The loading times have also been very reasonable. The bare metal restores allowed us to get our servers reset fairly quickly so that a recovery could begin. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Configuring what exactly you want to back up can be a little complicated in case you need to back up multiple directories on different schedules. Unitrends support is very helpful in sorting that out though. Getting the bare metal recoveries loaded on to the actual server took a bit to configure as we kept running in to issues with it not recognizing our gateway. It was hit or miss for some time but as soon as we were able to get it started it was quick to run. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** Take your time with understanding Unitrends and the different parts of Backup and Recovery as it can be overwhelming at first. But once you get it configured and understand it more it is very easy to navigate and add additional backups and recover lost data. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our entire network was hit with a Ransomware attack and al of our servers were compromised. Unitrends has allowed us to get everything back online in a timely fashion. Without having our servers backed up and able to recover them through Unitrends our system would be in a lot of trouble. The support at Unitrends has also been very fast to respond with any questions I might have about recovering individual servers as well as any questions about the restored data itself. ### 2. Their sales cycles "acct mgrs" are ruthless to get companies signed up; then relegate and drop you to "other" depts from the moment signed on. They only care about getting the biggest appliance size as financially possible regardless of performance and or availability. We moved from a traditional tape / media to an appliance-based use; and regretted the "sales cycle" from almost the first moment; when we ran into issues... They went thru sales acct mgrs like water thru a sive... We returned the appliance; they claim they never received it; kept billing us... They back up everything they are intended to back up. The file restoration works fairly simply. Support is really helpful when you have issues. It may take some time to get things rolling with support, but once they're on the issue, they're fairly quick at resolving the problems. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Once Kaseya bought Unitrends, the support renewal process went to heck in a hand basket. The need to get support to help with one click upgrades because something goes wrong is a hassle. Database backups are currently the only option for MS exchange. It is now HTML5, where before it was Flash-based. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Pretty much everything. You can't restore a single VMDK for a VM. You have to restore the whole thing. Software upgrades seem to make the product worse and worse. Slow to adopt newer version of Microsoft SQL. A colleague of mine used Unitrends and a couple times they lost HR data because of a stuck cleanup process. The appliance never showed any kind of issue or sent any kind of alert or message. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** Don't buy. Unitrends just doesn't seem to adapt very quickly. Their support is really good. They're easy to get ahold of and they stay with you through the problem. Drive failures seem kind of frequent. We purchased two appliances, one for on premise and one for offsite because we didn't have offsite but we knew that had to change. Backup and recovery of physical or virtual environment or both together. Love the fact that while backups have failed from time to time but never had a recovery fail and isn't what this is really about! **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Physical appliance costs, the UI, which was flash-based (since moved to HTML5), and an architectural design with backend API and front-end web server passing commands. They use many open source components, and while not a security risk, they often show up as such when scanned, with vulnerability scanners like Nexpose. The flaw is not exploitable as deployed, so there is no need to fix it. Of course, waiting for the open-source community to address the problem despite it not being exploitable (Unitrends) is not the most reassuring feeling. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** Look at the physical appliances only if you need something to exist off main storage arrays. There are other ways to achieve this same goal, but that is the primary reason to look, otherwise stick to virtual appliance options. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is backup and recovery, so the problem solved is not losing critical data despite the actions of users, other causes of mayhem, or god. While it is helpful that other services allow targeted backup, it is nice to have it all under one roof and available for them to help monitor. I also like that Unitrends Cloud allows the support for a legacy system that we are running that is from the 90's. Their support for backing up legacy systems is unmatched and profundly appereciated. We also have a line directly to the Unitrends Support in the event that we run in to advanced issues and need further assistance troubleshooting. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** It is frustrating that we have to call support to remove items from the Unitrends Cloud. When we remove a server, we have to reach out to support to remove it from the cloud storage because you do not directly access the cloud appliance they supply. While support is helpful and pretty fast, it would be beneficial for individuals to manage their own cloud target. We also find it difficult at times that there can be limitations to the system with speed and backup. While our appliance has a 10GbE port on it, we find that there are still some speed issues at times with landing backups. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** Unitrends Backup and Recovery is an expensive but inclusive solution. It offers several flexible options, and you can pay for different tiers depending on what you need for your level and speed of recovery. Support is good and is willing to work with each company to help meet the needs of your backup and recovery goals and is friendly and easy to work with. The implementation time is quite a bit and takes a fair amount of hand-holding from the support team, but if you are patient with the process you will have no trouble getting through it. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Unitrends Cloud allows us to back up our systems online confidently, and we know that when disaster strikes we can be confident that their product will have us covered when we need it. We have conducted DRaaS tests, and we know that we can initiate a recovery with a simple phone call as soon as we need it and it is ready to use at a moment's notice. In addition to general features, utalizing the Unitrends Cloud we are able to do live DR testing. The second thing we like the most is the ability to mount an image for browsing and reviewing the data as an SMB share. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** We dislike the scheduling system, selecting of the files, and a lot of the user interface. In addition, the drivers often fail, requiring reboots to fix. While the systems often work, many times SQL breaks and reboots don't fix it. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** I believe there are better services available. But think about it. Unitrends charges for an appliance that will provide protection for a specific amount of data. An example: If I have 10 TB of data to backup that is my protected data size. We chose to provide our appliances, two HP DL380 G10s, one as a primary and one as a backup at an offsite location. Setup was incredibly easy. We had the systems installed in a redundant configuration within one week, backing up over 100 VMs. Bare metal restores work incredibly well. Our systems were compromised twice since deploying Unitrends, and recovery was effortless. The Unitrends interface shows in quick detail the status of your overall backup scheme. Should you need more detail, you can quickly select one link and it will show you backups for all systems across your primary and backup servers. We routinely are contacted by other backup vendors and have no need to entertain them. Unitrends pricing is right and their support is unmatched in the industry.
