So one thing to understand is that the core of our AI model is long-term memory, which is comprised of conversations, documents, websites, and any external knowledge over time. The problem arises only when it comes to keeping the uploads of existing data and syncing of external knowledge robust and up-to-date.
We were evaluating building in-house solutions based on Langchain, but it was a lot harder than we initially thought. There were bursts of workloads during ad-hoc times, upload speed was not reliable, and the setting up of an entire system was very time-consuming. What we like most about Carbon is kind of like this one-stop-shop for all of our data-connection concerns, at a reliable speed and a reasonable cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Something we were hoping to see them implement in the future is more transparency and options in their pricing plans. I think that the clients that Carbon targets will be in many different situations and would like some flexibility in their pricing options for both good and bad times. I think if they published their prices online, it would attract a lot more businesses to give them a try. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
They’re such a simple company yet so effective and solve such a big problem. At first glance, they’re responsible for connecting the external data to train AI, and you’re like why can’t companies just do that themselves. Well the thing is that for many of these new AI companies, making a significant investment for engineers to develop connections to so many sources of external data is expensive and very risky especially if they’re cash strapped. Why would you spend months and massive amounts of money to set one up yourself when you can reach out to Carbon and they can handle it for you? Even if you do set one up in-house, you might have to spend more to update it to all of the new programs that roll out from time to time. Kind of a no-brainer for me. Carbon’s downside is that the pricing is against you if your company has few customers using your product, but high usage per customer because of how their plans work. Its designed for companies that have many customers but low usage per, which means that they’re missing out on a chunk of the market. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
They emerged during a time when AI has been more prevalent than ever, and their mission to accelerate that process by allowing their customers to focus solely on the AI design by handling the data connector and training piece has probably made a significant impact on the industry that people might not realize. So while their slack-based support is nice, we’re more of a traditional company that prefers the “old-school” method of a phone call. Having text support is nice, but we wish there were resources for direct contact with their company for that human component. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
As cliche as it might be, I think I like their team the most. From what I’ve seen, they are a relatively small but exceptional group of individuals who have made faster progress than probably an entire division at a larger company. They have rolled out updates several times a week, started bugfixing any issues we found within minutes, and have a great attitude growing and improving. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I wish they provided a course of some sort to train our team on how to use their product. There’s a certain onboarding learning curve if you don’t have any technical experience, and I think if they offered some module as a guide for maybe a product manager, it could save our developers more time. So we were one of the early adopters of Carbon which may be a bias since it is likely the reason why our favourite part of their company is their responsive support network. In the beginning, there were several bugs and issues with their tools, but each time we pointed them out in the Slack channel, a member of their team would respond almost immediately (even at 2am once!) and the issue would be resolved the same day. I don’t know if the other companies have had the same experience with this customer experience, but we are very satisfied with ours. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The one thing I might point out is that oftentimes there might be some processing delays throughout the day probably during periods where they are experiencing some more demand. I would suggest that they come up with a long-term solution to address this as they take on more clients. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The best part about working with Carbon is likely their constant innovation and adaptation. Several times a week, my team would receive updates form them on new features and programs, and the various different integrations that the offer. Additionally, they are very responsive and accommodate special requests all the time, such as that one day where we had more usage than usual and needed a character limit extension. When we first got set up, it was a bit more confusing since our team didn’t all have a strong technical understanding. It took a while to get used to all of the features and fully deploy their product to improve our AI chatbot. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
My favourite part is probably the diverse and flexible amount of programs that Carbon is able to provide us to train our model. For instance, at first, we were using the common webscraping tools for GDrive and OneDrive, but eventually, we unexpectedly had some applications with Notion and Slack as well, but Carbon already had those set up when we needed them. If we have new programs, we usually just send them a message and they are probably happy to set that up for the other companies as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I wish there was some sort of document that compiles all of the available features that Carbon has to offer so that we know what we can and cannot use them for. They also send us a lot of updates which can sometimes be hard to keep track of, so maybe some sort of organized system for that would help as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Our favourite part about Carbon was probably how convenient their solution is. When creating our LLM, we tried creating a data connector system ourselves, but it’s a bit more tricky than we had initially thought, mainly because of the sheer amount of programs we would have to set up to be compatible with (not to mention it’s probably going to change over time), and that we were a relatively new startup and didn’t have much cash to spare. But when they reached out to us, their product was very streamlined since it integrated all of those programs that we used into one common API and all we needed to do was have our product manager use their portal and spend a week on how to use all of the features with the help of their support team and our developer. It’s only been a few months so nothing yet. Everything has been going smoothly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Something that I think really distinguishes Carbon from the other companies out there is that they will customize their programs to your requests. Each time we messaged them about the feedback we have received from our users, their team always adjusts accordingly and develop new API and UX improvements that improve our business and our customer experience. I feel that even if we suggested for them to develop an integration for a new program, they would probably do it within a few weeks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I wish that they published the fact that they allow free trials on their website. We were initially wary to try it because we didn’t want to pay for something that we might not use, but they offered a trial period, which I think they would probably get a lot more potential customers if businesses knew about that. Contrary to some of the other reviews on here, my favourite part about Carbon is probably their pricing. They charge based on the content processed than the number of connectors, which was beneficial for us since we had many customers but each customer doesn't have too high of a usage. The most important part for our company was having a data connector that was affordable, and it was a lot cheaper to have Carbon handle all of that than having to set up that system ourselves. I think that might also be their strategy, which is to create value in providing a more affordable option in that piece of using external data to train LLMs. We’ve saved many multiples of what we spent according to our estimates. One thing I do think they can do better at is having a more clear support system. By that I mean I wish there was some sort of page that they had where they could answer common questions (FAQs maybe?) without our team having to send them a message each time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
