Magento is kind of like a DIY...you do not have a great "customer service" option if something goes wrong, and if you have a ton of products then something is bound to go wrong. Needs to run on a powerful webserver to get the required response times. Every Magento expert I turned to told me I needed hours and hours to do each task I asked. Was very frustrating and in the end I learned to do it myself although there is certainly need for a tech person in the background and available to answer questions and help out where needed. Although it is flexible and customisable, the Magento platform is overly complex and it's greatest strength - the huge support of third-party developers - is also it's greatest weakness. There is no central support and if Magento of any of its TP components break down, you are on your own.
