There are a lot of ways to build efficiencies with CaseWare Working Papers especially utilizing CaseView documents' rollforward properties, linking, carryforwards, etc. I appreciate the ability to jump to workpapers that you know the reference for also. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Set up of documents is very time-consuming, and there is a lot to learn with the software. There is always numerous ways to do things and you typically figure out the harder ways first and then learn the easier ways in time or from a heads up from someone else. It can get messy when two people are in one workpaper at once and making changes simultaneously to then have to go back and decide which copy to keep and then trace back to make any needed updates from the other version. It's very easy to use, easy to sign off workpapers, easy to move files around. Good to have the trial balance in the and link the workpapers to each account. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It's pretty basic, not great for when you need comprehensive audit programs - have to load them in manually instead of being generated by the system. Was good for review engagements but not great for audit engagements. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There is nothing that I like about this software. All modern solutions far outclass this antiquated technology. Signoffs work? I guess that's a plus? But they only work if the file syncs properly which has failed on multiple occasions. I would only recommend this product if you had absolutely no other option to retain and protect audit workpapers. The product fails at the following:
- Automation and clean seamless connection of documents and workpapers
- Syncing is not consistent (there are tons of sync errors, file corruption, errors
- Collaboration on files cannot be facilitated. Only one person can make edits at a time. This is not efficient.
- Lockdown procedures are tedious
- It seems like when the entire audit team is in the file, the probability of sync issues (not sync conflicts but just actively syncing to make sure all files are current in real time) just increases exponentially to the point I just say "Well I guess the file is broken" Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I am able to draw up a full financial report that is in accordance to the IRS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It is not user-friendly yet. There is a lot of effort needed to draw up statements. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Working Papers provides you with everything you need out of an assurance and reporting tool. Everything is planned, performed and reviewed on screen. They are doing plenty to keep your tasks running efficiently but they could do a little better. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I am not a fan of some of their templates they seem a bit outdated, they could do more to bring them more up to date. Not the easiest software to learn, it will take some time to pick up, so it is not user friendly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The thing I like best about caseware is the way that it lines up with other programs such as gosystems and CCH. It does a great job of integrating the process between workpapers and turning them into a usable tax return for your clients. You can export the information easily and you can turn the trial balances into PDFs which is great for moving it between different storage applications. Additionally, it's very flexible in that it's integrated with many other applications and allows for you to work with your business depending on your needs and the needs of your client. The only thing I can consider is that sometimes the locations of things can be a bit unclear but this is definitely something that becomes easier with time and experience. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I like the short cuts it allows you to use and the practicality of how everything is laid out. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I dislike some working papers such as the financial statement template. I think it's old school and i can see many ways to improve it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Ability to add notes for 3rd party to review i.e. 'figure agrees to client's bank statement' Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There is no master template. All the CaseView documents are like a parts-bin that you have to rummage through to find what you are looking for. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Caseware allows employees to access the same file at the same time and allows changes made to be synchronized so all users can see the changes. In addition, the caseware allows individuals to “sign off” on their work papers to show who it was completed or reviewed by. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What I dislike about caseware is that the software is quite complicated and can take some time getting used to Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
You can quickly handle sync conflicts and manage versions of various documents. Layouts are customizeable. Once you understand the software itself things become more intuitive. CaseWare connecting is great to automate things inside of excel. Very nice visual representation of all documents, issues, and sign-offs. Other file manager systems I've seen are essentially just plain text lists. This makes navigating very easy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There is a steep learning curve. Some items are not super intuitive at first. CaseView lacks some features of other word processors. There are often 5 different ways to do different things, which means repeating something or figuring out how to do something can take a lot of trial and error. At times features, are very slow to respond. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
