What do you like best about VMware NSX?

Definitely the features it offers around security - distributed firewall, IPS/IDS in a distributed form are making the job with virtualized environments. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

The Load Balancer functionality and the changes around native and LB are quite distrucive as the vision is chaning every few weeks. That makes it a real pain from planning perspective, especially if your environmen heavility depends on this feature or it's a main reason why you buy NSX.

Additionally the DFW as an addon after broadcom acqusition is a joke! It should be part of the core license! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

Security with microsegmentation without the need to physically isolate different kind of workloads was a breakthrough for our environment. This allowed to save significant amount of money on IT infrastructure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about VMware NSX?

The micro-segmentation capabilities are particularly impressive, allowing for detailed control over security policies down to the individual VM level. This has significantly enhanced our security posture.

NSX scales well with our growing infrastructure needs. Whether adding new hosts or deploying complex networking topologies, NSX handles the load with minimal issues.

Seamless integration with other VMware products like vSphere and vCenter is a big plus. It makes managing our virtual environment more unified and streamlined. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

The initial setup and configuration can be quite complex, requiring a steep learning curve. Even with a strong background in networking, it took our team some time to get fully comfortable with all the features.

NSX is on the pricier side, and while it delivers value, smaller organizations might find it hard to justify the investment.

VMware’s support is generally good, but there have been instances where resolution times were slower than expected, especially for more complex issues.

VMware's customer support is generally responsive and knowledgeable, but the resolution times for complex issues can sometimes be slower than expected, frustrating during critical situations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

VMware NSX has created a flexible and secure network environment for running our CAD tools used in chip design and testing. One of the key challenges we faced was ensuring that our network could handle the high-performance requirements of these tools while maintaining strong security protocols. NSX’s micro-segmentation and virtual networking capabilities allowed us to isolate different stages of the design process, ensuring that each part of the workflow was secure and optimized for performance.

The primary benefit has been the ability to scale our network resources on demand to meet the intensive computational needs of chip design. This flexibility has significantly reduced downtime and improved our ability to test and iterate on designs quickly. Additionally, NSX’s security features have given us peace of mind, knowing that our sensitive design data is well-protected throughout the process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

- Our customers are often companies in the manufacturing industry. Users work on complex and sensitive projects. The data must be highly protected against theft. Microsegmentation and other NSX security features are critical for these platforms.

- Working with external partners: Our customers often involve third-party vendors who are responsible for small parts of large projects. Microsegmentation allows virtual desktops to be hosted on the same network.

- Work with critical public sector customers, such as fire departments or city police dispatch systems, that require maximum security for Internet-facing deployments.

- Protect legacy applications with weaker security architecture by deploying Identity-based firewall on top of micro-segmentation and distributed firewall. This allows to reduce the risk for these applications by allowing only certain users/virtual desktops to access these application servers.

- Performance + Security by using the same Layer 2 network. Our customers run some network latency sensitive applications. For example, putting an SQL server on a separate network from the virtual desktops reduces performance by a two digit percentage. By leveraging microsegmentation, we can use one large Layer 2 NSX overlay network for virtual desktops and application servers and provide security with microsegmentation.

- Performance benefits of DPUs (Data processing units): DPUs can offload the Distributed Firewall from the ESXi host and improve application performance of virtual desktops.

- Easier multi-tenancy options: The same ESXi hosts can be used for different Horizon pods using NSX overlay networking and multi-tenancy.

- Cost-effective solution to avoid hardware firewall for small robo/edge sites by using NSX

- Easy flexible setup of a VDI by day compute by night solution by using NSX

- Great loadbalancing functionality for application servers using AVI / NSX Advanced loadbalancer Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about VMware NSX?

Upsides:

The main reason we use the NSX product on our environments is to make life easier with virtual networking in a SDDC. The ease of use helps our thousands of customers to create their own SDDC with all of their enterprise applications. Virtual networking creates an unprecedented number of use-cases that can be used. Firewalling, VPN's, micro-segmentation, NIC-firewalling, gateway firewalling, BGP and lots more.

There is a rich third party integration possibility within the NSX product like Fortigate-VM! Last but not least, the implementation for NSX is relatively easy. You only need to install 3 appliances and you are good to go.

This is the reason it is used all the time in all our production environments. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

Downsides:

How easily NSX provides functionality to end-customers and/or cloud providers is something different from the configuration that needs to be done to use the product after installation. Next to this, I think the legion of different products such as AVI loadbalancing, IDS/IPS etc. could have a better integration into the main product. Most of these require additional appliances and or software to be used.

Furthermore, the API is vast and complete. However, the GUI seems to be behind in that part since not all API equivalent calls can be done with the GUI, which means that users that do not fully understand API calls the learning curve might be a bit harder in comparison with others that do understand these. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

NSX is a must use product for us. We need to use it in our environment in conjunction with VMware Cloud Director (VCD). However, the product also solves a lot of our needs that our customers have to build an maintain their own SDDC environment. Because NSX is a high-performing, high-scaling solution it integrates very well with the underlying hypervisor (ESXi) platform. Each hypervisor host is a node in the fabric, traffic passes efficiently through these nodes to create a high performing scalable fabric like no others we have.

We, and in return our customers, can now use micro-segmentation (firewalling on a per-NIC basis), VPN's, (Gateway) Firewalling , BGP and since lately even DPU based acceleration and much more all from within one single interface. Our customers enjoy the operational efficiency that the product gives them. Instead of waiting for weeks for a network department to create VLAN's, they can just do it themselfes within seconds!

This is all coming from the same interface that is used by thousands of VMware Cloud Providers around the globe. This is something so significant, we would not have been at the point we are now without the product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about VMware NSX?

NSX is very powerfull in microsegmentation or firewalling between VMs. There is no other product available that is able to perform the same level of firewalling within the vSphere environment or SDDC. Once setup the NSX network virtualization alows easy, fully automated deployment of new virtual networks within the environment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

NSX lacks internal monitoring tooling in comparison to a classical firewall. NSX relies on external tooling for this.

Currently it is not possible to purchase the NSX firewall (vDefend) as an option to VMware Foundation, it's only available as option to VCF Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

NSX is mostly used for the Distributed firewall (vDefend). It allows for segementing virtual machines. Without completly changing the network or the need to re-ip all virtual machines, NSX is able the segment within or across the network segments. For developers the network virtualization function provides an automated way to deploy new network segments in the SDDC. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about VMware NSX?

VMware NSX is pretty awesome because it makes managing networks super easy. The integration with other VMware tools is seamless, so you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues. I also love how it beefs up security with features like micro-segmentation—it’s like having a super secure firewall for your network. Plus, the interface is really user-friendly, which makes it easy to navigate even if you're not a networking expert. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

Honestly, VMware NSX is cool, but there are a few things that bug me. First off, it’s super expensive. If you’re on a budget or working for a smaller company, the costs can really add up, which kinda sucks.

There’s also just so much stuff in it. Like, having a lot of features is great, but it can get overwhelming really fast. Sometimes it feels like there are too many options, and it makes it harder to figure out what you actually need to use. I wish the interface was simpler or that you could just hide the features you don’t need.

Another thing is that while it usually integrates well with VMware products, it can be a pain when you’re trying to get it to play nice with non-VMware stuff. And when you hit those snags, getting help from support can take forever. It’s frustrating when you’re stuck and just want to get things working again.

So yeah, VMware NSX is powerful, but it’s not without its headaches. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

VMware NSX makes network management way less of a hassle. Instead of dealing with all the physical stuff, everything’s virtual, which saves us a lot of time and helps avoid mistakes. The micro-segmentation is pretty awesome too because it lets us lock down security with super-specific rules. Overall, it’s just making everything run smoother and keeping our network safe, which is a huge plus for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about VMware NSX?

Cloud is not a physical place; It is an operational model. And behind the Cloud operation model, there is automation.

Talking about Cloud without considering network automation (and even security) leaves our "three-legged chair" (computing, storage, and network) without achieving its objective.

And that integrated a stack like VMware Cloud Foundation, which even allows the model to be replicated in Hyperscalers (VMC-A, AVS, GCVE, OCVS), not only simplifies the Day 0 operation, but also Day 2. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about VMware NSX?

Having a console that allows you to coordinately manage the different VMware Cloud environments (VCF, VMC-A, AVS, GCVE, OCVS) would be desirable (as was the NSX+ approach). Firstly for Networking elements, in a second stage extended to Security (vDefend and vDefend with ATP). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is VMware NSX solving and how is that benefiting you?

Create a true VMware Cloud, including Networking and Security elements. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
