I didn’t know I was supposed to register — do I need to worry about past sales?

Greetings, It sounds like you were subject to tax all along as opposed to a new sales tax law. In my experience, once you register, most states will ask you for those previous returns. Complete them and mail them in at the same time. Then request abatement for penalties. If you mail them in one by one, the state may only allow you to abate one month of penalties. Sorry your tax professional did not advise you of this. Hope it worked out! Regards Madison

It depends on the amount of sales you had and in which states. Do you owe more than $10,000 in taxes? A state probably isn’t going to just let that go, and you could create exposure when you register. If you’re concerned about the liability of past sales, schedule a free consultation with our Professional Services team to discuss your options.
