## WebWorks ePublisher Reviews
  ### 1. Creating great online help from Framemaker or Word documentation

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Julian W. | Director Product Documentation, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 14, 2024

**What do you like best about WebWorks ePublisher?**

WebWorks has two basic parts, express which enables fast conversion of FrameMaker or Word into an online help with various possible outputs, including HTML5 and Eclipse. The second part WebWorks Designer enbles you tpo customize the look and feel of the output to match the product look and feel. After creating the design and saving it as stationary it is almost a one-click operation to create the online help.

**What do you dislike about WebWorks ePublisher?**

Older versions of WebWorks were easier to program to provide the desired look andf feel. The current version has a lot more automation but for someone who wants to program it to the exact look and feel of the product for which online help is being created has a harder job.

**What problems is WebWorks ePublisher solving and how is that benefiting you?**

WebWorks enabled us to convert multiple FrameMaker books into a single online help that had the same look and feel as the software being documented.

  ### 2. Ideal for testing build outputs

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric T. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2024

**What do you like best about WebWorks ePublisher?**

One of the most interesting feature is the simplicity to setup a project and executing a build. I use this a lot to create partial content of my online help to verify the final rendering.

**What do you dislike about WebWorks ePublisher?**

Defining the stylesheet of the project is a bit cumbersome, and can only be done by a specific Designer role. This makes the adjustments works time heavy and necessits a lot of interactions with different types of user + webworks designer support team.

**What problems is WebWorks ePublisher solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Makes good use from DITA files.

  ### 3. A great tool to convert FrameMaker to online help

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Julian W. | Director Product Documentation, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2022

**What do you like best about WebWorks ePublisher?**

The tool is very flexible and if you know XML and XSL you can tailor it to a fine degree. Once setup the conversion of a FM files, including multiple FM books is at the touch of a button.

**What do you dislike about WebWorks ePublisher?**

We needed a KB for our documentation and not online help. Webworks was not designed to create a KB.

**What problems is WebWorks ePublisher solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating an online help from multiple books that describe a product

  ### 4. Great platform for mid-size company

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 11, 2016

**What do you like best about WebWorks ePublisher?**

I enjoy the experience for the end user, it can be extremely personalized and tailored to specific needs.

**What do you dislike about WebWorks ePublisher?**

Dislike some of the correspondence features, PDF and other document uploads seem to be complicated for users. Reviewing submissions as an administrator can also be complicated, they often appear grouped together with no ability to sort through for type or time stamp.

**Recommendations to others considering WebWorks ePublisher:**

Excellent team to work with, great product for midsize organization with thousands of interactions per day.

**What problems is WebWorks ePublisher solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are loosing a lot of our dependence on paper forms and writing checks or paying over the phone for our customers. It is very helpful to have the required red asterisks on forms for those filling them out, as well as the seamless ability to pay online! Removes human error from the process.

  ### 5. The most powerful way to publish FrameMaker content

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dave T. | Technical Project Coordinator, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2015

**What do you like best about WebWorks ePublisher?**

* Wide variety of customizable output formats including CHM, JavaHelp, old-school framed HTML help, modern responsive web help, Oracle help, pure XML, etc.
* Enables tech writing teams to take (often quite old) FrameMaker content and generate modern-looking online documentation without having to learn DITA.
* Scriptable, integrates easily into automated build environments.

**What do you dislike about WebWorks ePublisher?**

ePublisher's strength is also its weakness. Its extensive output formats can be tricky to customize beyond the basic look and feel provided out of the box. Any customization you need that is not built in can be done, but you need to edit XSLT code to do it, which is beyond most users.

**Recommendations to others considering WebWorks ePublisher:**

WebWorks ePublisher is (in my opinion) the gold standard for converting legacy FrameMaker content to modern online formats. If you have significant legacy content and want or need to stick with FrameMaker, it's the best tool for the job. Other tools, like Madcap Flare, may be better if your desire is to *migrate* from Frame to an online-native technical publishing platform. It all depends on what your requirements are.

This review is based on the FrameMaker online publishing functionality. The product also supports Microsoft Word but I have never used that.

**What problems is WebWorks ePublisher solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had a lot of technical documentation content built and refined in FrameMaker over many years. And while FrameMaker is great at producing printed and PDF documentation, it was never designed for the web-based documentation expected today.

WebWorks ePublisher enabled us to continue to use our valuable content and publish it in modern formats in sophisticated ways. It reduced costs because writing teams could continue to use the tool they know, and provided business benefits by providing technical documentation in modern web formats in a cost effective way.
