## VideoLan Reviews
  ### 1. Lightweight, Fast, and Versatile—VLC Plays Everything Seamlessly

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shoaib S. | People and Culture Officer, Consulting, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2026

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

It’s the most lightweight media solution out there, and also one of the most versatile. It’s super fast and easy to navigate because there isn’t a complex learning curve. It plays almost any media format that you throw at it. You can use it on mobile, Android TV, and laptops (Windows and Mac).

I also use it for streaming solutions such as Stremio, since it integrates well with the Android box. If I want, I can use the local media player that comes pre-installed on the streaming box, or I can use VLC—and 9 out of 10 times, VLC outperforms. It’s free of cost too, which makes it a no-brainer for everyone.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

Nothing really—I've never had any issues with it. It works seamlessly for everything I need it to do, and it always fits the purpose I have in mind.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All my media playback is done via VLC. whether it be on PC, Mobile or TV.

  ### 2. ALL IN ONE Swiss Army Knife FREE Media Production App!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shawn S. | Owner/Operator/Consultant/Freelance, Media Production, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2026

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

I first learned how to leverage this little gem of a freebie while I was working at the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern in IL. I’d already been using it for years as a media player and for a few basic features, but then I discovered screen recording. Then I found the streaming side of it. Then the encoding tools. And after that… well, what can’t it do?

For a free app that can re-encode video, stream, function as a media player, and record your screen (among other things), how can you not appreciate it?

The interface is easy to use. Right click for more options from changing the sound by applying pre-defined E.Q's, or customize your own and create dedicated profiles. You can boost audio if your videos are too low in default volume. You can slip the audio for delay purposes or re-sync. Filters for video and color adjustment when needed.

It as a whole can be integrated into your production environment. I use it for video productions and streaming. Playback for looping videos. Usage for playlist for music and video as well. Again, this is FREE and has more options than some paid apps./software.

Your ROI will be immediate!

You can use it with NDI which IS HUGE! This can be your little Swiss Army Knife if you want it to be. Or your best kept secret, sort of. It's been around for more than a hot minute so it's not such a secret.

I personally have never had a real issue with it. I've never had to contact support for anything and I am pretty sure you won't either. They release updates on the regular and ultimately using it for newbies makes it even easier for anyone needing to go thru onboarding, is EASY!

Overall for me this is a 10 out of 10!

AI (A.I.) Intelligence, is not needed for this software (IMO) in my opinion.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

The interface hasn’t changed much. I wish they would move to a newer version with a more click-based, polished design that makes it easier to access all the buried features. It would also be nice to have the option to use the Wizard interface instead of always relying on the traditional one, etc.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I’m a PC-based user with knowledge of Linux and SGI, and I’m also a regular user of Mac and Windows. On the PC side, I use this for screen recording, tutorials, basic slide shows, and teaching videos, including editing split-screen, media-related content for publishing materials that support teaching, as well as new and continuing education needs. In a pinch, I also use it to play looping montages on an Android-based media player. I sometimes use it to encode and re-encode video clips, as well as entire edits, and I’ve used it for streaming needs too—media, video, music, etc. It’s not the most “sexy” choice, but it works, works well, and it’s reliable. Not to mention, it also links with NDI Tools for video productions.

  ### 3. Simple, Reliable, and Format Friendly, VLC Simply Gets the Job Done

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ishan S. | Manager and Dietician at Chaitanya Homoeo Clinic, Medical Store Owner, Content Creator, Hospital & Health Care, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 30, 2026

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

I work as a Dietician and Nutritionist, manage a homeopathy clinic, and also prepare health education and guidance material for patients and students. Along with my professional work, I also use a media player regularly for normal day-to-day purposes like watching videos, listening to audio files, and learning content. For both work and personal use, VideoLAN has been my most preferred media player for a long time.
What I like best about VideoLAN is its simplicity. It is one of the easiest and most user friendly media players I have used. There is no learning curve involved. Even someone with very basic computer knowledge can start using it without any difficulty. I can just open a file and it starts playing, which makes it very convenient for everyday use.

In my professional routine, I often need to watch nutrition-related educational videos, recorded training sessions, webinars, health awareness material, and patient guidance videos. VLC handles all these files smoothly without any issues. At the same time, for normal personal use, I use VLC to watch movies, short videos, and listen to music. It works equally well in both situations.
One of the biggest advantages of VLC is that it supports almost all video and audio formats. I rarely face situations where a file does not open. This saves a lot of time because I do not need to convert files or install additional codecs. This is especially helpful when working with different types of educational and downloaded content.

VLC is also very stable and lightweight. It runs smoothly even on systems with average specifications. I have never experienced frequent crashes or serious performance issues. Whether I am using it during busy clinic hours or casually at home, it performs consistently and reliably.
Ease of implementation is another reason why I like VLC so much. The installation process is very simple and quick. There are no complicated steps or unnecessary permissions. I can install it on multiple systems without any trouble, and it works the same way everywhere. This makes it easy to use across different devices.

VLC also offers a good number of useful features that I actually use. Features like playback speed control are very helpful when reviewing long educational or training videos. Subtitle support makes it easier to understand content clearly. Playlist options and basic audio controls are useful for regular media consumption.

Another thing I appreciate is how well VLC fits into my daily workflow. It works perfectly with local files, external storage devices, and downloaded media. It does not depend on internet connectivity, which is very useful when accessing offline content.
Frequency of use is also an important point. VLC is the media player I use most often. Whether it is for professional learning, patient education material, or normal entertainment, VLC is usually my first choice because it is dependable and easy to use.

Even though VLC is completely free, it does not feel like a low-quality or limited tool. It is regularly updated and well maintained. Customer support is mostly community-based, but I find that solutions to common problems are easily available online, which works well for me.
Overall, VideoLAN (VLC Media Player) is the most easy, reliable, and practical media player I have used. It works well for both professional tasks and normal everyday use. It is simple, free, feature-rich, and dependable. Because of its ease of use, wide format support, and consistent performance, VLC continues to be the media player I trust and use the most.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

One thing I dislike about VideoLAN is that its interface feels outdated compared to many modern media players. While it is functional and reliable, the overall design looks basic and could be more visually polished. For new users, some options are not very easy to find at first.
Another limitation is that many advanced features are hidden inside menus. VLC offers a lot of powerful options, but they are not always clearly explained. This means that if someone wants to use more advanced settings, they may need to search online or spend time exploring the menus.

I also feel that VLC is mainly focused on playback and does not offer much beyond that. For example, if someone expects basic editing, trimming, or advanced media management features, VLC is not the right tool. It works best as a player, but its scope is limited in that sense.
Subtitle handling, while useful, can sometimes be inconsistent. Adjusting subtitles or syncing them manually may take extra effort, especially when working with different video sources. This can be slightly inconvenient during regular use.

Another small issue is that VLC does not integrate deeply with cloud services. If media files are stored in cloud platforms, accessing them directly through VLC is not always smooth. This makes it more suitable for local or offline content rather than cloud-based workflows.
Customer support is mostly community-driven. While there is a lot of help available online, there is no dedicated support system for quick assistance. For users who prefer direct support, this can be a limitation.

Overall, these are not major problems, but small practical limitations. VLC remains a very reliable and easy-to-use media player, but improvements in interface design, feature visibility, and modern integrations could make the experience even better.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VideoLAN mainly solves the problem of handling different types of media files without complications. In everyday use, it is common to face issues where a video or audio file does not open properly or requires additional software. VLC removes this problem by supporting a wide range of formats, which allows me to open and play files without worrying about compatibility.

In both my professional and personal routine, I often work with downloaded videos, recorded sessions, educational material, and normal entertainment content. VLC makes this easy because it works consistently across different file types. I do not need to spend time troubleshooting or converting files, which saves effort and keeps work uninterrupted.

Another problem VLC solves is reliability. Some media players can crash, lag, or behave unpredictably, especially on systems with average specifications. VLC runs smoothly and remains stable even during long playback sessions. This reliability is useful when watching long educational videos or recorded material where interruptions can be frustrating.
VLC also helps solve the problem of unnecessary complexity. Many media players include extra features that are rarely used and make the software feel heavy. VLC focuses on core playback functionality and keeps things simple. This makes it easier to use on a daily basis without distractions or confusion.

For offline use, VLC is especially helpful. It does not depend on internet connectivity, which allows me to access and play locally stored content at any time. This is useful when working with downloaded learning material or personal media, without relying on network availability.
Another practical problem VLC addresses is time management during media review. Features like playback speed control allow me to review long videos more efficiently. This is helpful when revisiting recorded sessions or educational content without spending unnecessary extra time.
VLC also solves the problem of cost. It provides all essential media playback features completely free of charge. This is beneficial because I can rely on a high-quality tool without needing a paid subscription or license. Despite being free, it performs consistently well for everyday needs.

Ease of installation is another benefit. VLC can be installed quickly without complex steps, and it works the same way across different systems. This reduces setup time and makes it easy to use on multiple devices.
Overall, VideoLAN benefits me by offering a dependable and simple solution for media playback. It reduces technical issues, saves time, avoids extra costs, and provides a smooth experience for both professional and normal use. Because it consistently handles media files without complications, VLC remains a tool I trust and continue to use regularly.

  ### 4. It is an amazing video app,I just loved it

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Akash S. | Content Writer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2022

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

VLC is more than a video player. It has additional features. I prefer VLC for screen recording without a watermark. Unlike other screen recorders, it does not use a lot of CPU or memory when recording the desktop screen. As a video content developer, I convert videos into several file formats. VLC is the only one that plays all file format video files without trouble and the need for an additional codec. It features a screenshot option, which I use to create thumbnails.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

When a new update arrives, the screenshot feature sometimes switches off and crashes vlc when taking screenshots, but this can be rectified by updating to a more recent version; otherwise, there is no problem with it.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Clients submit films for social media in various formats, including. mov,.mp4, HEIC and others; we need to watch them before publishing, and VideoLAN plays everything flawlessly.

  ### 5. Simple, Fast, and Plays Nearly Any Format

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Javier F. | Business English Teacher, Education Management, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 22, 2026

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

VLC is extremely easy to use and plays almost any media format without needing additional codecs. I like its simplicity, fast performance, and the fact that it works smoothly even on low-resource systems.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

The interface feels a bit outdated, and some advanced features are not very intuitive to find. It’s great for basic use, but less polished compared to newer media players.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VLC solves the problem of incompatible media formats by playing almost any file instantly without extra setup. This saves time and avoids the need to install multiple codecs or players, making media playback simple and reliable.

  ### 6. Versatile Media Player with Excellent Codec SupportSure! Here’s a revised version of the review with a title you can keep or change as you like: *Title:* _Why VLC Gets a 9/10 from Me_ On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give VideoLAN (VLC) a *9*. It’s free, open‑source, and runs smoothly on virtually every platform—Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The wide codec support means I rarely need extra software to play a file, and there are no ads or hidden fees. The only reason it doesn’t get a perfect 10 is the occasional UI roughness on mobile and a few niche subtitle‑rendering quirks, but overall it’s a reliable, versatile media player I can wholeheartedly recommend.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

I consider VideoLan the best software for playing media due to its ability to improve video playback such that all videos on my PC work well. One of the standout features I appreciate is the variety of functions and tools available, which enhance the video playing experience significantly. The software allows for easy adjustments like slowing down or speeding up video playback, making the viewing experience personalized and enjoyable. The 100% natural zooming feature is another aspect I find particularly useful, providing more control over video playback. VideoLan also improves video quality, enhancing it to HD levels, which is perfect for watching movies and videos in the best possible quality. Overall, I find this tool very effective in its job as it ensures all video content plays smoothly and with good picture quality on my PC.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

VideoLAN (VLC) faces several areas where improvement is needed: 1. The desktop version's interface is classic, but the mobile app should align with modern design principles, offering features like dark mode and improved navigation. 2. Subtitle rendering for complex scripts like Urdu and Hindi requires better text-shaping and font fallback. 3. Hardware acceleration on ARM-based devices needs stabilization to enhance performance and battery life. 4. The streaming UI can be enhanced with features making URL additions simpler for casual users. 5. Accessibility could be improved with better screen-reader support and platform-specific keyboard shortcuts. 6. Playlist management needs cross-platform sync and advanced tagging features. 7. Performance on low-end devices could benefit from a minimalist mode. Addressing these issues will enhance technical and user experience aspects, making VLC more polished overall.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use VideoLan for its reliable video playback, providing HD quality and versatile functions like speed control and zooming, making it ideal for watching movies and videos.

  ### 7. VLC Media Player: solid, reliable, and versatile.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul B. | Customer Experience Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 02, 2025

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

VLC was my main video player for years because it handles just about any format I throw at it. Playback is smooth and reliable, and I always appreciated the straightforward interface and the fact that it’s free and open source. Features like subtitle support, streaming, and customization options make it a great all-rounder for any media collection.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

While VLC works well, I eventually switched to Daum PotPlayer for a more refined user experience. The app interface could be improved, with slicker controls and easier access to advanced options. Sometimes navigating settings can be a bit difficult.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VLC helped me enjoy media without dealing with compatibility issues or format headaches. For straightforward, free video playback and basic streaming, it just gets the job done and I still recommend it as a reliable choice.

  ### 8. Immense Codec Support—Plays Almost Any Video File with Ease

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vinit J. | Global Shaper, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 21, 2026

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

The video codecs that Video LAN supports are immense, I can play almost any video file and open stream using this software

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

The ease of adding an IPTV and open stream is a bit difficult and can be improved

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ease of using multiple formats of video and audio files in a single player across all OS systems is something that’s unreal with unique settings to boost audio quality and subtitle selection through the internet

  ### 9. A must have open-source video/audio player

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Avinash S. | Infrastructure Support Analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 05, 2025

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

I have been using VideoLan since a really long time - early days of 2007. I have it installed on all my machines, be it for personal use and even for my professional work as well as it doesn't eats us all the available memory (RAM) like the new video player and takes only necessary GPU in use. This makes it more effective and efficient on day-to-day daily operations.

It has some of the essential and most useful options like take a snapshot while playing any video, you can play a specific part of audio or video on loop that is very very useful while you are preparing some dance steps (LOL) though these may sound very common options but at times these are very helpful.

Not just that, well VideoLan has supportability to almost all video and audio formats that makes it perfect. I use it almost every other day to play my music and video as it is set to default player and recently, I have played a 60+GB of video file (Original 8k resolution Marvel edit) and it was played flawless which shook me as it took hardly 2-3seconds.

Most importantly they keep on improving since 2007 and have continuous releases dropping which makes reliable; though if you face any major issues then you can easily uninstall and install it again, hardly takes 10mins. VideoLan is available for almost all major GUI based operating system.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

I would like to have an option where I can search directly on web for suitable subtitle. Tough it hardly makes any difference as I can also do it myself though it would add some utility on Windows platform.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is helping me to eliminate the use of laggy, full of advertisement and performance intensive video/audio player. It is very convenient to install on most of the platforms and as it takes only necessary memory for graphic processing it never gets any of my machine to "Not responding" state. I can set any aspect ratio through a very common shortcut "C Key".
And I do not have to bear load of subscription or hefty cost of software/application, and it supports both audio and video which is superb for me as I do not have to install separate software/application.

The user interface could be improved; the current one isn’t very attractive or engaging.

  ### 24. 14+ Years of using VLC - Still the best open source Media Player!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Peter John P. | Executive Assistant to Chief Operations Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2023

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

VLC has always been my choice for a reliable, no-frills open source media player for over 14+ years now. The main draw to VLC even from the start is its compatibility to a very wide range of media formats. I started using VLC at a time when WMP was still the default player for almost all my peers. It always bugged me that I needed to have a codec installed to it when I try to play some video file or movie that comes in a not-so-common format. VLC didn't have that issue -- it's so good that you can even use it to transcode videos!

I want to give a special mention to the ability to boost the volume on videos. It is a killer feature way back when all we had were small netbooks with puny speakers, the volume boost was the only way everyone could hear the videos.

It's been 14 years, but I still find a use for VLC, even at work. We use it to distribute instructional vids for clients and new team members for onboarding or product demos. We can download vids from youtube (with no captions), and create an SRT file for it, for our non-english speakers clients and colleagues, and have them insert them on VLC to be incorporated in the video. To more years to come, VLC. Thank you

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

Some people would probably point out that VLC has an outdated design, and that is true, but I personally think that it adds to the appeal of VLC. It is something that WORKS, no extra eye-candy needed.

VLC being open source also means you don't get to have a dedicated team to iron out some issues for you, but there's always an active community that is ready to help. You just have to spend time on forums.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Wide compatibility for Media Playback, Transcoding Capabilities. Free and reliable media player that stood the test of time.

**Reviewed by:** Shiv S. | Head of Sales, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2023

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

VideoLan is one of the best video players now available to the community and one of the few successful players. The fact that it is open source and has enormous potential to play any video in any format is the finest thing about it. I also used this fantastic application to take pictures or take stills from the videos I play. If you look into the settings, this application also provides comprehensive controls and shortcut modification choices. Whether installed on a computer, a mobile device, a Mac, or a Windows computer, this takes up incredibly little space. Additionally, it plays practically all of your films and loads rapidly.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

Only a tiny number of codecs are not supported by VLC Player. Therefore, in those circumstances, you could need to make another choice. I only found one instance involving one of the popular companies DVR(Digital Video Recorder), where VLc had not played back H.264 recordings. While this isn't the end, VLC should also offer ways to link with Icecast and Shoutcast servers easily, which can benefit the broadcasting sector more.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not only on Home Television and Personal Laptops, but we are transmitting our films and audio to a broader audience thanks to Video Lan's ultra stream capability, which enables real-time playback on the system. I urge the broadcasting industry, especially CRS(Community Radio Stations), to utilize and explore this incredible technology.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VideoLan is the best player to watch movies and other videos especially the videos which we edit in video editing tools since VLC gives the best visual experience of the video quality.

  ### 43. Overall Phenomenal player

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ashwini K. | Network Administrator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 05, 2023

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

Beautiful. The best video player available on the Play Store. Just add the option to turn off the mp3 detection so that people have the choice to decide whether they want to use it for videos or for both music & videos.

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

I have a massive collection of offline songs, which increases the size of the app up to 1 GB, which is quite high, in my opinion, since the option to turn off song detection/scanning is not provided. Due to this, the app becomes quite heavier.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Nice app. The only app I used for as long as I can remember but there is a lot to improve. The most annoying thing is when u r watching a movie with subtitles and turn your screen ratio to match the screen ratio (fit screen), then subtitles won't shift upward and you can't see them. I think this is a fundamental kind of system that should have been corrected years ago, looking at VLC's popularity. Still best out there for me.

  ### 44. VideoLan is the best choice for Video Playback

When the media file is too large, then the VideoLan player takes some time to load the media. Also, the mobile version of this software is not as feature-rich as the desktop version.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VideoLan supports subtitle files for captions in videos which helps me to understand the foreign languages in the video. I can also synchronize the audio or subtitle track.

This compatibility has made it a go-to media player for millions of users around the world.

Media Playback Quality: VLC media player offers exceptional media playback quality. It supports a broad range of video resolutions and aspect ratios, including HD and 4K playback. It also includes a set of playback controls that allow users to adjust playback speed, volume, and subtitles to enhance their viewing experience.

Resource Intensive Playback: VLC media player can play high-quality video files that are resource-intensive. By using various playback optimizations, it can still deliver a seamless playback experience without sacrificing the quality of the media.

Media Management: Although VLC media player is primarily designed for playback, it also offers several media management capabilities, including streaming, recording, and media conversion. This helps users to manage and organize their media files without having to use multiple applications.

Open-Source and Free: VLC media player is free to use and open-source, making it accessible to everyone. This means that users can access a high-quality media player without having to pay for expensive software licenses or subscriptions.

Overall, VideoLAN's VLC media player is solving several problems for me, including compatibility issues, media playback quality, resource-intensive playback, media management, and accessibility. Its benefits are extensive, and it has become one of the most popular media players in the world, with millions of users benefiting from its features every day.

**Reviewed Date:** June 28, 2023

**What do you like best about VideoLan?**

I appreciate the functionality and versatility of VLC. Its ability to play multiple media files and support various streaming protocols is indeed commendable, as it offers more possibilities than QuickTime on Mac OS

**What do you dislike about VideoLan?**

I find that the user interface could be improved on the Windows system, but it caught up on Mac OS. The design looks outdated and lacks a modern touch, which can be off-putting to users expecting a more visually appealing experience. Also, occasional glitches and compatibility issues with specific file formats have been a source of frustration for me. While VLC is undeniably valuable as a free and open-source media player, there are areas where it could benefit from further development to improve the overall user experience.

**What problems is VideoLan solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can play all video formats without worrying; it does Quicktime better on Mac OS

Its user interface design for appearing dated or lacking modern aesthetics. The interface could be seen as utilitarian rather than visually appealing. Its interface can be improved a lot.
