You bet it is a great question and answer i will give technically for my tech fanatics out there. Lets take an example there is a product by intellect called CBS - Core Banking system and is used in many banks worldwide for allied operations. The costing to organisations are purely on whether they want vendor support (without purchasing full software without source code) or full software purchase with source code so everything can be handled internally with least resources being used thus cost effective.
