I like the layout of the tool and the fact that I am able to import some of my own glossaries. The progress meter is also very helpful when working on larger projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The least helpful thing that I can think of is that you aren't able to work offline. There should be some way that you can work on a project while offline and then simply upload the updated project once you are online again. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The layout is clean, minimal and easy to spot. Great quality of post edit machine translation to choose from, also available for different industry and out put to use. Different role has its own page, translator gets to utilize the resources and store private translation memory when needed. Very well predefined action flow that helps with smooth work procedure. Memory consumption can be sometimes irritating, encountered application crash a few times, purge disabled, page reload failed... the compatibility with Safari on macOS is questionable. Working with Chrome seems less incidents but same issue of memory consumption appears the same scenario with no other workaround but only to restart the machine. This CAT tool is free, which gives freelance translators the advantage of being able to use a CAT tool without paying for expensive software. It accepts a variety of file formats, and even produces a weighted word count when source documents are uploaded. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I have concerns about the privacy of uploading my clients' documents to MateCat, so I do not use this tool when translating for clients. Instead, I use it for translation samples and to practice with a CAT tool. Storing clients' private documents on an external server is something I prefer not to do, so I would much rather translate in MS Word or another program installed on my computer. According to the FAQ you can use a private TM (Translation Memory), but this is not intuitive when creating a new project. This aspect could be greatly improved by changing the interface to include a privacy option checkbox directly below the TM & Glossary section, which would allow the user to mark the uploaded documents and the resulting TMs as private. One of the things that I like about Matecat is its user interface and the design of its website, both are very comfortable to look at and do not overload you with information. They have an organized system where you can easily find the information necessary to satisfy the doubts you have about them. Matecat offers you the free option to use its internal translation program which has a very broad database and it feds and it updates through the feedback of the users, which gives it an advantage over other software or websites of free translation. Although this only applies to those people with basic knowledge of the language to be translated.
The system of service plans offered is more directed towards companies or organizations than to the general public, and taking into account the cost of services is affordable compared to the care offered by them, especially for offering the services of professionals trained in the languages they have in their selection together with the option of reviewing the document. In the aspect of translation it still has some flaws in grammar, even when its database provides a better service in terms of translation, It does not have many differences compared to other free translation applications, such as the google translator.
To use the free translation software it is possible that in the first instance you will not be able to locate the option that allows it, you must have information on how the page works to access it, it is unintuitive in that aspect. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

First of all, to use Matecat you only need to upload a document to the website and choose the source and target languages; once this is done, Matecat provides you with two general choices, either you work with the automatic translation for free or submit your document for paid professional translation. I've only used the automatic translation, I haven't paid anything and I've been able to work on the website using an internet connection, downloading the final draft (corrected by me), or downloading a preview and working without an internet connection.
As for the automatic translation, even though it generally presents grammar mistakes or too literal translation, Matecat provides you with three options with different levels of accuracy to translate separate sentences, paragraphs and even phrases; but if you don't like either or can think of a better way to translate them, you can write your own translation.
You can translate specific chunks of the text (separated by Matecat based on punctuation marks) instead of seeing the whole text on the screen all the time, which, I believe is fantastic because it keeps you focused on that particular paragraph, sentence or phrase.
The website is user friendly, it's organized; if you work directly on it, it keeps the format of the original text untouched (fonts, margins, style...), shows spelling mistakes and provides you with help to be able to translate without problems. And, a bonus, if your internet connection goes down, your work will be saved (only for you to see it) on the website, so you can come back later and keep working. Since Matecat is a Computer Assisted Translation tool, in several cases, the translations provided are not quite accurate, based on the target language, or even have grammar mistakes. This means that, in order to have a good experience using this CAT tool, the person must have advanced knowledge of both the source and the target languages. Also, you must pay full attention to each phrase, sentence or paragraph you are translating so that you don't miss any mistake or a too-literal translation, which, even though it could be grammatically correct, it would not make much sense in the target language.
If, by any means, the source language has punctuation mistakes, the chunks of text Matecat separates can break the original ideas and thus, create problems in the final translation.
Finally, if you don't want to work on the website and you download the preview (without correcting it on Matecat first), it's highly probable that you'll end up with a less accurate translation (more work to do), with format problems, and in some cases, with untranslated sentences or paragraphs . Translated words and how many words are still need to be translated are shown below, and in case of issue with tag it advises you immediately Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
A sentence is split sometimes in 4 or 5 segments and is very difficult to have a full view of the sentence making difficult to make the translation to have sense. Most of the time after translating those 4-5 segments need to go back and check consistency Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
You can see how many words you have translated and how much time you will need to spend in order to conclude the translation. It is an easy to use tool Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
When you click on done in one segment it takes you to another part of the translation which does not relate to the previous segment making it difficult for the translation to have consistency unless you read the reference source file outside the tool Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Availability and compatibility: I can use Matecat with my favourite browsers, on a laptop or tablet; most file formats can be uploaded. I also like to be able to dictate the translation.
I also find the colour-coded corrections system very good to work with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
