it be that difficult to get in contact with someone for support. It may very well have been terrible timing with the client being down and our local contact being unavailable, but that doesn't change what actually happened. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
