Codecademy has courses created with simplicity in mind, but this courses are very effective helping people learn to code in many different languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, Javascript and more.

I like the format of the wizard-style teaching with opportunities to write working examples.

It's really great for nailing the basics of a lot of languages (and other tools now!) and helpful for learning syntax if you're trying to jump into something new.
