DataStax Overview

What is DataStax?

DataStax is the company that powers generative AI applications with real-time, scalable data and production-ready vector data tools that generative AI applications need, and seamless integration with developers’ stacks of choice. The Astra DB vector database provides developers with elegant APIs, powerful real-time data pipelines, and complete ecosystem integrations to quickly build and deploy production-level AI applications. We recently added Langflow which makes it 100x easier and faster for any developer—experienced or new—to build Generative AI applications using Python-based composable building blocks and pre-built components, which can be combined in numerous ways. With its easy-to-use, drag-and-drop visual environment and rapid iteration of data flows, Langflow makes it simpler for any developer to build LangChain-based RAG applications and deploy in one-click.

What do you like best about DataStax?

The scalability of Cassandra, along with the customizations done by Datastax, is terrific for enterprise use cases. AstraDB, their Database as a service, is easy to use and cost-effective. There are drivers/SDKs/APIs for most languages/tools/frameworks you want to integrate with. Stargate is a cherry on top of the cake. The Astra Streaming service is an excellent managed service of Apache Pulsar. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about DataStax?

A few general issues with Apache Cassandra are no transactional guarantee and joins. The eventual consistency will not work for all use cases. The Astra service lacks capabilities for extendable monitoring and observability. Datastax Astra also lacks the ability for refined RBAC and network security. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is DataStax solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use Datastax Astra DB and Streaming for our database and streaming needs. The billing is simple, and the integration is as well. The serverless database helped us reduce the overall costs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about DataStax?

It's distributed capability, availability and horizontal scaleability. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about DataStax?

One area I wanted to see in their next major version is ease fo backup tool. Maybe integrated within OpsCenter with more flexibility. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is DataStax solving and how is that benefiting you?

RDBMs typically very hard to scale horizontally and it gets performance degradation as your data increases, however if you design your queries and data model correctly and properly, the speed of operations are sub-millis, especially for large write operations. What do you like best about DataStax?

The quality of the product is really good, it really goes beyond the open source Apache Cassandra. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about DataStax?

The quality of the support, from time to time we had issues lasting for more than a year (sic), or every time we had to explain our setup to the support representative as they had no clue about our company and our background. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering DataStax:

They have a good product and a huge experience with multiple different customers from different business domains. They are also offering now a flavor based on the open source version that might help people or organizations with specific needs, or afraid of lock-in, which is great. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is DataStax solving and how is that benefiting you?

We manage to provide a platform as a service to multiple different development teams. DataStax came into the play because no one had the knowledge on distributed databases at scale so their participation was paramount to the kickoff of the project. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about DataStax?

Our data was decentralized. It has therefore become indispensable to implement a customer master data management solution to deploy a consolidated vision of our clients in one single point. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about DataStax?

Beneath the covers, the Cassandra data storage layer is basically a key-value storage system. This means that you must "model" your data around the queries you want to surface, rather than around the structure of the data itself. This can lead to storing the data multiple times in different ways to be able to satisfy the requirements of your application. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is DataStax solving and how is that benefiting you?

The write volume it can handle. It is able to handle such a large volume of writes by first writing to an in-memory data structure, then to an append-only log. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about DataStax?

Datastax is a bit expensive especially for smaller companies who are budget conscious. I also which the processes could be sped up a bit. There is also a learning curve to Datastax which I believe requires someone well versed to get through and teach to others. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

We are using DataStax to train new and existing employees. We also use DataStax to improve our management systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
