How do I backup my data online?

The most efficient way to back up data online, which I learned from the awesome IDrive technicians, is to manage most of the back up tasks logging in to one’s IDrive account online, rather than trying to manage back up tasks through the desktop app/shortcut. Peace-

Mostly I use Sync Method 1 Open IDrive account online, sign in, select Sync and cloud storage. Either select and drag files into an existing folder in Sync/Cloud Storage or use the upload icon Method 2 Download IDrive software to PC. Open this software, and select Sync. Select 'Selective Sync Down'. Select which folders you want to Sync with the online IDrive storage. I found there are document/picture/video files etc I do not want synced to IDrive online. Thus I use a separate Folder 'New Files for IDrive' and organise the files on line later. Method 2 is more robust/allows greater amounts of data to upload. Method 1 may freeze at times if the command is too complex.

With iDrive it's extremely easy to Back-up "on line" or in other words to the Cloud. i Drive has a more classic interface (which I prefer) than some other services which allows you to schedule a backup, select the drives (internal and external) you wish to keep current and once fully backed up, which can take a while depending on how much data you have ( I had 7TB so it took over 7 days for my initial Backup). Once you have a baseline backup, then the backups are incremental and take typically take about 1.5 hrs. I also have a 6TB RAID-1, pair backing up constantly from Time Machine on my M1 MAC mini so I only run the i Drive backup once a week. I turn off the Time Machine "auto backup" before the scheduled time for i Drive as advised to do by them.

My typical backup option includes full machine and full disk clones. There’s a “cloud” option available. Make sure your bandwidth is decent.

After some research that matched my needs for two Apple laptop computers and "not so massive" data, I subscribed to IDrive basic package. The instructions for setup were good. IDrive requires a local download on each machine to manage the backup/restore process. Best option is to let IDrive default to which directories to backup, but it is certainly worth taking a look at your own specific needs. I played around with the timing of the two daily events: one is a scan for files and the second is the actual backup. Both events take time and computer resources, especially initially. The first time took 12 or more hours. The laptop was functional but barely. After the first upload I am unaware of any disruption.

You choose the files or folders that you would like to have backed up. Then schedule when you would like for that to happen. iDrive does the rest automatically!
