With a Unitrends backup appliance, you can protect workstations across your network or just in a specific VLAN. The solution works with VMware and offers more flexibility compared to other offerings. Backing up using incremental changes, makes backups faster and easier to manage. The appliance is a self contained unit, no additional servers are required and no exernal storage is needed. Send backups to AWS or Azure quickly and spin up the restoration just as fast. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** There is not much to dislike. Simply install the agent on a workstation, configure the back appliance and backups starts! Its a very seamless system. The appliance does require administration, monitoring, and testing. The Unitrends appliance performs incremental backups of the data and OS on these workstations. This gives us peace of mind knowing that the data is backed up. The overhead of the client is extremely minimal and takes little in resources OR drive space. Excellent management interface on the local server as well. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Single file recovery is a little bit hokey and could be better laid out - it takes way too many steps to navigate/drill down the file you are looking for through the web interface. Less than clear on how to rename the SMB share as well as account credentials for access to it so that you can grab the local client installer from the backup server. Updates are crazy frequent. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Simultaneously provides on-site backup, encrypted off-site backup, as well as hot *AND* warm storage/DRaaS - they can spin up a VM from a backup of your physical server and transparently (and securely!) deploy the VM in their cloud with IP pass-through to your on-prem network if a server fails so that systems never even need to be adjusted to talk to the backup. Very simply put, it works. The restore process is not overly difficult and backup times are not bad. We backup 5 physical and 4 virtual servers using both file and image level backups. We have had to make recoveries many times due to human error. When you need it, the product is there and works. I also very much enjoy the ability to spin up restorals in the cloud in the event that we had a catastrophic event in the office. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Some of the interfaces and naming procedures could be made to read more clearly. Instruction sets should be provided on the interface rather then web forums. This is a relatively easy change with some background changes and a UI refresh, so its not that big of a deal. The alerting capacities were also fairly robust. This caused incomplete backup chains that invalidated later incremental backups. I hardly ever have to make adjustments. It just does what it should on it's own. Backups I have had in the past needed constant checking and adjusting. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Nothing so far. The only somewhat negative experience I have had was with a call to customer support where technician was not listening to me. I told him it was off the network; he just kept repeatedly asking me to help him connect to the device. It was an IP address issue. The other local technician that was changing the entire network schema forgot to change the Unitrends device. It would not change the IP remotely. Backs up Hyper-V, Exchange, SQL, VMWare, and others out of the box without extra add-on subscriptions. Hyper-V and Exchange recoveries have saved my bacon a few times over the last several years I've been using Unitrends' Recovery Appliance products. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Dealing with VSS, especially with Hyper-V, can be a bother. I swear, sometimes it fails to give me something to do. Unitrends provides best practices to ensure minimal challenges due to VSS. Every few months I find myself opening a support ticket to repair stuck Unitrends Cloud backup copy jobs. Each time I open a ticket and they clean it up, but it would be nice to have one less thing to do. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** We're a very small organization who is just now moving to M365 from on-prem Exchange. We backup physical and virtual servers, many generations of Windows as well as Linux and others. Backups occur locally at night and then get pushed to an offsite appliance over night and then critical servers spin off onto tape during the day (as to not effect production). **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Agent installs for hyper-v require reboots. I understand why but getting the downtime to do reboots is difficult in our environment. We try to patch the servers and get these agents installed at the same maintenance window. Last update 10.6.7 disabled backups due to a glitch in the release, the new release fixed the issue, however. **Recommendations to others considering Unitrends Backup and Recovery:** Get bigger model than you size for. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Enterprise backup, replication and off-site tape backup are handled. I could put some old NAS boxes I had to good use. I also like the scheduling flexibility. In my case, it worked very well. I am currently using it to back up VM desktop disk files. This is an update, and I am continuing to use it. I've outgrown the old NAS boxes, LOL and I'm in the process of getting some more starge. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** It's not easy to figure out the errors. The management page can be a bit vague at times. I wish it were a bit more intuitive, I guess. But hardly any backup software is intuitive. After using it for a while you start to firgure it out better. Each has its advantage and disadvantages. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** In a nutshell, the only two major issues that have been found so far are with backup log. 1) The backup log reports false reporting of volumes not backed up over NDMP because it can only do Node backups, but it will see the volume on the opposing node. 2) Issue found you can't seem to be able to backup templates even though they can be selected as per above, I wish unitrends had an exclusion list for its reporting so it would give a clean report. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Allows for NDMP baackups of our NetApp and also backups Physical and Virtual host and supports multiple client types. ### 28. Replication to the DRaaS site for DR. The ability to clear logs for Exchange and SQL databases. The concept of being able to restore on the appliance if needed. All of these when they are working. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Management does not respond even when explicitly asked to respond; I suspect they feel that the engineer is communicating with us. Never any proactive communication. It seems they do not care that you have not had any backups on primary servers for days or that jobs have not replicated to the cloud in days. I understand there will be issues, but it would be nice if management would acknowledge these are critical issues instead of just not replying to emails they are supposedly following. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our tape backups appear to be unusable for any large backup. Management has provided us with a great cloud solution at no cost, providing us with the necessary restoration points we require. When it is set up in their helpdesk's recommended way it is generally stable. (Vmware appliance, all backup storage mounted as a datastore, virtual disks attached to appliance.) Note:this review is for the virtual appliance and not their hardware appliance **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** Not all of the advertised features will work and be stable. Test needed features in a POC before buying. For example, your backup storage can be CIFS/NFS based instead of being a vmdk on a datastore. CIFS wouldn't connect out of the box. NFS connected once but failed to store backups. Phone support recommended avoiding this configuration. The appliance can be set up to backup to wasabi storage. Unfortunately, ours marks this storage as unavailable/offline multiple times a month. Note:This review is for the virtual appliance and not their hardware appliance **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Unitrends is currently backing up our vmware environment. Restores are smooth, and the phone support team is very helpful if you run into snags restoring vms. The instant recovery feature has saved a few hours of downtime. It allows the vm to be mounted and started while still on the backup storage. The vm can then be vmotioned off of the backup storage to your main storage. ### 36. Also everytime they release a big upgrade, it becomes challenging to navigate the site admin console and it takes time to find the features that I am looking for. Yes, hardware does fail after many years, but it can be replaced without any downtime. The most important part of Unitrends backup solution for our company is the fact that they have tear agent-level support, which is, by far the most experienced tech support that I have ever dealt with. They really do know their way around Linux to support our companys needs with precise knowledge to get our issues resolved. This is why i convinced our management team to stay with Unitrends and upgrade to their newest hardware they have to offer. I can't say enough about this product other than the fact it is a rock-solid solution that meets our needs. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** The only thing that i can say negative about Unitrends, is that it uses Kroll (third party application) to recover email. It isnt terrible and it does work, but wish it was more intergrated into the Untirends recovery platform. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our company still uses backup tapes. This is a huge benefit that Unitrends has for us, since we store five years of archives per company policies. Support: Probably the best in the industry, they know their stuff, and their T3 support gets an extra shoutout from me, because they are the only reason my reviews aren't a string of complaints. Backups: I'd only use this for File Servers or SQL. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** VMWare Backups: VMWare is passable, but filtering features are broken to the point where auto-adding content between multiple data centers is impossible. Hyper-V Backups: Hyper-V is broken at best, if you have any Hyper-V in your environment, look elsewhere, this will not do what you need it to do. With Hyper-V, you can backup and recover, but it won't keep your settings (like cpu count and type, or network settings). Instant Recovery: Instant recovery is a feature they offer, but if you need to do instant recovery on more than one server, it won't work in any functional way. A single VM took 45 minutes to be accessible; This is largely due to the use of spinning 7200RPM SATA disks instead of something faster, like SSD (and for the price of their appliance, SSD should be the standard). I have some nit-picking, but I'll only point out one: Reporting is robust and because of that I expect a lot from it, but the one report I want isn't possible. When I've added a large quantity of servers and VM hosts for protection, I'd like it to let me know which of those, aren't part of a backup job. It does an inventory sync, and it knows this information, but I can't extract it. It would be great to have a report that says, "hey, these servers have been added to the appliance, but they aren't currently being backed up". We are still in a contract with Unitrends, but our appliances sit mostly unused and we have gone back to the backup appliance that we intended to replace with Unitrends (Microsoft DPM). Outside of the nice interface of Unitrends, the experience is largely the same. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** At this point in time, we're only using it for a single file server, and a handful of SQL servers. We are actively migrating SQL off right now, and we'll move our file servers to azure in the near future. Within 3 months I expect we'll be off the Unitrends appliance, even though we still have 3 years left on our contract; we tried negotiating out of it, but they wouldn't budge. **Official Response from Adam Marget:** > Hello there!
