I've used Grass on it's own in the past, however I really enjoy the fact that it is available within QGIS within a plugin. This makes using the best features of GRASS easily accessible.
There are many website which support such operation like earthexplorer.usgs.gov which do the same. Functions to apply are not simple as ArcGIS
Ease with which you can convert raster data and create other raster data sets. A wide variety of raster data conversions. Also, the speed and quality of the conversions is very good.
