First, it is free.
Second, while it is like ephemeral it will have a permanent ~5gb storage where the data will be intact after restarts.
Moreover, they offer the public beta that allows to customize use of the service.
The beta allows to start the shell from a custom docker image, and that feature appears to be quite awesome, but for the some corresponding issues that will be resolved soon. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The beta testing program is still too raw and has issues that will be resolved later.
Folks used to report issues with being charged for some glitch that has taken place while they have been testing the beta. However, the support team did quickly respond to the issue and it has been mitigated via the return of funds, as far I know. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Cloud Shell is a free terminal that you can use for whatever you want, and it runs 100% in a web browser. Seeing how most of my work requires the internet, I’m completely fine with being tied to a browser.
There is 5GB of persistent storage that is tied to your $HOME directory, and this is also completely free. There is 5GB of persistent storage that is tied to your $HOME directory, and this is also completely free. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Most people developing cloud apps usually run a web server of some sort. Usually, you would run it locally and just type in “localhost” into your web browser to access it.
This is not possible with Cloud Shell, so the team created a neat “web preview” function that creates a URL on the fly to point to your local server. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The interface of google cloud is very user friendly. It is easy to use and navigate. It has a fast and reliable shell and command line. The best feature is that its easily accessible because it is linked to the users google account so no further authorization is needed. There is also good documentation and its easy to share to other users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Sometimes starting the program can be slow and running certain commands can take some time. There have been instances where the program crashes and one has to refresh the browser. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Google Cloud Shell is directly integrated into the Google Cloud Platform experience. It is super fast, and almost comparable to a native shell/command-line experience that you would find locally. The best part (from my experience), is that no authentication has to take place for virtual machines hosted on the Google Cloud Platform, everything is done through the user's account. It also allows you to SSH directly into servers from any browser, which is especially helpful when you want to have secure access to a cloud computing infrastructure remotely. This service requires absolutely no setup, which is always awesome. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The feature-set of the Google-hosted shell is quite limited. Other than setting themes and some other basic settings you would find in any terminal, there isn't much else. The Google Shell experience could improve significantly if there was a possibility of syncing user settings and environments, similar to the way competitors like iTerm, hyper.js, and other native terminals. This software is very useful and practical because it allows easy and simple administration of all resources without having to install any additional tool in the system. I like Google Cloud Shell because when using it the gcloud command line tool of the Cloud SDK and its other utilities are always available to the user, updated and fully authenticated. Another of its great advantages is that it offers 5GB of continuous storage and a totally secure administration. In addition, it offers a large number of implementation and development tools for the most common programming languages. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
One of its disadvantages is that the code editor is sometimes quite slow and can present different flaws. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
super easy to use without having to install the google cloud sdk and other tools in my system. with this, i can use the gcloud command line tool Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
nothing really given it allows customizable environments and in line command editors as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The design of the product is very clean and sleek; it's easy to navigate and see what's where. There is admittedly a lot of information to keep track of; this would make it less friendly to an average end user, but speaking from the point of view as a developer, it's quite useful. Additionally, the use of the gcloud command line tool is very useful and I highly enjoy how easy it is to become authenticated. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The connection can be a bit slow at times; it takes up to 30 seconds occasionally for the console to load. It also initially did not support many languages, but is much improved in this aspect now. Support is usually quite quick to respond when reporting bugs with the software (even though there are many, especially in the early days). Finally, it's an ephemeral VM instance, which has its own downsides. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The ability to host a free website with no expenses on the free tier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I dislike that it is so complex. I feel like there should be two interfaces, one full featured and one less complex. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Easy to get start since the feature is built into the console and console is full featured. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
No windows support and limited connectivity option to other system not in GCP Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
