Scrivener Overview

What is Scrivener?

Scrivener is an integrated writing, outlining and research app that is tailor made for long writing projects. Since its launch in 2007 it has become the go-to for writers of all types. The project outline makes it easy to get an overview of your work and flip between sections. You can also split the screen and refer to research alongside your writing and drag and drop to rearrange your work. Write in any order, in sections as large or small as you like, and let Scrivener stitch it all together before submitting or publishing. However you write or whatever you're writing, Scrivener contains everything you need to get writing and keep writing. Scrivener is available for Mac, Windows and iPhone.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

The flexibility to organize, tag, re-organize, and print. I can create sub-documents with the tag/label system and print individual course content. The flexibility to copy/paste between documents is terrific. Collaboration in real-time is also a big plus, as well as Scrivener's platform pricing and reasonable pricing of updates. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

The formating options are fussy and hard to fine-tune. More tutorials and visual overviews of the formatting would be helpful. In addition to the Literature Latte Community, it would be great to have a regular Support team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Scrivener:

Take advantage of the very useful walk-through tutorial before you get started. Create multiple templates so you can easily compile and print documents. Scrivener is a useful tool but it does require a time commitment to set up and learn. Make sure to take advantage of the very useful walk-through tutorial before you dive in.

Take advantage of the ability to import from various sources. Keep documents focues on one subject per document - it's easy to copy and move sections between documents later.

Document structures can be a bit tricky at first. I recommend starting with the document structures recommended in the tutorial (titles, sections, paragraphs, etc.) and get to know the program before venturing into the customization realm. When you have tried a couple of documents, create your own templates to show off your business style. Download a test document in a couple of formats to get an idea of how the document template looks in word, pdf, etc. Create entire business plans or course content documents! What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

With Scrivener I can create and organize interconnected business plans, program overviews, and course content. Scrivener allows me to create multiple documents options, so I can use the same document in multiple places. I can collaborate with others and also copy or move sections between Scrivener documents. What do you like best about Scrivener?

When I'm writing, I need to keep things as organized as possible, and Scrivener makes that not only possible but easy and efficient with its organizational tools. It allows me to create multiple folders and manage my writing and outlines and research and characters how I want. It's ideal for working on a long project like a novel. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

Scrivener has so many options to let you customize how you want your layout and what's the best way to get the most out of your writing, so sometimes it can be tricky to know how to do something or if it's even an option. Usually, I will Google around and find someone who has done it and learn from them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Scrivener:

There is a free trial version of Scrivener you can try out to see how the software works. If you're looking for some excellent writing software, give Scrivener a try. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

Scrivener helps me keep highly organized in my writing, whether it's a book review I'm writing, a short story, or the chapter to a novel I'm working on. I've also learned you can include research links and details like photos and articles within Scrivener, so it's much easier to pull up that information when I need it. What do you like best about Scrivener?

I love that Scrivener doesn't only let you write your story, but keep all your notes in one place. Being able to track your word count and how close you are to your proget target is amazing too. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

I wish that using cloud services to sync your writing was a little more intuitive. If you have two devices open working on the same document, it's possible to save over changes without being able to get them back Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

As a writer, I work on both my fiction and nonfiction projects in Scrivener. I'm able to make my projects feel more legit by working in a scrivener file vs. Word or Google doc. Because it's a program made by writers for writers, it really can help with the struggle of focusing on your writing or not. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

It makes the process flow more easily, and it can be used for plotting as well as writing the actual book. It's great for tracking daily word counts, as well as setting daily/project word goals. Broad adoption in many countries and active support community. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

The developers haven't synchronized their production pipelines yet, so there are differences between the versions for Windows and MacOS. Compiling the final document can be a bit tricky, and takes careful thought to ensure formatting is set up properly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

Scrivener has a unique way of organizing and referencing notes. If you are dealing with a shorter text that you are planning to print out at some point, Microsoft Word is a reasonably good word processor. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

I started using Scrivener when I was writing my book, thinking it would be a great tool to help me stay organized. The software creator has a plethora of information online on using and getting the most out of the platform. So many things you can do with this software if you're willing to spend the time learning it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

I found I didn't have the time to spend learning how to maximize the benefits of Scrivener. I use it occasionally to create a board of lists to help stay organized, but that is probably an insult to the creator. I just found it was too complex for me. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Scrivener:

Invest some time in researching how to get the most out of the platform. It's a powerful tool! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

I've found it is a great organizational tool, and it helps me organize some of my lists. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

I love having all my notes, plot lines, and the manuscript itself all in one place. It is all streamlined and in one place. It is simple to learn to use, and then you can organize your notes and story elements however it works best for you. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

I don't particularly appreciate that there is not a setup or built-in way to save to the cloud automatically. The compiling is a bit technical, and finding the information I needed to do that was daunting, but that is only a process one needs to concern themself with once the story is complete. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Scrivener:

Scrivener is a great tool to use if you would like an easy way to keep all your notes together. If you are on the fence due to the price, I guarantee it is worth it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

Organization of story notes and ability to switch where scenes go. All the information you need is easy to access. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

Asa novelist, I've been using Scrivener for years. This affordable writing solution doesn't make it easy to write a book--it's never easy--but it does make it easier. You can easily keep track of chapters, sections, and scenes, keep notes, with images if you like, export to a variety of formats, see your book as a storyboard, and much more.

Scrivener has a ton of features, and I'm still learning them. If I want to do something I haven't done before, I can research how to do it on the Literature and Latte website (makers of Scrivener) and chances are, there's a cool trick to accomplish it. You don't need to know everything Scrivener can do to use it effectively. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

The aesthetics of Scrivener are pretty basic, and I wish the software had more display options, like night mode. Allowing writers to change colors and themes would be fun. These things aren't necessary but would be nice. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Scrivener:

I've tried similar book-writing software, and none are as feature-rich and easy to use as Scrivener. If you're looking for a way to make writing books or screenplays easier, Scrivener is the best solution out there. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

Scrivener makes it easier to organize and write my novels, and to keep track of scenes, characters, and so on. It's not the only solution I use to keep track of my stories, but Scrivener works much better for early drafts than traditional word processors. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

Scrivener is designed for writers and allows you to write content in small chunks when inspiration hits. That allows us to gradually compile our content as we research, then shuffle it around into a final document. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

Like many software products, there's a bit of learning to do. But once you have understood the basics it's a very easy application to use. There's plenty of high quality tutorials on the developer's website. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

Compiling content for books and training courses has always been difficult - some word processors regularly corrupt formatting and having separate files in a file system is hard to manage. Scrivener gives us a central and secure place to create and collaborate. AND it automatically saves and backs files up. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Scrivener?

I like the bulletin board that I can easily and quickly do a brain dump of all my thoughts. It's then a breeze to rearrange and organize them as you would notecards. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Scrivener?

It's a bit challenging to figure out without spending some time going through the tutorials. The program author does have a ton of tutorials available, though, and there is plenty to learn. It just takes time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Scrivener solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use Scrivener primarily as an organizational tool, keeping me on point with my tasks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
