It's a pretty good deal for a free version of matlab. Although getting help for problems in code was harder and more difficult than matlab.

Octave – Just like Matlab if you know already know Matlab
Octave responds almost identically to Matlab and was designed to be Matlab compatible. And it's free, which is a big hit.
