Many Basic Features Locked Behind Paid Add-Ons in The Events Calendar **Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Faydra D. | Full-time Freelancer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** May 10, 2026 **What do you like best about The Events Calendar?** I have cut my teeth on The Events Calendar plugin using it on a client's website who needed a lot of what the plugin offers, but they also do not need a lot of what the plugin offers. The upside of The Events Calendar plugin is that, with some of its addons, it is a real event management system that includes everything you need when you want to show events on your WordPress site. **What do you dislike about The Events Calendar?** The main downside of The Events Calendar plugin is that what I consider basic functionality isn’t available unless you pay for their add-ons. Features like recurring events, a weekly list view, calendar shortcodes, custom event fields, basic front-end filtering, venue/organizer pages, the ability to duplicate events and searching by location aren’t included unless you upgrade and pay. Without those things, it doesn’t feel like a complete events management system. **What problems is The Events Calendar solving and how is that benefiting you?** The Events Calendar gives my client a structured way to manage events without trying to force regular WordPress posts or pages to act like a calendar. Instead of manually creating event pages, sorting them by date, repeating venue details and trying to keep everything consistent, they get a dedicated Events area with fields for date, time, venue, organizer, categories and event details. That makes it much easier for them to add and update events without needing a custom setup every time. The biggest benefit is that it keeps event information organized and predictable for both the client and their members. Members can go to one place to see upcoming events in a calendar or list view, and since the client pays for some of the pro addons they have a system for recurring events, RSVPs, tickets, filtering and event imports. ### 2. There are still some enhancements it could make, but it is the best one I could find. **What do you dislike about The Events Calendar?** The ability to create recurring events requires a paid membership. I work with non-profits and having a little bit more of a robust free option would be nice.
