One disadvantage of ArcGIS Field Maps is that it requires a consistent and reliable internet connection for optimal functionality. If you are working in remote areas or locations with poor connectivity, it may affect the real-time data synchronization and mapping capabilities of the application.

Collector is easy for anyone to pick up for collecting field data. Seamless integration with other ArcGIS software. Easy to share surveys with coworkers and to set up new surveys. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Can be costly for a small team with low funding. If on Android, there are two apps which both work fine, but it can be confusing deciding on one to stick with. Difficult to make edits on smartphone (easy to click on the wrong place by mistake). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Easy to train non-GIS competent members of staff up on its use. I find it very easy to set up templates for surveys through ArcGIS Online which can be reused

The collector app does a job that open source can't fill. We tried looking for free alternatives but the reliability of the collector app/ the arc package was a massive plus. There are currently two apps on Android for the collector app. The one which I would advise our consultants to use is the beta app, this really shouldn't be the case anymore.

Prior to using it there was a huge void in my work field of fiber optics. Using Arcgis drastically made my days easier and more efficient by enabling me to review the entire network by piece instead of only having ability to study little portions of a network with paper prints. iPads are hard to see in the bright light in Phoenix, We add non-glare screen protectors, but that also makes the screen dimmer and less sharp. To compound the situation the Collector app gets grayed out when you start editing so it's almost impossible to see where to manually place/move the feature you are editing with respect to the surrounding features on the map, I believe the target area around the cross-hairs is meant to be clear to see so I think you just need to make sure the symbols within the target area do not get grayed out. I do think it's a great idea to gray the map out on the rest of the screen because that will help draw your eye to the focal area that you are editing.

I have attribute-dependent symbology that is meant to change color/shape when you update the feature to say "done" for example. The symbols (assigned in AGOL) don't update automatically. I have to back out of the map, open a different map, then open my map again to force the symbols to redraw. On the other hand the symbols that come through from an MXD that I have published to a map service refresh automatically. So there must be a bug with the redraw of AGOL symbols.

The problem is all of the bugs... sync issues, couldn't update feature issues, the app crashes all of the time on Android, and some of the time on iOS. At the conference ESRI is so excited to present their newest, shiniest product. Please just stop. You seem to be spreading yourself thin. Please just make the products you have work, and work well. The biggest problem is that now we GIS professionals have rolled this out to field workers to "improve efficiency", but the more bugs we run into, the more time consuming their (and my) jobs become, and the field workers lose faith in the product.
