I mainly use Zulip for running academic research collaborations. I have found it to be much better than Slack. In particular, it allows a much more fine-grained organization of content (via topics). The search features are quite powerful. It also has support for LaTeX, which we use quite a bit. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The mobile app is usable but could still be improved. For instance, it is not possible to see pending messages in different organizations at a single glance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
