For our firm Sketch Up Pro is our favourite tool, we can do most of the design process with it, we generate swift ideas and options, either on the New IPad APP or on the computer. We love the connectivity and collaboration tools from Trimble Connect and hope more people adopt it.
Without a doubt is is our favorite tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The only downturn to Sketch Up is working with external consultants, engenieers like CAD.
Most of the work we do is conceptual and after that we delegate construction documents to an other firm that coordinates with the rest of the consultants that do not use Sketch Up Pro. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Sketchup is a fast way to show different ways something can be built on a conceptual basis.
It's fantastic on projects where new pieces must be fitted between what's already there, and you want to try several alternative solutions.
It makes it very easy to see interferences between all components from any angle to ensure a design that's both easy to install and maintain.
The resulting 3D visualization (with animation) is excellent for showing design ideas and getting people involved. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There is a definite learning curve, and planfulness and discipline are required to make your model efficient (creating named groups, components and tags), but that's not unlike other 3D drawing tools.
The 3D word is built with edges, faces and polygons, so a cylinder doesn't "know" it's a cylinder, and an extruded profile doesn't know which axis it was extruded in. None of these will have a centerline so positioning them based on center distances is challenging. And a hole also has no centerline making it hard to dimension it's location correctly.
Once the build solution has been decided, you'll want to transition to regular 2D or 3D CAD to make the detailed drawings for fabrication. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
SketchUp is for anyone -- simple enough to be used by the average Joe DIY homeowner to the high-end wood craftsmen or just about anything else! A few YouTube videos and you're off and running Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I first started using SketchUp years ago for fun and now use it professionally. I've learned things in the professional setting that I wish I learned way-back-when on my own. It would be nice if there were a couple of tutorials for some of the basic tools like grouping an object vs making a component. That's not as intuitive as say, drawing a line or rotating an object. This could be as simple as a couple of pop-up notes that point to a tool and say what it does... and of course, there would have to be a "don't show this anymore" button. Kind of like the Paper-Clip Man for MS Word about 20 years ago, but not as annoying. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Sketchup's ease of use is unrivaled in my experience with various 3d modeling software. The push/pull nature of the modeling is easy to teach to people and can lead to quick modeling in experienced hands. SketchUp model library is handy in finding premade assets to help flesh out models in architectural or set design projects. Setting up scenes for review and rendering in another software is a breeze, without the need to fiddle around with complicated controls. The program's support for extensions is an excellent feature for more advanced users, who can install various scripts and extra tools tailored to their field, such as tools to create topo maps or layout wall and roof framing for architectural design. Sketchup's commitment to providing a free version for hobbyist and student users is a welcome sight in today's rampant subscription paywalls. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Native support for import/export to architectural programs such as Revit and Autocad would be appreciated to avoid using extensions. Sketchup's base material library is sorely lacking and hasn't been updated in decades at this point; a wider variety of high-quality materials would help in designing before exporting to 3d modeling programs. I have been using Sketch-Up for over 12 years. I find it very easy to use, and more powerful and sometimes even easier with added plug-ins. Customization is excellent to create a working environment that suits my needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There are some things I wish were easier to do, however most things can be done with a plug-in, although many times they come at an extra cost. There are some things I wish I could do to fit my workflow, that I haven’t found a plug-in to do, like drawing a pathway for instance with centerline and a line on either side at a set distance. Or even a double offset, I import a centerline and can click it and have lines drawn at an offset distance from the center line. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Sketchup is the one tool that most fully recreates the experience of working with cardboard massing models, but in a much more efficient and fluid way. Our office has been using Sketchup for 12+ years now, and our design process uses the Sketchup to explore dozens of initial massing iterations and then develops a final model with BIM like characteristics for construction documentation.
The ease of use allows us to share our models with builders, which greatly eases the burden of explaining things in written RFI's and 2D details during construction. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Sketchup can be used as BIM lite but not without a lot of manual effort. Would be great if there were advanced architectural plugins that can ride atop the basic OS that make SU more like BIM, allowing for a study model to develop into a BIM model without having to import the 3D geometry into Revit. I've been using Sketchup for over ten years. The simplicity with which I can open up the program and immediately start modeling is fantastic. I can also easily import my designs into external programs like Twinmotion or VRay to get photorealistic renders. While Sketchup doesn't come out of the box with an advanced assortment of features, the Extension Warehouse allows you to delve into a vast ecosystem of possibilities. All that, combined with the 3D warehouse, offers an incredible resource for finding existing models of products, furniture, and locations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The few downsides are Sketchup's propensity to lag with super complicated models (even on a RAM-friendly style). And while the extension warehouse does offer some amazing features, there are a few features that Sketchup is missing that would be incredibly useful additions. A better texture editor, rounded corners, better camera control features, multiple view panes within one window, object symmetry, randomized positioning or aligned / distributed positioning, 3D Text edit, loft tools, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It is a very user-friendly product. It's great for sending scaled drawings for my clients and layouts for basement remodels. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I can't really think of anything bad to say. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The learning curve is very brief; you can be drawing effectively and accurately with only a few minutes investment, as opposed to most 3D programs that require much more of a mindset shift. It is also very powerful, and is capable of creating very complex images and complete scenes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It is a little costly, and does require an annual renewal in order to continue along the upgrade path. The annual updates appear to focus mostly on improvements to the "Layout" application, as opposed to the actual drawing tools themselves. It would be nice to see more adoption of some of the more popular plug-ins on the market into the core drawing tools. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
One of my favorite features of SketchUp is its primary and easy-to-use user interface. Even for beginners, it is simple to understand, manage and use. All the tools and functions required for modeling, editing and manipulating 3D objects are included in the well-organized toolbar. I can make patterns and structures fast and effectively because of the software's straightforward nature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What I dislike about SketchUp is that it sometimes crashes when extreme import or too much memory is needed to produce the model. Sometimes the software lags due to this issues but apparently, it recovers immediately. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
