What do you like best about Terminalfour?

The system allows a lot of flexibility in the way web pages are constructed. The interface allows large websites to be easily created and managed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

The system is not so good for managing events or a large number of news items or events. Tagging content like you would in a WordPress blog is possible but difficult. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using T4 to incorporate information from external sources to enable content for our course pages to be published. This gives us the flexibility we need to reduce the manual work need to edit the content. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

I love Terminalfour as a CMS. The product allows for custom code, system-wide consistency features, including mirroring content, and navigation objects to bring content from one area of the site to the other. User groups and permissions are easily manageable. Section and content links allow the system to warn you about broken links when deleting content, and the system shows you where the links are. There are many other very useful features within T4. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

Some of our pain points are we wish we could customize workflow emails a bit more to include more information about what content needs to be reviewed and add in other useful information. We would love to see this added in the future. It would also be helpful to be able to exclude sections within a branch that users have access to. The permissions are inherited by down the branch, which in most cases, is fine but there are always those special cases where it would be nice. Also, It would be awesome if we could set up review dates for entire sections vs each piece of content. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

We moved from WrodPress and T4 helps us with consistency and stale content by assiginig content to users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

There are many positive assets of using T4. For one, their support team is great and provides a direct line to them for submitting tickets and questions that usually gets answered in a prompt timeline/window. They go above and beyond with their communications in connecting to their clients - be it the support platform, their reps reaching out about new features, newsletters, the documentation site, the communal slack channel, and more. I have never met a more friendly group of people at a company, and that attitude and environment gets translated to their work and relations with clients. The CMS itself is intuitive and provides a variety of assets and functionality to accomplish anything in a website. Content types, page layouts, nav items, and more are all at your disposal to really dive into your designs and make them not only functional for your development team but easy to use for your editors who may not have coding experience. They also make updates incredibly easy - their team takes care of it for you and there is no hassle. T4 provides great reporting features and it is helpful that deleted content can be easily restored without jumping through hoops. We recently went through a website redesign and never entertained the idea of switching CMS's in the process - we knew we loved T4 and all that it offers. Truly the best platform and team to work with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

I would say that more user information and analytics would be helpful and is missing on the platform. For example, seeing the last time someone was logged in, their activities, allowing them to reset passwords themselves (admins need to do this), etc. would be great in bumping up governance efforts for admins.

I would also say perhaps beefing up media library capabilities and management. Where to upload images, pdfs, and all files can be a bit confusing depending on how each client sets up the folders for organization. It would be great if it was a bit more automatic and guided users more clearly. However, this can be both a pro and a con depending on each organization's preferences.

EDIT: Yes, thank you for the response! We did not previously have the Dashboard feature and have since installed it - It is great for showing some of the metrics described above! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

We recently went through a website redesign, overhauling our entire site and T4 helped us with design implementations and integrations - both new and old - with other univerities systems. They have helped us modernize our website and make the overall web experience great for our users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Piero Tintori of Terminalfour

Hi, thank you for the review. We always appreciate hearing from our clients and finding ways to improve our products and services.

Some of what you mention can actually be seen from the Terminalfour dashboard on your platform:https://docs.terminalfour.com/documentation/developer-resources/modules/dashboard-module/

Dashboards are a great way to improve governance and seeing who has access, when content was last edited, etc. There are lots of useful features, and we'd recommend installing the dashboard.

If your institution hasn't yet installed it or if they're not sure how to, please reach out to your Account Manager or our Support team, and they'd be happy to help you with that!

Thanks again for the review!

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

The best thing about TerminalFour is its content-type structure. Drupal's is so much better.

The CMS does work most of the time & doesn't go down frequently.

The response time is fair. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

The CMS's interface is super old-fashioned

The CMS is unintuitive & no one can understand it without extensive training

The CMS has a javascript engine from the 90s, so no modern javascript works in the back end

We tried to get TerminalFour to import content into the database & we had to pay to have someone in India manually add the data. The project got scrapped in the end. Why couldn't they do a database import?

The code editor in the backend is super buggy.

You add a page layout (Template), but there is no way of knowing which content type works with that page layout

It gets messy very quickly

There isn't a way to "View page" like any other CMS

Things are named wrong - delete doesn't delete, publish doesn't publish

The social & email features are decades behind other tools

Exporting reports doesn't work - it just times out

You can't create custom post types or anything of the such, so you end up with hundreds of content types

SEO features don't exist

The sitemap generator doesn't work - we had to build our own

It doesn't support webp images, so you can never get a good google page speed score

The media library is terrible

The search feature doesn't work. You have to know the ID, which, if I knew, I wouldn't be searching

Nothing actually gets deleted, so when we remove a page, it gets marked as inactive in the CMS but the page just lives on forever

The PHP engine only works on the live site - So we need to publish the page to check the PHP worked

There is no in-built search functionality, so we have to pay £15K per year for an external tool

No agencies can work with T4

You can't link out to external pages - You have to create a new section that links out & then link to that section

You can't use "If Not" statements. TerminalFour's own suggestion was to use a super hacky method of commenting & uncommenting code

You have to get used to saying, "T4 doesn't support that kind of thing"

Publishing the site takes 3 hours (No exaggeration)

Documentation is bad

No in-built testing

Can't work locally and push to T4 - You have to work inside the CMS at all times

No repeater fields

It's basically a glorified sign-posting tool. Awkward to use. Worst CMS I've used in my 10 years as a developer. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

It solves the problem of us needing a CMS but because it's so unintuitive, the web-team end up making every edit on behalf of people. Any other CMS does what terminalfour does & usually better. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Piero Tintori of Terminalfour

Dear Ryan,

We’re sorry you feel you’ve had a negative experience with your Terminalfour product.

As your account manager may have discussed with you previously, you’re currently on a very old version of our software (15 versions behind) and haven’t availed of all the training we can offer to make the most of our product. Much of the friction you’re experiencing could be fixed by upgrading to our newest version of Terminalfour.

Our Professional Services team can help with any development you don’t wish to do in-house, and as one of the leading digital engagement and web content management platforms for the higher education sector in the UK, there are many agencies that are very familiar with our Terminalfour solution, and we’d be happy to put you in touch with them.

We’ve messaged you privately and our Support team will be delighted to help upgrade your version of Terminalfour.

Thank you,

The Terminalfour team

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

As a content strategist, I've found it easy to manage and update content with the Terminal Four content management system. I learned the CMS during a one-day training and have found the Knowledge Base helpful for any questions that have come up since training. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

I'm very happy with Terminal Four and only have small quibbles with the CMS. For example, while the company says that editors should be able to copy and paste content from Microsoft Word without retaining formatting, we have found that formatting sometimes stays with the text, which causes issues with how the content displays. Our work-around is to first paste copy into the Notepad app (which strips all formatting and leaves only plain text) and then copy and paste into Terminal Four. It's an extra step but not a big deal. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

We're creating a consistent look and feel for all content on our organization's website. The CMS has helped us create a much cleaner, more up-to-date look for the site. This is especially important during the pandemic, when our customers cannot visit our organization in person and are more likely to turn to the website for information and answers. What do you like best about Terminalfour?

The content management system is mostly used by higher education institutions and the T4 team is very knowledgeable about "our world" and what we are trying to accomplish. The user interface is very intuitive and functionality can be customized to meet an organization's needs. There is a community forum that is very helpful and the learning materials are great. I miss some of the functionality (now use a different CMS at a different organization) like the shared content blocks that allow you to share the same information in multiple places but only have to update it once. The training they provide is customized and very effective. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

Like with any "out of the box" CMS there are sometimes things you cannot customize to exactly meet your needs, but overall I highly recommend it and the TerminalFour team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

Using a content management system to present information on a public website in an intuitive and visually appealing user interface. Also, allowing non-technical editors across the organization to keep their content up to date with some training. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

TERMINALFOUR is a web-based application and is very useful for colleges and universities in managing their current status and promoting the institution for further admissions. This tool is a good planner in making strong strategies to empower the organization with the best policies. The users can capture the benefits of making solid plans and ideas for implementation. The software is very beneficial in allocating the organization with well-reputed institutes. It comprehends all details and guide the visitors to come again for further process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

This application compares the organization and it’s very important to maintain the web page with secured hands. Otherwise, the information can be skipped and it can create problems for the organization. The internet should be of good quality to promote this tool and the users should be aware of everything for installation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

TERMINALFOUR is an excellent application for all types of educational institutions. It doesn’t help to promote our page on social media, but, also provides solid strategies to rank the page on Google. So, our website is referring to our whole organization and everyone can see the page with a single click. The management has not done anything except to install this application in the system and the remaining work is making this tool. So, I must say this software is running a campaign on social forums with great responsibility. Our institution is getting more admissions and we can guide everyone without any trouble. What do you like best about Terminalfour?

Friendly interface and visible directory helps keep everything in view. The analytics screen is very descriptive , it tells you what's up in an instant and transitioning is generally smooth. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

It is a bit expensive, It doesn't offer something to set it apart from the rest. Like a key feature which no one else has. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Terminalfour:

Everything is there, just gotta find it on the screen without worrying. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

It is helping us engage more with our students digitally but we cannot tell if its actually effective because digital traffic isn't necessarily transforming into physical traffic. So we feel it should do more. It is helping us develop an online community for our students and we've been more successful in that ever since terminal four. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Terminalfour?

TerminalFour is relatively straightforward and simple to use. I would consider myself a "light" user of the product (i.e. staff reporting to me have been the main ones updating and publishing content), yet I find it relatively easy to use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Terminalfour?

Occasionally I run across something that is not as intuitive as one might think. I'm a user at a department level, and our primary administrators in MarComm/ITS provide training for university staff. There are some tips and workarounds I remember learning in training that I never would have figured out on my own. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Terminalfour:

For us, it has been a good solution for a complex institution with many different departments and users/administrative staff using the system. I am not sure if it is more complex a tool than necessary for a very small business - but worth considering if that may be the case. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Terminalfour solving and how is that benefiting you?

As a university, it allows MarComm/ITS staff to assign administrative privileges at the department level and have many users in T4 whom are able to update their respective department pages within approved templates. There are checkpoints in place to ensure only approved content is published.
