Hands down the worst agency for background checks.

They spent three weeks trying to verify my criminal record in Santa Cruz County. I drove all the way to Santa Cruz to find out that higherright has never once contacted the appropriate dept, and that dozens of people have been coming in for the same issue.

Every county is different, and higherright had no idea know how get this info from Santa Cruz County.

When I spoke to hireright's customer service, they told me that they had "researchers" physically going to the county offices to get criminal records.

First off, that's the most suboptimal process for today's day and age. Second off, the clerk at Santa Cruz County office said they had never once seen anyone physically pick up records from their office for an employee background check. The customer service rep either had no idea what she was talking about... or was lying to my face.

We use HireRight for employee screening and drug testing. I like that it is easy to use, signing up an employee is easy, all you need is the name and email address, choose the service and send it off. Their customer service leaves much to be desired. It is very frustrating trying to contact them, chat especially, and when you finally do it is like pulling teeth. It takes forever to get a straight answer. The most frustrating part is if you are transferred to a new person for help you have to explain everything all over again. If an employee has an international background their service can be a bit slow, based on the difficulty of getting the information, but what I find frustrating is when they ask an employee fot documentation I have to chase hireright to review the documents they send, they can sit there for days without review and really delay the process. HireRight does not understand the concept of an Independent Contractor and even after speaking to customer service numerous times, they still do not understand which is delaying the process significantly. We have had a few issues with drug testing. Candidates have had exams canceled because something was messed up at the lab (i.e. the number on the paperwork was different from what was on the sample). So, the candidates had to provide a separate sample even if it was the lab's fault. I think it is important to partner with collection sites that are well trained on the processes. Lying to customers trying to get employment as to why there background checks are delayed, sometimes for months. This might be the worst background check experience I have ever been through. You fill out information for each employer within the lookback window and then proceed to wait while their team neglects to verify anything. This leads to you as the candidate having to find and upload documentation (W-2, etc.) for every employer in your work history. Literally everything - service is terrible as a whole. Applicants keep receiving requests via email that they would need to provide additional information about documents that they have provided HireRight with already, the researchers there seem to be unable to verify even the most basic document.
