No matter how you look at it Magento is the most feature-rich out of the box and scalable platform there is on the market. You could spend weeks, countless hours, and thousands of dollars playing with the other platforms out there but in the end, they won't hold up to Magento when it's built right.
Almost limitless configurations, open source, tiered pricing groups, product scheduling, product staging & preview, grouped products, bundled products, single page dynamic checkout, full page caching, RMA, shipping, inventory management, and more right out of the box. It does require a developer even if you're savvy enough to get it up and running on your own and you install and set up all your extensions you're going to run into what we call (conflicts), some people call bugs. That developer is going to come in handy and they're worth the money because they can get things fixed relatively quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Magento Open Source comes fully loaded with all the essentials needed to get an ecommerce operation up and running. It's also pretty much limitlessly customizable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Learning to develop and customize within the Magento ecosystem is difficult and takes time. All the extra features can slow it down as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The powerful capabilities that can withstand companies with hundreds of products and variations. Magento is open source which is great for continued work on code for the platform to get better and better. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Magento is kind of like a DIY...you do not have a great "customer service" option if something goes wrong, and if you have a ton of products then something is bound to go wrong. We experience a lot of users that go to checkout and they get the "circle of death" spinning loader that does not allow them to check out. It is an issue that happens now and then but too often than we would like and who knows how much money was lost due to that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I love how user-friendly it is. I had very little training when I started and it was still enough to perfectly navigate the software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I have not come across any downsides yet. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Powerful, many advanced features and of course open source so no pesky monthly fees. Excellent multilingual and multistore support. A large pool of Magento experts around the world who can help. Some excellent themes available for purchase at a reasonable fee and a wide range of plugins to extent functionality. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Needs to run on a powerful webserver to get the required response times. Every Magento expert I turned to told me I needed hours and hours to do each task I asked. Was very frustrating and in the end I learned to do it myself although there is certainly need for a tech person in the background and available to answer questions and help out where needed. This is not a plug and play system that you can setup and just let run. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It's a great and versatile eCommerce platform, which gives plenty of flexibility and has support for a vast amount of features and products. Being open source, you have carte blanche to change whatever you want and are only limited by your skillset and imagination. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Although it is flexible and customisable, the Magento platform is overly complex and it's greatest strength - the huge support of third-party developers - is also it's greatest weakness. There is no central support and if Magento of any of its TP components break down, you are on your own.
It also becomes way too problematic if you have a large database. In our experience, a large MySQL database gives rise to a myriad of speed and indexing issues. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Flexibility. To create your website, Magento is one of the best platform that gives you design flexibility. Also it is a great platform for SEO. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Unless you are a trained programmer, it is hard to customize and make a use. It requires a certain programming skill. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Magento was always my go to platform for an ecommerce, easy to use and easy to find free apps in the marketplace. An excellent way to start building a new ecommerde business withouth spending too much money Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Magento v2 is now complex to install and maintain, you almost need a technical expert to support you.
Lot of security to maintain, otherwise you will be hacks pretty fast
V2 is extremely slow compare to v1 Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
