**What do you like best about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

I like the robust reporting and all the functionality that NextGen Healthcare EHR offers. The reporting functionality is very robust when we go into the report center for all of our practices. Another part I find valuable is the ability to submit claims, track claims, and auto-post payments. We us the patient ledger and payment history a lot to track balances in NextGen. I also appreciate how they did a great job walking us through the steps, making the initial setup pretty easy.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

Some of the settings and provider setup/ practice setup are a little bit cumbersome and difficult to understand on the back end. The Admin tab can be a little overwhelming. You need a little more training to know where to start. ERA enrollments have changed over the years, so sometimes those can get a little more confusing. They use Waystar and once you get the training then it goes well.

**What problems is NextGen Healthcare EHR solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use NextGen Healthcare EHR for billing services. It provides robust reporting and functionality to submit, track claims, and auto post payments, keep patient balances, and more for revenue cycle management It allows our practices to collect balances and track claims that are denied or unpaid to then take the appropriate steps with insurances and patients to get payment.

One of the most compelling aspects of NextGen is its commitment to innovation, particularly its AI capabilities. The Ambient Assist technology is truly a game changer, significantly enhancing efficiency and user experience. Additionally, the annual User Group Meeting offers valuable insights and meaningful opportunities to learn about upcoming developments and future direction. Another standout benefit is how seamlessly new functionalities can be integrated into our practice, including interface connections and reporting capabilities.

A potential downside is the cost, as it can be quite expensive. Additionally, some providers within our practice have noted that it is less user-friendly compared to other EHR systems they have used in their private practices.

NextGen helps MMM Multiclínica by centralizing patient data across our 14 locations, improving interoperability through interfaces, and providing strong reporting tools. This allows us to better coordinate care, meet regulatory requirements, and make data-driven decisions, ultimately improving efficiency and patient outcomes.

**What do you like best about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

I really appreciate how NextGen Healthcare EHR has evolved to better support FQHCs like ours, especially in the last few years. The NG8 upgrade was much more seamless and user-friendly, making workflows faster for both providers and front office staff. The integrated system has helped us reduce accounts receivable, streamline payment processing, and improve reporting accuracy, which is critical for our compliance and quality management. The dedicated support team during upgrades and the ability to customize reporting for our risk management and quality programs have been invaluable.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

There was a period about five years ago when support and system cohesion were frustrating, and we seriously considered other options. Some past upgrades (like NG6) were difficult and stressful. It’s never totally seamless, and upgrades always come with some stress, but things have improved. There are also ongoing challenges with getting our patient population to adopt digital features beyond paper statements, and sometimes implementing new tools takes longer than hoped.

**What problems is NextGen Healthcare EHR solving and how is that benefiting you?**

NextGen Healthcare EHR helps us solve documentation inefficiencies, workflow fragmentation, and reporting challenges. By streamlining charting, integrating clinical and billing workflows, and improving data accessibility, it allows our team to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time focused on patient care.

**What do you like best about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

It is relatively easy to use. It does a good job at helping both offices operate on the same system, which in turn allows us to be a fully integrated care model.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

The updates & system crashes without a timely resolution. For the price point we feel as though it should run a bit more smoothly. Support has been helpful, although when the system goes down no one in support seems to have answers or a fix it solution. We tried the AI features, but my providers decided that it was not for them, and we discontinued those services.

None really. If we weren't using NextGen Office we would simply be using a different EMR.

**What do you like best about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

I like using the mobile app for NextGen Healthcare EHR as it allows me to look things up quickly when I'm not at the office or at home by a computer. It really saves a lot of time. I also appreciate their AI program, Ambient, which helps with charting by saving time and producing a detailed SOAP note.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

It's a bit of a clunky system. A lot of having to close one document to open another document, it could be more time efficient. Hated the initial setup. It was terrible. Every upgrade has had a host of problems and takes days to weeks before we are running efficiently again. The system goes down on a regular basis causing me to have to log in all over again which takes up to 5 minutes every time.

NextGen Healthcare EHR organizes our patient-centered medical records and, with the Ambient AI program, saves time in charting.

The most helpful aspect of NGO is the integration between the EMR and Practice Management systems. It’s also easy to use and doesn’t require a high level of training to get started.

Some things can be confusing because there is more that one way to perform a single task.  Would also like more flexibility to customize some forms.

Extremely time consuming, cumbersome, and inefficient. The number of radio buttons to be completed for each section is excessive and wastes a lot of time.

NexGen support has improved, and you receive fast and helpful support. EHR is easy to train new users. We currently do not use the PM side but are in the testing stage to starting using at MSA

The patient portal is hard for the patients to use, hard to get all our patients enrolled to cut down on the phone usage

NextGen allows for multiple customizations. We have customized templates which help our providers streamline their workflow. Our users state it is very simple to navigate. Definitely user friendly.

We don't like the number of clicks it takes on various screens (i.e. medications). The nurses don't like that you can only be in one patient chart at a time.

The user inbox is one of the best assets for the end-user. Combining tasks, appointments, PAQ, and the portal all in one. In comparison to the other EMR that I have experience with (Avatar) NextGen is much more user friendly.

The EHR chart can be somewhat overwhelming for the end user.  My organization has a high volume of providers and daily encounters. Therefore the charts can have a significant amount of data. Additionally, slowness is an issue in our high-volume charts.

As a developer, the flexibility and on-premise installation affords us the ability to customize the software to our exact specifications.  This is one of the few EMR systems that do allow this

One of the downsides to the product is the step learning curve.  Over the years there have been many different versions, and the changes are significant between them.  Finding the correct documentation for the exact version can be tedious and time consuming.

**Recommendations to others considering NextGen Healthcare EHR:**

One of hte keys to success is to ensure you maintain a positive relationship with an account manager.  Trying to funnel all general requests for sales and training through the customer support channel was a nightmare.  Once account managers became an option, we landed an absolute gem, and our relationship with NextGen blossomed, and we advanced to being highly vocal supporters of the software.

There are very few EMRs that offer a suite customzied to the urgent care specialty.  NextGen's platform offered us the ability to take our industry knowledge and leverage the software's customizability to fit the urgent care patient flow.

Like most EMR/Practice Management solutions, NextGen is always searching for ways to make money. One of the ways they do this is through charging for interfaces with other solutions.

Anyone looking or shopping for an EMR solution must look at the ability to customize the product to fit their needs.  The ability to customize the content provides an essential edge to their practice. Customizing the product to suit their workflow and nuances can save them time. This time saved will eventually equate to improved patient flow and ultimately satisfaction.

We have almost eliminated paper charting in our office by implementing NextGen EHR.   We are slowly gaining office space back by having fewer paper charts in the office. Our providers have gained efficiencies in areas that allow them to spend a little extra time with their patients.

I'll be honest; I left the practice in large part because of how horrible NextGen is.  So the only pro I can say about NextGen was that I was overjoyed to not have to use it anymore.
All of the clinicians at my clinic hated NextGen.  The only people who seemed to think it was a good program were those in the billing department.  So that gives you a good idea of what it was designed for.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

Too many clicks.
Organized in nested, size-locked windows and you can't toggle back and forth between, e.g. ordering window, ICD-10 window, and note (let alone prior notes).  Every time you switch tabs, NextGen asks if you want to save changes even if none were made!
Bloated notes (5 pages for a UTI/URI!)
Encounters lock at 7 days, so if you're working on older charts or messages/labs, you have to close everything you're working on, re-enter your login/password, and then unlock the Encounter.
No intuitive way to do the most basic messages about your patient. No message center.  Instead, you create an Encounter and enter a "Telephone Message".  Responding to a Telephone Message is nothing like e-mail.  Messages are not organized in threads, but rather,  in Encounters that remember, lock after 7 days.  Trying to find an old message is impossible- you literally open up a page that lists every single Telephone Message ever generated on your patient!
Anticoagulation flowsheet.  You end up with pages and pages of INRs and doses that are not even in chronological order!
NextGen routinely froze and/or crashed multiple times per week without any warning or explanation.  This was obviously detrimental to the clinical workflow in our practice.
Customer support was non-existent.  As an FQHC, NextGen would not even help us directly.  Instead, they made us go through a third-party organization called OSIS, which had no power to change anything about the software.  The response I got to all of my requests for customization/improvement was "working as designed".
Since NextGen was completely unable to accommodate things like keeping track of basic health maintenance for primary doctors, our clinic had to add on plug-ins that further slowed down the program and led to further crashes.
So inefficient that our workplace hired scribes for every clinician.  Everyone still took home 1-2 hours of work at night even after we had scribes.

**Recommendations to others considering NextGen Healthcare EHR:**

If you are considering using this EHR, I would STRONGLY urge you to talk to actual clinicians that use it.  NextGen was universally loathed at our workplace and I am happy to hear that the administration is planning to  switch to another EHR.  In addition, if you are clinician looking for a job, I would recommend that you NOT work at any institution that uses NextGen as their EHR if you care about patient care and your own well-being.

I suppose the problem is the government mandate to use an EHR.
As a physician, I saw no benefits to using this EHR.  I would have been far more efficient using another EHR, or even pen and paper.  When it takes 20+ clicks to order an in-house test like a fingerstick glucose, you get an idea of how poorly designed this EHR was.

I like the practice management/EHR sides to this program. They are noticeably different and can function together easily. As a front desk office worker in a clinic it is essential for me to make notes in patient charts while also checking new patients in and ensuring the workflow stays steady.

Some of the most important functions feel like they are several clicks away vs one button for fast access. When time is of the essence at every moment, hiding things behind clicks can waste extra time. The interface has not changed in years and could be improved. Functionality on mobile is not optimal.

It gives the user the ability to move from one program to another, making it easier for the providers to edit their work.  I like that NextGen has invested in Televideo and Telehealth way before COVID and OTTO was great application.  The new patient portal is also great.

Instead of moving to a better GUI NextGen is not revamping its interface.  It has been the same for a long time.  It should move like a web-based interface with tabs and make it easy to manage.  Improved cross-functionality with other modules will be great.

Easy to update and transfer information from previous visit. Compatible with dictation software. Incorporated billing system with ability to review submitted claims. Ability to check revenue collected quickly and easily.

I do not use the clicking of each organ system as this takes much longer than just having a premade template. So I have created premade templates for each section of the SOAP note, which works just fine in the "type free hand" section.

The incorporation of submitting prescription narcotics through the EHR is terrific. I was doing this freehand before, and it was taxing and often required correction.

When I call support, I am speaking with someone in the US who has a good knowledge of how the system works and can answer my question and/or solve my problem quickly.

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

The payment posting system needs some help, there are very little work arounds.  I have 20 years experience in billing with various systems and this one took me well over a year to master.

The integration between the PM and EHR side needs to be cleaner.  Tasking needs to be added to the claims page.  The scheduler should show when someone is checked in on the PM side without having to click on the name, quick glance and should be easier to print.

**Recommendations to others considering NextGen Healthcare EHR:**

Review and demo at least 4 EHRs before making a switch.  Factor in options, improvements that have been made and are planned.  Ask questions, and a lot of them.  If the sales/support team does not patiently answer these questions, move on.  I found NextGen to be low pressure and quite patient in the numerous questions I asked while considering the product.

Our accounts receivables and claim denials have greatly reduced.  This has increased revenue and productivity.  The outstanding claims were our primary issue with the previous EHR.

Overall functionality and the ability to customize to fit the needs of pretty much any organization and their many unique workflows. They continue to listen to their clients and add in default functionality to continue to improve their base platform.

Customization is and always be a double edged sword. At much as it can improve it can also make it that more complicated to maintain and upgrade.  But as they continue to take into account the ideas and feedback of their clients their base and functionality will continue to expand.  Hopefully they can make more system practice settings that can fit custom workflows without having to create custome templates.

**What do you like best about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

Ability to see at short glance the previous visit date and type of visit

**What do you dislike about NextGen Healthcare EHR?**

Ease of use. It is not very user friendly. It requires a patients chief complaint to equal the diagnosis determined at the end of the visit by the physician. As a user we have to return to the behinning of patients visit & create a chief complaint per each diagnosis.

**Recommendations to others considering NextGen Healthcare EHR:**

Ability to create a patients reason for visit without having to equal the number of diagnosis the doctor treats. 

**What problems is NextGen Healthcare EHR solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its appears to be quicker and easier for the billing and payment side, that part of the system appears user friendly and efficient
