One drawback I have found with App Engine is that handling various configurations gets more difficult as applications get bigger. It can take some time to determine where a certain logic is applied when there are several scripts, processes, and policies involved. Debugging might be slowed considerably when troubleshooting necessitates examining multiple platform components.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my experience, App Engine helps solve the problem of developing enterprise applications quickly while maintaining a structured environment. Instead of building systems completely from scratch, the platform provides reusable components and automation capabilities. This allows me to focus more on business logic and less on basic infrastructure. As a result, development cycles are shorter, processes become more automated, and it is easier to deliver applications that support business operations efficiently.

  ### 20. Empowers Citizen Developers with Intuitive Low-Code App Building

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2026

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

What I like most about ServiceNow App Engine is how it enables non-traditional developers—what ServiceNow calls “citizen developers”—to build and deploy production-grade applications without needing deep coding expertise. The low-code/no-code experience in App Engine Studio feels intuitive, and because everything is built natively on the Now Platform, I don’t have to worry as much about integration headaches or maintaining separate infrastructure.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

Honestly, the learning curve can be steeper than the “low-code” marketing suggests, especially once you move beyond simple builds. App Engine Studio works well for straightforward use cases, but the moment you need advanced scripting, custom APIs, or more complex data models, you’re back to relying on a seasoned ServiceNow developer. In that sense, the promise of true citizen development has real limits in practice.

Licensing cost is another pain point. App Engine licensing can get expensive quickly, particularly as you scale the number of apps or bring more collaborators into the mix. For mid-sized organizations, making a convincing ROI case to leadership often takes a lot of groundwork.

Performance can also become a concern with heavily customized apps, especially when you’re dealing with large data sets or complex client-side scripting. It isn’t always straightforward to pinpoint where the bottleneck is, which can make troubleshooting more time-consuming than expected.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using App Engine allows me to develop applications faster, automate business processes, and deliver solutions more efficiently. It improves productivity by reducing repetitive work and enables me to focus on designing better workflows and integrations. As a developer, it also helps maintain consistency with ServiceNow best practices while scaling solutions across the organization.

I like ServiceNow App Engine for its easy management of complex apps and its well-structured design. The various features, like flows and AI agents, help me think in different ways to solve problems. The AI parts and features really stand out to me and my clients, and they help us maintain our standing as industry leaders. The switch from SAP was worthwhile because ServiceNow App Engine offers a better development cycle with its low-code approach. The initial setup was surprisingly smooth as well, especially since we were already using ServiceNow in other areas like ITSM, which made it less of a hassle.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

I think file and overall data management can be improved in complex apps. It's hard to keep up with so much, so if features like better UI and readability are introduced, it will be better as per me.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I find ServiceNow App Engine easy to manage for complex apps with its well-structured features. It offers AI agents and flows that help me think differently when solving problems.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Srikanth A. | ServiceNow Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 14, 2026

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

I like most about ServiceNow App Engine is its ability to quickly build and automate business applications using low-code tools while maintaining governance and scalability on the ServiceNow Platform. I find the low-code tools like Flow Designer to make automation easy and fast, and I've used it to automate change requests creation and trigger notifications. **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 18, 2026

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

It actually bridges the gap between chaos and control. Business teams get to build their own workflows visually without waiting months on IT, but because it’s locked down with solid guardrails, it doesn't create a security nightmare. It turns a massive bottleneck into a quick afternoon project.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

The licensing costs are brutal, if we build a simple tool for the whole company, the per-user fees skyrocket. Plus, the moment we step outside the basic templates, we still need a specialized ServiceNow developer to write platform-specific code.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It kills the endless backlog of internal tooling requests. Instead of engineering getting bogged down building minor CRUD apps or basic approval workflows for business ops, those teams can build them themselves. The benefit? It keeps my plate clear for core product engineering and deep architecture work, rather than handling simple automation Jira tickets.

It explains potential problems and provides recommendations for improving applications and using best practices.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

Sometimes it can get "tripped up" or "confused" and I have to inquire about an issue several times before it finally acknowledges the problem and tries to correct it. The update set hierarchy is confusing.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use ServiceNow App Engine for rapid application proof of concept creation and updates. It reduces delivery time for POC applications, explains potential problems, and suggests improvements using no code and detailed execution plans with confirmation.

  ### 45. Licensing is very expensive especially duplicated if the resources using app engine and ITSM

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bindu M.

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2026

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

We like that it gives access to create multiple tables and roles

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

App engine is still a SN platform provisioned and we don’t like that it is licensed separately for users who already has access to ITSM. So businesses are not happy to use app engine since they have to pay for ITSM license and also App engine license. Really wish if it can be an embedded functionality which comes with ITSM so it helps with managing and campaigning more users to it.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It’s helping us in situations where we need to add specific roles and build custom workflows and solutions that are used by fewer business units, rather than being intended for all users.

  ### 46. Developing Apps Got Easy

	•	Deploy apps faster with governance built-in
	•	Maintain upgrade-safe configurations

Especially when you need to create custom operational workflows or internal tracking apps, App Engine Studio makes development much faster and cleaner.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

When building in App Engine Studio, debugging flow issues or business rule conflicts is not always very intuitive.
➡ Improvement: A more centralized and visual debugging console for low-code

2️⃣ More Flexibility in Complex Logic

For simple apps, low-code works great.
But for complex enterprise logic, we still need to switch to advanced scripting.
➡ Improvement: More advanced logic configuration options without leaving AES.

3️⃣ Version Control & Collaboration

Compared to traditional dev tools (like Git integration you’re familiar with), version tracking in App Engine could be more developer-friendly.
➡ Improvement: Stronger built-in branching and comparison features inside AES.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It takes away the efforts used in making and developing the Apps by removing the less or sometimes no coding required, and it has a very easy User Interface, making it more user friendly.

  ### 47. “a highly detail-oriented generalist”

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

He can handle virtually anything. With the flexibility to adapt to a wide range of business concepts, he’s able to go beyond traditional IT boundaries and create custom workflows and BI solutions.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

At times, he can be overly granular. As permissions become too fragmented, there’s a real risk of things becoming unmanageable. While citizen development is encouraged, leaving App Engine–based development completely uncontrolled can quickly lead to chaos.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A simple way to manage roles and permissions, along with a mechanism to instantly determine whether a given role is FF or a requester—and trigger alerts accordingly. Since the budget isn’t unlimited and citizen developers don’t always fully understand licensing policies, this kind of control is essential.

  ### 48. Build Smarter, Faster AI-Powered Apps with Ease and timely deliverable

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Krishna Kumar B. | Project Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

It’s useful for building smarter, faster applications by putting AI in place. The low-code/no-code approach enables quicker development and has saved me a good number of hours.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

It’s a bit expensive, and the learning curve feels slightly steeper than with other app engines. By comparison, I think it would be better if the pricing were based on features.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Time is the critical factor when developing workflows in a smart, structured way, and the built-in controls do a better job of guiding the process toward the final outcome I’m aiming for.

**What do you like best about ServiceNow App Engine?**

What I like best about ServiceNow App Engine is how easy and practical it feels to use in real work.

It allows you to build applications quickly without needing deep coding knowledge. The drag-and-drop approach, ready-made workflows, and smooth integration with existing ServiceNow modules save a lot of time and effort. I also like that everything—data, security, approvals, and automation—is already built into the platform, so you don’t have to worry much about setup or maintenance.

Overall, it feels reliable, efficient, and very business-friendly, especially when you need to deliver solutions fast without compromising on security or scalability.

**What do you dislike about ServiceNow App Engine?**

What I dislike about ServiceNow App Engine is mainly around flexibility and learning effort.

While it’s great for quick development, complex customizations can become difficult, especially when you go beyond standard low-code features and need advanced scripting. There’s also a learning curve for understanding ServiceNow concepts like tables, flows, and security roles, which can feel overwhelming at first.

Additionally, the platform is heavily dependent on the ServiceNow ecosystem, so customization options are limited compared to fully open frameworks. Licensing and cost can also be a concern, especially for smaller teams or simple use cases.

Overall, it’s powerful, but not always the most flexible or cost-effective option for highly customized or lightweight applications.

**What problems is ServiceNow App Engine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ServiceNow App Engine solves the problem of slow, manual business processes by enabling fast, low-code application development.

It benefits me by helping automate workflows quickly, reduce manual effort, and deliver secure, scalable solutions faster with less dependency on heavy coding.
