It performs extremely well across a range of educational themes and departments and with recent AI tools makes the creation of educational content and processes much more accessible to designers. With careful consideration of the user experience it is possible to create very engaging and comprehensive educational experiences **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** It can take some time to become knowledgeable enough with all of the different tools Brightspace offers in order to make informed decisions about what might work best in certain places and for certain tasks. The range of possible roles and permissions across the platform can be overwhelming - it's best to focus on core established roles and make modifications and tweaks according to you own requirements later. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Brightspace enables us to provide quality, engaging training and education to a broad spectrum of learners across our environment (sport), including a large number of time-poor volunteers who appreciate being able to access the information they need at a time suitable for them. We can now provide training and educational support in a much more learner-focussed and stimulating manner than before ### 2. It allows me to do a lot of HTML coding to create the pages I want, making them colorful and bright, which provides an intuitive experience for students, similar to what they might find on the web. I also appreciate the functionality of the platform's setup, as it enables me to create classes in a structured and meaningful way by adding audio and video, really whatever I need. The content builder for units and pages facilitates a nice linear way to design a class. Additionally, I would rate it a 10 out of 10 and say it's probably the best of all the LMSs I've used. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** I think some of the click paths are a little bit onerous. Sometimes there's not an easy way to access content, except through many clicks. Also, maybe a little more flexibility with how you design the home pages could be beneficial. I think the template function doesn't really do much. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use D2L Brightspace for all my classes. It offers flexibility with open HTML for authoring courses, creating colorful and intuitive pages. Adding audio and video is easy, making courses structured and meaningful, enhancing the student experience to mimic the open web. ### 3. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the system remained fully operational without any failures. The post-sales support is efficient, with a strong partnership to assist clients with their projects. Additionally, the integration with various applications is a great advantage, and I’m exploring the BI features to create data dashboards. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** What I dislike is the efficiency of the new data set system, which has yet to be proven. This forces me to consider creating APIs or purchasing additional tools. Moreover, the absence of an integrated video system is an issue, as it requires the client to contract a separate service. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** Give it a chance, don't look at the value of the proposal but rather the benefits you can have. Then talk to a D2L consultant and negotiate the price. But first, try it out. I've had more than 3000 users online using the system at the same time and the system didn't even show any slowness. Of course, I coordinated with D2L support, which was efficient and ensured that no slowness occurred. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** I see that the integration of new tools such as educational technology support like H5P and artificial intelligence, however, they still don't benefit me as they are a package to be purchased separately. ### 4. Courses look fresh, clean, and easy to use for both staff and students. The added bonus that really adds to the experience is tools like QuickEval, Class Progress and Intelligent Agents. These tools make Brightspace stand out from the crowd when it comes to other VLE's and provide our staff with the tools that can help them stage academic interventions. These tools allow our staff to quickly pinpoint students progress and intervene using automated emails. I also like how it integrates with existing tools we use (Turnitin, SCORM, Respondus, YuJa Panorama, Microsoft Teams). The integrations are easy to manage and create a seamless experiences for our staff and learners. Finally I would have to argue that the support from D2L is unmatched, any issues we have faced have been resolved swiftly and the active community sites help with day-to-day queries. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** There are some areas where I personally feel like Brightspace is lacking data analytics. One example would be when an announcement is posted in a course it would be great to see how many students have read the announcement (this is a feature available in Blackboard). While the impact is minimal it was a well used feature in our previous VLE, allowing staff to track engagement with their learners. I have no major dislikes with the VLE - performance is good, it runs well and quickly, my dislikes are minor "niggles" where I wish you could change the background colour, or have more options for release conditions. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** With our previous VLE we definitely had issues where some teaching teams rarely used the tool. This was usually down to the perceived difficulty in adding materials to a course. Brightspace immediately brought down those barriers for those teams. Its opened up a digital space for those teams to work online with their students and provide an area for materials to be collated as well as encouraged them to try more digital tools and overall boosted their technical knowledge. This has also encouraged many teams to start using digital assessments (Quizzes) that mark automatically saving time on grading student work. It has also allowed us to save money by ending our contract with a tool that was used for assessment (Questionmark). ### 5. I also appreciate the support teams available over chat, as well as our direct teams. The customizations are helpful too, especially since they’re role-based. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** With the API-specific rules, if a user doesn’t have permission to access certain materials, those items can’t be pulled through the API. In stricter situations, it would be helpful if users could retrieve data even when it falls outside their role permissions. Creating an API role dashboard could make that possible and give us a clearer way to manage access. Also, we’re not fans of the discussion boards; that area feels clunky and is hard for students to navigate. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** At this time, we’re solving many of our own problems through API calls. One area we haven’t been able to address is API-controlled course merging. Since we have Ellucian ILP, we’ve exhausted all other ideas, but this remains unresolved. ### 6. Brightspace’s emphasis on accessibility has consistently made it possible to create inclusive, high quality online learning experiences. Equally valuable is the outstanding support provided by the D2L team. Their responsiveness, expertise, and genuine commitment to customer success have been consistent throughout my experience. Combined with the system’s long term stability and dependable performance, Brightspace has proven to be a trustworthy, well evolved LMS that I’m proud to recommend. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** I wouldn’t really use the word “dislike.” There are just a few things I’d like to see improved, especially in the attendance area. For example, the name column isn’t fixed the way it is in the gradebook, which makes the attendance view less user-friendly and a bit harder to navigate. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** Brightspace has been a reliable learning management system for us, and we’ve been using it for 17 years. It provides a clean, well-organized space for both instructors and students. That reliability has helped me in my job because I can spend less time dealing with day-to-day issues and more time focusing on other priorities, including introducing new features and improvements within Brightspace. ### 7. The user and course management features are my most used, and D2L Brightspace makes everything easier to handle on the administrative side. Managing enrollments, roles, and permissions is very straightforward, reducing time and errors. The initial setup was very, very easy too. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The data hub and data sets are the biggest headaches. D2L Brightspace is a well-developed, easy-to-use platform with features that support engaging, personalized learning experiences such as Creator+ with H5P as well as intelligence agents that can help you automate assignment release and communications or follow-up. In addition, they have added Lumi the AI product that can suggest ways to develop your content, and can be set up as a chat bot to help both learners and content builders. . There are dozens of third-party products that can be integrated which can further support and personalize learning, making it more impactful. Brightspace, in my experience, out performs any other system. They use a continuous delivery of updates and utilize research and extensive testing before releasing it in the live platform. D2L Brightspace places a strong emphasis on accessibility ensuring their product provides the greatest access for anyone that wishes to learn. They also have an exceptional Community and Learning Center, so both learners and course builders understand how to interact with the platform. They take it a step further by providing access to supportive, knowledgeable Customer Success and Account Managers who help empower successful implementation and guide continuous improvement. Without a doubt D2L Brightspace has provided us the most economical platform with the greatest level of functionality. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** New users, primarily content builders, may be overwhelmed by all the available options and features. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** D2L Brightspace is empowering our teams by being able to reach more of our external clients and stakeholders with access to foundational training content. The benefits we are experiencing are an increase in the number of individuals successfully implementing and completing our processes thus impacting the communities they serve. Additionally, employees are more intentional and able to focus on relationships and personalized empowerment. ### 10. The intelligent agents in Brightspace lift a huge burden from our Deaf teachers by facilitating a vast range of automated communication in a written language. The initial setup was straightforward, with thoughtful discussions of our needs and helpful onboarding training, allowing us to independently develop our courses. I also value that D2L seems responsive to feedback and committed to ongoing development. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Because a lot of our course assessments are video-based, it would help us enormously if D2L Brightspace facilitated a preview option - rather than having to download - video files that have not been recorded directly via the platform, i.e. video files that have been uploaded or drag-and-dropped from a source outside of D2L Brightspace. Also, because so much of our content is video-based, if D2L Brightspace had an in-built DRM to protect videos from being downloaded by learners, that would be great.
