## VMware vSAN Reviews
  ### 1. Simplifies Storage Management with Strong Performance and Visibility

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eduardo F. | Consulate Assistant, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 11, 2026

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I like how it simplifies storage management by converging compute and storage into a single platform. Instead of managing storage arrays, storage resources are aggregated directly from ESXi hosts, which reduces the infrastructure complexity and operational costs. It also, the combination of performance, simplicity, and operational visibility. From the support standpoint, it provides excellent visibility into the health of the storage.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

One limitation is that it is tightly coupled to the VMware Ecosystem. Organizations that operate heterogeneous environments or want greater flexibility in their infrastructure choices may find that this increases vendor dependency.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It solves several challenges associated with traditional storage infrastructure. Historically, organizations had to manage separate storage arrays, storage networks, and visualization platforms, which increased complexity, operational overhead, and troubleshooting effort. vSAN consolidates storage directly into the vSphere environment, allowing compute and storage resources to be managed as a simple platform.

  ### 2. Cost-Effective Solution for Educational Labs

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Naveen Reddy C. | Java Software Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2026

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I used VMware vSAN for connecting to practice networking lab sessions in college. It's great for universities since it makes managing large, complex lab setups easy and cost-effective, saving on infrastructure and other costs. Instead of having to buy expensive external drivers, we use vSAN, which helps free up the budget for students instead of spending on hardware. The initial setup was straightforward, requiring just a couple of instructions.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

If there is a scenario where hundreds of students log in at the same time, VMware vSAN can bottleneck, causing frustratingly slow desktop and app loading times.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VMware vSAN saves on infrastructure costs for complex lab setups in universities, eliminating the need for expensive external drives, freeing up budget for students.

  ### 3. Cost effective HCI Storage Solution

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

It's more granular & efficient than creating LUNs like in the past. With vSAN your datastore is easier to manage.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Strict requirements if upgrading to vSAN ESA, you need vsan ready nodes which are NVMe-only, if you have SAS disks then you need to use the OSA architecture.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has allowed us to use local storage from our ESXi nodes to build our datastore.
It solved our IOPS issues we had with traditional SAN.

  ### 4. VMware vSAN your new business storage

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hla Bhone A. | System Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2025

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

As someone working in a virtualized environment, what I really like about VMware vSAN is how it makes storage super simple. Since it’s built right into the ESXi hypervisor, I don’t need to deal with separate storage systems — everything is managed straight from vCenter. It’s a lot easier to handle, especially when you’re managing both compute and storage in one place. Makes day-to-day operations smoother and less of a headache.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Licensing can get expensive, and troubleshooting isn’t always straightforward if you’re new to vSAN.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

vSAN solves the hassle of managing separate storage systems by combining compute and storage into a single platform. For me, it means easier setup, centralized management through vCenter, and less time spent troubleshooting traditional SAN issues. It also scales easily as our environment grows.

Storage management complexity

  ### 25. Why I used VMware vSAN over other storage products

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dilshan L. | Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

VMware vSAN is software software-defined storage solution. When we are using vSAN we do not need to maintain separate storage solutions. It reduces the CAPEX & OPEX cost and administrative overhead. These days companies are more concerned about cost. This is a major benefit of using vSAN. Maintaining separate hardware storage devices requires knowledgeable technical people. We need to purchase a separate SAN device from another vendor. It will create huge administrative overhead for the company. Using vSAN we can save power, cooling, cabling & space costs. VMware vSAN is a very reliable, fast storage solution.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Scaling up vSAN is difficult with VCF. We cannot scale up one server of the cluster when using vSAN with VCF. We need to upgrade all the servers.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Reduce CAPEX & OPEX costs - We do not need to purchase & maintain separate SAN solutions. Using an integrated server ( for RAM, CUP, and Storage) instead of a separate solution will reduce the power, cooling, cabling & space costs.
Reduce administrative overhead - Maintaining a single vendor instead of multiple vendors reduces the administrative overhead

  ### 27. vSAN-Ultimate VMware HCI

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Md Tanjil Islam B. | Infrastructure Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 14, 2020

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

Easy to manage, easy to scale up, better performance, and monitoring. Ability to stretch the cluster across the city to form a vSAN stretch cluster, which is definitely a great feature by VMware.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Host Isolation due to network failure can cause the data loss also. It requires SSD disk for form a vSAN cluster, which could be a budget issue for future expansion.
Always recommended to use the same hardware, so it could be difficult to expand the cluster size after one or more business year as the hardware specs might get changed by the hardware vendor.

**Recommendations to others considering VMware vSAN:**

Please consider a minimum of 5 physical hosts for the vSAN production cluster.
Please make sure at least 2 SSD drive for creating a disk group for better performance.
It will reduce the cost of purchasing and maintaining another storage (which might require additional skilled resources to maintain).
Please purchase the vSAN ready node, which is available from Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Huawei.
Please consider the latest hardware and do a proper sizing plan for future expansion.
It is always good to create new cluster instead of expanding the old cluster.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are running VMware Horizon Desktop and Workspace One (Airwatch) on the vSAN platform.
It is built with HP vSAN ready nodes (specialized server designed for vSAN environment).
Where the users are accessing the order processing application of a pharmaceuticals company.
We are using some install clone feature from Horizon for which vSAN is doing great to provide better performance.

  ### 28. VSAN For the Data Center, Great Replacement for 3-Tier

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rodney B. | Server Administrator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

Prior to VSAN, we were had been a traditional SAN environment. Having the seperate fabric switch, having to make changes to add or remove host, was always a hassle. Moving to VSAN Ready nodes just makes managing storage easy. Need more space, Add a node to the cluster. Now, with VSAN Max, other storage can be tied to it.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

So far, I have not seen any downsides. There is the issue of having configured one large VSAN pool, so if I rename a VM, I can no longer vMotion to other storage to get the folder names\structure changed on the storage. However, I beleive that is more of how it was deployed rather than a limitation within VSAN.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The complexity of managing a traditional three tier infrastructure and the management overhead that goes with it.

  ### 29. vSAN - Resilient storage, scalable and easy to maintain!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alexandar V. | Senior Engineer HCI, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I really appreciate the ease of deployment, as well as being very scalable with downsizing or upscaling existing clusters. vSAN as a storage is very resilient, self-healing, and very easy to manage. In a few minutes, you can easily deploy large clusters so implementation is a peace of cake. VMware support is highly competent and replies almost immediately upon opening a ticket. You have a bunch of features such as deduplication and compression, various types of RAID levels, encryption, file services, and so on.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

The initial cost for the certified hardware and license costs.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps solve the need of fast and resilient storage in remote offices and branches, in places not having the possibility for using FC or File-based storage. As HCI solution it helps build quality data centers everywhere, even on vehicles.

  ### 30. vSAN is versatile and effective virtualization data storage

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Travis R. | Information Technology Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 29, 2024

vSAN can be a truely set-it and forget-it solution in terms of administration. It is can be scaled and tailored to fit storage requirements. Its integration with the VMware environements provide a stability, resiliance, and automated monitoring capabilities.
It is an ideal choice with any HCI deployments and its featureset including functionality, performance, and reliability is continously growing.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Cost and procurement can be a challenge for smaller and medium sized deployments and depending on your current licensing my increase your budget for storage-heavy virtual environments.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

vSAN provides a storage-tier for my virtulization environement that require little to no-maintenance, it is scalable for future growth, and its integration with Skyline provides me with the piece of mind that everything is running smoothly.

  ### 31. VMware vSAN is great for HCI Storage on vSphere Clusters

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jonathan L. | Server Administrator, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 06, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I like how easy it is to setup and the fact that is "just works" with my vSphere clusters. Not only does if provide for all the options you would want for an enterprise deployment, but configuring those options is simple in the vCenter interface I am already use to using.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

The only issues I have seen in my experience involve hardware not listed on the HCL, or in 2-node cluster scenarios where the cluster looses network connectivity with the vSAN Witness node. Both of those issues are easily correctable, however having additional flexibility would make vSAN even better.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Resilient storage for remote office/branch office locations, this is exremely beneficial for us to maintain critical operations at remote branch locations where we cannot afford to have downtime.

  ### 34. virtual storage that's cool but...

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aitor F. | Técnico de compras, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 06, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

It is easy to configure and manage from the same vCenter, without the need for additional hardware or software. It saves you space and costs, as you don't need to buy external storage arrays or licenses from other manufacturers. It allows you to take advantage of VMware technologies, such as vMotion, HA, DRS, etc., and the specific functionalities of vSAN, such as deduplication, compression, encryption, etc. It gives you the option to choose between different types of disks (SSD, HDD, NVMe, etc.) and to configure the level of data protection according to the number of failures you want to tolerate.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

It requires quite demanding minimum hardware and software requirements, such as having at least three ESXi hosts, a 10 Gbps network card, a compatible version of vSphere, etc. It can generate high network traffic between cluster nodes, especially if there are many write operations or data resynchronizations. It may have compatibility issues with some devices or drivers that are not certified by VMware, which can affect the operation or technical support of vSAN. It can be difficult to monitor and diagnose in case there is a failure or incident, as many vSAN logs and parameters need to be reviewed.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not having to buy or maintain external storage cabinets, which are expensive and take up space

  ### 35. Review of vSAN

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I like the ability to manage compute, memory, and storage in a single interface.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

I have had challenges with identifying issues as being a VMware support concern or a concern of the hardware vendor, and the support teams would sometimes point to the other vendor. Also, early on I would get bad advice from the hardware vendor on troubleshooting vSAN issues, e.g. 'just hot swap the failed (cache) disk'. Fortunately I was well-read on how vSAN functioned and didn't heed that directive. But in the last few years it seems vendors' support teams are more aware of the nature of vSAN. I would like to be able to split a vSAN datastore into separate partitions in order to do functions like rename VMs and their folders/files via storage vMotion, without having to stand up a separate datastore.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Less hardware to manage (no separate SAN/NAS); more peers understand and administer VMware but not storage platforms.

  ### 36. VMware vSAN - the leading HCI technology

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

What you will love most about VMware vSAN is its ease of use. With just small amount of effort both time and knowledge wise, you are able to get a very powerful distributed storage system that simply works. It uses your standard network and delivers distributed system that is able to support even the most demanding workload. It is very easy to implement and as most capabilities are tied to software defined approach, you are able to get more features with regular product updates.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

There can be some tricky corner cases that may trigger for certain workloads in combination with certain vSAN cluster configs. I especially advise to read all design materials with ephasis on one large vSAN cluster versus more smaller VSAN clusters.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

vSAN is able to simplify all general purpose demanding workloads. It helps with many aspects that would have to be solved with traditional HW setups and specific storage fabrics. vSAN is able to work in most scenarios supporting the most demanding workloads like DB servers, SAP implementations etc.

  ### 37. Benefits of vSAN for HCI Systems

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

We use vSAN with Dell VxRail HCI systems and have found the following use cases to be extremely useful in our environment:
1. Deduplication and Compression - Huge storage cost savings by checking these boxes
2. vSAN Encryption - We use Cloudlink as a key provider for our encryption and it integrates well with vSAN
3. Skyline Health - Self diagnostics and alerting built in to vSAN that monitors every component and makes it simple to find KBs for common issues
4. High Availability - Between HA, DRS, and vSAN Disk Group management, a lot can go wrong in your cluster before it affects VM uptime

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

The only major difference I've noticed between vSAN and traditional SAN is ESXi maintenance. With SAN, we could easily put any ESXi host into maintenance mode without affecting the storage whatsoever. With vSAN, an ESXi host must first evacuate data or stay under the faults to tolerate before doing any maintenance which can lead to much longer cluster maintenance windows.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Integrates storage with the system (HCI) to move away from traditional SAN requirements and headaches

  ### 38. vSAN a reliable and efficient solution

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nathan S. | Principal Systems Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

I was really impressed with how vSAN performed and simplified the storage usage of the prototype cluster I initially deployed. We used the same approach then to develop a prototype and final solution, which is where the budget-friendly part comes in. I was able to leverage lessons-learned, as well as upgrade licenses to quickly deploy a tested solution that allowed me to take full advantage of the hardware solutions on-hand - basically maximising our storage utilization. It also helped that when we had to run a full-stack upgrade that vSAN continued to perform flawlessly as we did rolling updates during a maintenance cycle.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

The initial set-up at the time was a challenge and we needed to bring in a vSphere tech to help us identify some unique configurations to help us get going - While that may not be the case every time, it did slow us down initially which was unfortunate at the time.

Recent licencing changes do have us concerned, but we're still assessing impacts.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to shrink the physical footprint of a deployable solution. vSAN offered us a way to take advantage of datacenter and ruggedized solutions in smaller and smaller footprints with no drop-off in performance or capability.

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

VMware VSAN is a highly efficient, scalable and fully integrated solution managed through vCenter. Some of the advantages include..

Reducing TCO: By using already available hardware instead of buying new. Spinning disks can be used with SSDs to increase storage capacity with substantial increase in performance compared to an all spinning disk Storage array.

Scalability: Doesn't require expensive, proprietary hardware and off-the-shelf hardware can be used for increases in speed/capacity.

Management: Tightly integrated with the already familiar interface of vCenter which is used for everyday management and implementation.

Data Resiliency: Includes features like snapshots, replication and data migration for data resiliency and disaster recovery.

Overall a very good addition to the VMware suite or products.

  ### 50. Acceptable solution for RoBo installation in VMware environments, sub-par support, high TCO

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Facilities Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 11, 2024

**What do you like best about VMware vSAN?**

It's an acceptable solution to install in small size, remote-branch VMware environments, easy to implement, decent performance, if the customer already has a need for VMware virtualization so thath it needs some ESXi host anyway, also the economics could work, particularly for small RoBo setups.

**What do you dislike about VMware vSAN?**

Basically still inferior to other solutions on the market, for example losing a disk in OSA mode equals losing the entire node. ESA mode disk requirement (at least 4 SSDs) is high for small setups. VMware support must definitely improve, documentation, which is lacking information on crucial points, eg. encryption and data compression behaviours. When counting up VMware licenses and hardware cost, the TCO isn't competitive compared to other HCI solutions nor to traditional SAN hardware.

**What problems is VMware vSAN solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Small roBO installations storage.
