Why Elsevier is insisting on changing Mendeley functionalities

Mendeley has been an excellent software for a long time. The current moves from Elsevier to push the Mendeley reference manager and Cite, instead of Mendeley desktop, although the lack of features in the new software and the superiority of the old one. It looks like the Mendeley Team is destroying the software in its new versions! Is it a plan for Elsevier to lose the users? I have been teaching Mendeley for a long time in workshops and working as an advocate and advisor for it, but it seems that everything has an end. What are your impressions?

I think this is an awful move. The reference manager is clunky, slow, and user hostile. The good news is that (for now) it is possible to import your library from Mendeley into Zotero with relatively little effort. I suggest doing this ASAP before that gets nixed. File > import > Mendeley reference manager login and just go make a tea or coffee while you wait for it to finish. Zotero looks and feels a lot like Mendeley desktop, so it is a really small learning curve to transition.
