Axure describes itself as an all-in-one UX design tool that can take you from information architecture through hi-fi prototyping. While I end up using it at least a little bit during the ideation and wireframing end of my own process, where I find it really excels is prototyping. There's no other tool that's come anywhere near the level of granularity Axure provides for making fully interactive prototypes -- as opposed to static screens strung together with hot spots, like you get with something like Invision or Balsamiq. For this reason, it's not only ideal for web prototyping, but also mobile and embedded prototyping.
The output of Axure is html/css/js, so it's easy to share a link to a prototype with anyone. You can host it on your own web server or just use the built-in service you get for free with your Axure license. So, you (the designer) can easily share a prototype with your engineers, or you (the researcher) can easily conduct remote usability tests without foisting a complicated setup on your participants.
I like the swiftness with which you can prototype interfaces and present them to customers, instead of developing blueprints.
All the options the software gives you is just an incredible toolkit to improve UI design and increase prototyping and wireframing speed.
