Plastic SCM Overview

What is Plastic SCM?

Version control is the operating system of software development. It can solve problems efficiently and silently, or it can create more. Plastic SCM is a distributed version control, but can work centralized too. It is excellent with branching and merging, can deal with huge projects and big binary assets natively, and it comes with GUIs and tools to make everything simpler. Plastic solves problems.

Product Description

Plastic SCM is a version control system that will help you develop new features in parallel, go distributed, merge in time, and never break a build again

How do you position yourself against your competitors?

– Versatility: Plastic SCM can work in a centralized and/or distributed way. Such flexibility is unmatched by any other VCS.

– Visual: Plastic SCM provides a Branch explorer to control your projects in a simple, easy-to-understand visual interface.

– Game Devs and Artists: it handles neatly big binaries. We also provide a separate GUI for artists and designers to abstract them from the complexity of version control, we call it Gluon.

– DevOps: We have done so with Merge Bots: automated merge funtionality that allows our clients to build a modern day DevOps pipeline.

– Semantic diff and merge: Diffs and merges can promptly be assesed in a visual way with our diff and merge functionality.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

Plastic is very fast (but not in UE4) supports file locking, handles very large binary projects and is relatively inexpensive. We bought Plastic to enable source control for working with Unreal Engine. For that task, Plastic has been a big disappointment (see below). But for managing 3D graphics projects after our team went remote during Covid, Plastic has been fantastic. Plastic is unbelievably fast at scanning and syncing huge binary projects. The Glueon interface lets artists selectively sync only the parts of the project that they need to work with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

The UE4 plugin is unbelievably slow and unreliable. As I write this review, I have been waiting for over 30 minutes to rename 139 files using the UE4 plugin, most of that time the status is "Updating source control status..." Syncing projects from the plugin while in UE are very slow and usually crashes the editor. (In Perforce, syncs from the UE editor were fast.) We almost always use Glueon to push or pull changes from the repository. It's very fast, but we usually need to re-open the UE project every time. Basic file operations, like the rename I'm waiting for, are obscenely slow.

Our Plastic workspaces routinely disappear and need to be remade. This is usually quick, Plastic just scans the workspace folder, but causes potential issues with phantom file locks.

The GUIs are great, but weirdly there is no GUI for the admin tools. Need to manually unlock 12 files? You will have to list all locked file (100's...) find the GUID for each file and paste it into an unlock command-line one at a time...

Plastic frequently gets confused about files that have been moved and/or renamed. Sometimes Plastic interprets moves as moves, sometimes it interprets them as deletes and adds, and often it only gets part of it right and gives up.

Plastic's error messages are often obtuse and offer no real help for typical users.

I would recommend Plastic because it's affordable and usually reliable but it does not live up to it's promise, especially with UE4. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

It has a robust version control system that is by far the best in the industry, especially for game development projects, as they have really large files which Git fails to optimize. It's branch resolution feature is also one of the best. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

It's pretty complex for first use, and I will not recommend it for small projects and teams, there are not enough tutorials available and documentation can be quite confusing for advanced topics. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Plastic SCM solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using plastic for over a year now for managing our game development projects, we use it alongside Unity & Unreal engine, and it serves its purpose well. It is quite affordable considering GitLFS and is more robust, and its branching system is the best. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

I wonder how great Plastic SCM work with Unity Game Engine. The commits get updated within a fraction of seconds, the multiple branching feature, shelving my pending work, and switching to another branch swiftly! It's really industry standards. I would really recommend people seeking for an advice which VS to use, try this!!! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

For newbies, it is a bit complicated to start with since it has multiple features. But trust me, for professionals, it's the best and top preferred. I'm stating that with my own experience. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Plastic SCM solving and how is that benefiting you?

Version Control - To collab my project (SaaS) with my other team members working on the same software.

Storing my Unity projects on Cloud.

I like the multiple branching and shelving (pending works) feature as these were not present in Unity's native version control service - Unity Collab. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Nothing I can think of, maybe a bit more easy integration and tutorials to help beginners. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

We are using Plastic SCM at our organization Brahmos Interactive for managing all of our projects with version control, all client project and everything inhouse project, they are games basically so they have large file sizes and plastic does a great job. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Nothing as such. Plastic really works wonders for version control! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

Quick branch switch, shelving the pending changes, works wonders with Unity and makes the committing process 10x faster (compared to Unity Collab)!!!! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

The initial setup process is a bit tedious and fussy. It might feel a little complicated if you switch from Unity Collab (which doesn't provide various options like Plastic SCM and is hence very simple to use). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

The automatic merge is fantastic, it resolves most of the conflict without any interaction. Also, I love the shelve feature, it saves my life a lot of time because sometimes, I don't want to upload my changes cause by I'm in a wrong branch, so I store the changes in the shelve, go to the correct branch and then, I can apply those changes in the correct branch.

The sync between two Plastic servers works well but sometimes it fails (like I say below). We use two servers because We have two software factory, it helps in order to have a copy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

Well... sometimes the automatic merge does wrong merges. Also, you can not stop a merge operation and you have to continue until you finish all the merges. It would be great If I can cancel a merge and not modify my local files.

Also, we have problems with the sync between two plastic servers because sometimes there is a "double head" and we can not sync until we resolve the "double head" Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Plastic SCM:

Great support and the GUI is great to control your software version. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Plastic SCM solving and how is that benefiting you?

I'm the backend lead, we have to control the version of each person in the team. So Plastic helps to control every branch. Also, It has a nice and friendly GUI. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Plastic SCM?

The user interface can look pretty if you spend a long time housekeeping it. Their logo is also nice. Honestly, not many good things compared to alternatives.

The Explain Merge tool is a nice visual aid. It can handle big files fine with a tradeoff in project search performance. (just like many other version control systems out there, which makes me wonder why do they make this a selling point?) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Plastic SCM?

The most common actions and features that you'd expect to use all the time are buried within menus and submenus. Working with teams, merging branches and doing code reviews.

Forget about pruning branches, they encourage keeping every single branch and commit within your project which becomes a convoluted spaghetti mess when trying to visualize and manage a serious project with more than one person. This causes the searches to take extremely long times and I've been forced to quit the software multiple times due to "lightning fast" search times that freeze it.

When trying to be picky when merging, plastic will force you to undo everything and start over again. Don't expect this software to help or make things easy for you. Make sure you have high levels of patience and tolerance for plastic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Plastic SCM:

Choose a more robust version control system. Perforce is an excellent alternative and git if your project is not using Unreal / Unity. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Plastic SCM solving and how is that benefiting you?

They claim that the product is able to handle thousands of heavy files and that searches are "lightning fast". I've realized that this is not true since day one. Search times are a pain, I can't count the many times that this software has crashed while commiting or doing a simple search.

Their nomenclature regarding invisible / deleted / private / ignored and hidden files is laughable. The terms they use are confusing and navigating the interface is like travelling through a maze blindfolded, there's no clear indication whatsoever of what you're doing. Instead of following standards (a la Perforce / Git) they decided to be unique which is their greatest downfall.

Any basic action such as shelving or merging will be met with at least two little tutorial owls that block your screen and multiple error messages about selectors not being able to locate revisions. Expect to repeat the same steps over and over again to complete these simple tasks. This is unacceptable, it has costed me multiple hours at least each day. At this point, using plastic is completely undesirable and we'll soon be changing to a more competent VCS. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
