What is UDEC?

The Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is a two-dimensional numerical program that simulates the quasi-static or dynamic response to loading of media containing multiple intersecting joint structures. The discontinuous medium is represented as an assemblage of discrete blocks while the discontinuities are treated as boundary conditions between blocks. Large displacements along discontinuities and rotations of blocks can occur. UDEC utilizes an explicit solution scheme that can model complex, nonlinear behaviors.

What do you like best about UDEC?

Using UDEC, I am able to solve many enginnering problems that include large displacement and rotation which are vital in my evaluation of rockfalls and seismic activities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about UDEC?

The only disadvantage that I can point out from UDEC is the absence of 3D. I have worked with geometries with many different surfaces, and often it is necessary to calculate the characteristics in three dimensions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is UDEC solving and how is that benefiting you?

UDEC has been a valuable tool for completing my geotechnical engineering projects. By reproducing the behavior of the broken rock mass under different loads, I can determine the stability of slopes and analyze the effects of earthquakes on structures. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
