What is Altair SimSolid?

By performing structural analyses on fully-featured CAD assemblies within minutes, SimSolid is the game-changing simulation technology for designers, engineers, and analysts. It eliminates geometry preparation and meshing: the two most time-consuming, expertise-extensive, and error-prone tasks performed in a conventional structural simulation. Multiple design scenarios can be simulated quickly under real-life conditions. Early CAD models, in any common format, can be used. SimSolid tolerance of imprecise geometry means that, unlike CAD-embedded simulation tools, there is no need to simplify complex geometries before analyzing designs. What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?

I have been using SIMSOLID for over two years, and its advanced meshless modeling capabilities have proven invaluable in expediting the analysis of complex geometries. This software has significantly enhanced my ability to provide rapid results to my CAE team, enabling them to make timely decisions and implement appropriate design modifications.

SIMSOLID has been particularly beneficial during the conceptual design phase of several projects, including the design of lifting devices, steel structures, rail structures, heavy mining equipment, and various general mechanical systems. The efficiency of the software has allowed me to assess the reliability of multiple design iterations quickly and effectively, thus saving considerable time during the early stages of development. Once a mature design is reached, I conduct further validation using more detailed finite element analysis (FEA) tools, such as HyperMesh, to obtain more precise stress values.

The ability to extract reaction forces, apply contact interactions swiftly, assign various joint properties, and conduct a range of analyses—from linear static to fatigue and complex vibration analysis—are some of the key features that make SIMSOLID highly efficient for preliminary evaluations. This versatility has been instrumental in providing swift insights into design iterations and offering informed recommendations.

In summary, SIMSOLID has been a crucial tool for my team during the conceptual phase of design, allowing for the timely selection of appropriate design modifications and significantly reducing the time required to achieve a mature model. What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?

While SIMSOLID offers significant advantages in rapid conceptual analysis, there are a few areas where it falls short. First, the accuracy of stress values can sometimes be a concern, especially when compared to more detailed finite element analysis tools. While it serves well in the early stages of design, the stress results often require further validation through more robust FEA software to ensure precision.

Additionally, the running time can be significantly impacted when dealing with multiple contact interactions, which detracts from the software's otherwise efficient performance. This issue becomes particularly noticeable in complex assemblies where multiple joints or contacts are involved, leading to longer computation times.

What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?

Altair SimSolid is an unparalleled tool, allowing you to evaluate design concepts in seconds until you find the one that performs best and meets the specific requirements of each project. The learning curve of Altair is very fast, with short, intuitive, and sufficient training sessions to get you started working on your own projects.

There are two aspects of Altair SimSolid that I find most noteworthy: (1) Automation of preprocessing, and (2) the evaluation of new models. (1) Reading complex assemblies is very fast, and the software is extremely capable of correctly recognizing contacts, welds, and even bolts/nuts, without requiring CAD simplification. (2) Once a simulation model is created, it is very simple to duplicate it and apply it to a new geometry without making major adjustments.

I use Altair SimSolid in my projects because it allows me to evaluate the performance of complete assemblies at a very low computational cost, speeding up my design processes. Finally, it is worth noting its compatibility with other Altair products, enabling the verification of models with traditional finite elements (with mesh), complementing the analysis with topology optimization, or even evaluating multiphysics with EDEM. What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?

It's not a problem specific to Altair, but once you've experienced simulating without a mesh and getting results in such a short time, you feel that it would be great to have an equivalent tool for other physics, such as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Providing solutions for problems that cannot be addressed through traditional finite element analysis (with mesh) without a lot of preprocessing. Altair SimSolid is perfect for dealing with complex assemblies, high number of components, hundreds/thousands of weldings or fasteners, non-linearities, and transient phenomena. The most helpful feature about simsolid is its quickness in pre-processing a model. When in need of a quick simulation for verfifying things, Simsolid is the best because you can quickly generate the model. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

There are few downsides related to it. If I were to find some disadvantage, I would say it is the hard time you will have when trying to track down the incertanties inside the model. But honestly, if you got to this point you should just use Hypermesh... Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It solves the time-consumming process a CAE engineer has to go through when setting up a model. What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?

There are two major advantages. First, you can bring in large assemblies like an dozer or excavator frame and it will easlily connect or determine the contact between items that are not contacting or that are interfering. This allows one to bring in files or components that are designed for manufacturing like large weldments without having to alter them first to have exactly face to face contact. The other is that after bringing in the large assembly, you do not have to mesh it to be able to do contact analysis. Also, even with contact, the analysis runs extremely quickly for the complexity of the model Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
