Who is Square Point of Sale pricing best suited for?

Square Point of Sale's pricing is best suited for small businesses, solo operators, and mobile sellers who need a low-cost, flexible payment solution without monthly commitments. G2 reviewers from retail, food and beverage, hospitality, arts and crafts, photography, and non-profit industries overwhelmingly represent the free tier user base, praising its no-monthly-fee structure. Square Plus suits growing small businesses in food, retail, or appointments that need loyalty programs and marketing tools. Square Premium targets more established businesses requiring 24/7 support and advanced reporting. Mid-market reviewers also appear across G2 reviews of Square Point of Sale, particularly in hospitality and consumer goods, though they occasionally note that transaction fees accumulate at higher sales volumes.

What are the key differences between the free and paid versions of Square Point of Sale?

Square Point of Sale's free tier covers essential POS functionality including payment processing at 2.6% plus 15 cents per tap, dip, or swipe, an item library, invoicing, online store, and booking tools. G2 reviewers note the free tier handles most small business needs well. Square Point of Sale's paid plans unlock meaningful upgrades: Square Plus at $49.00 per month adds industry-specific POS features, a loyalty rewards program, email and text marketing, staff management, and slightly lower processing fees. Square Premium at $149.00 per month further reduces processing fees, adds 24/7 priority support, advanced reporting, expanded text marketing, and eliminates gift card load fees. Reviewers frequently cite paywalled features like marketing and loyalty as the primary upgrade drivers.

Is Square Point of Sale considered good value for its pricing?

Square Point of Sale is broadly considered good value, particularly for small businesses and mobile sellers. G2 reviewers consistently praise the free tier's no-monthly-fee model, noting that paying only per transaction is ideal for low-volume or seasonal businesses. High ratings from small business owners in retail, food and beverage, arts, and hospitality reflect strong satisfaction despite frequent complaints about transaction fees being slightly high. Reviewers who gave five-star ratings while citing fee concerns signal that Square Point of Sale delivers reliable value through ease of use, portability, and all-in-one functionality. Some reviewers mention switching to cheaper processors as volume grows, and a few compare Square Point of Sale unfavorably to Clover for larger operations.

"Bad Customer Support and VERY Messy Feature Organization"

0.5/5

What do you like best about Square Point of Sale?

It's affordable with many features that you can add to fit the needs of your business. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Square Point of Sale?

It’s so troublesome to switch because it’s deeply integrated into so many aspects of my business, and that’s honestly what has kept me from switching. But it has the WORST customer support I’ve ever experienced in my entire life—truly, and this is not an exaggeration. The product itself also feels so messy that it’s nearly impossible to search for anything or find things where they used to be, because everything is constantly being reorganized or reshuffled under a different product line.

But the support is SO bad that I would not recommend it. I spent 2+ hours trying to understand why a discount wasn’t working as set up, and they escalated it all the way to advanced support, then “resolved” the issue without even telling me what they did or how it was fixed. So I lost 2 hours of my life AND revenue. Weebly aka Square online also has atrocious support which seems to be a separate team from the main square support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Square Point of Sale solving and how is that benefiting you?

A all-in-one solution at an affordable price. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
