One of VLC's biggest strengths is its unparalleled compatibility with a wide range of audio and video formats. VLC has always been my choice for a reliable, no-frills open source media player for over 14+ years now. The main draw to VLC even from the start is its compatibility to a very wide range of media formats. I started using VLC at a time when WMP was still the default player for almost all my peers. It always bugged me that I needed to have a codec installed to it when I try to play some video file or movie that comes in a not-so-common format. VLC didn't have that issue -- it's so good that you can even use it to transcode videos!
I want to give a special mention to the ability to boost the volume on videos. It is a killer feature way back when all we had were small netbooks with puny speakers, the volume boost was the only way everyone could hear the videos.
It's been 14 years, but I still find a use for VLC, even at work. We use it to distribute instructional vids for clients and new team members for onboarding or product demos. We can download vids from youtube (with no captions), and create an SRT file for it, for our non-english speakers clients and colleagues, and have them insert them on VLC to be incorporated in the video. To more years to come, VLC. Thank you Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Some people would probably point out that VLC has an outdated design, and that is true, but I personally think that it adds to the appeal of VLC. It is something that WORKS, no extra eye-candy needed.
VLC being open source also means you don't get to have a dedicated team to iron out some issues for you, but there's always an active community that is ready to help. You just have to spend time on forums. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I use this product when working with various media file types. Whether that be for an animated logo or video that we are internally making for the company or a client is wanting us to post media for their upcoming event but they have given a uncommon file type. All formats of videos and audios can be played on it, and it has multiple options to improve the user experience, including playback speed, subtitles, changing the timings of subtitles, and a lot of shortcuts which are customizable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
In some case, the subtitles are not read properly and not synced if the video is not mp4. It takes some effort to change the subtitles time to align them Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
