Install is three lines in the Gemfile, a config file, and a deploy. You're looking at real data in about five minutes. N+1 detection and slow-query analysis are the killer features for any Rails app. Scout points you straight at the offending controller action and ActiveRecord call pattern, so you can land a fix in one pass. App traces give per-request code-level visibility that's been useful for chasing down regressions after deploys. Pricing is realistic for small and mid-sized teams in a way the Datadog and New Relic tier just isn't. **What do you dislike about Scout Monitoring?** The UI is the main thing keeping this from a 5. It feels at least one generation behind where modern observability tooling has landed. Navigation is still mostly link-and-page-load rather than the fast, filterable, drill-down interactions you get from newer tools. Time-range manipulation, faceted filtering, and dashboard composition could all be much more interactive. It carries on various in-built tools & features that simply require one-click gestures to obtain insights. It is also best when it comes to analyzing certain bottlenecks of our applications once we get to know that a customer is facing an issue. We effectively identify those incidents and perform RCA for resolving the difficulties faced by our customers through Scout APM's performance insights. **What do you dislike about Scout Monitoring?** Since plenty of features are provided by Scout APM, an intermediate experience level with hands-on is required for working effectively on its platform. It may seem overwhelming to start with its features but as we progress, we got adapted to it and we figured best practices offered by Scout APM o find the problem areas in our application. Further improvements can be made to its Dashboard so that it can accustom new users & offer convenience to them while handling evaluations using Scout APM. **What problems is Scout Monitoring solving and how is that benefiting you?** We implement Scout Agents to collect information about our application metrics such as transaction traces, sanitized SQL query statements, CPU & memory usage and error counts. These Agents check if the overall execution time is at least 5 ms. If it's less than the threshold, then the current span is effectively removed and time is allocated to the corresponding parent span. We also store our database calls using Scout Agents along with external HTTP requests & its libraries. They are processed through Scout APM's call aggregation feature which gives detailed metrics & backtraces that are essential for performing Root Cause Analysis. ### 18. Especially when working on legacy architecture. Fixing and pointing to leakage is a different beast on itself. Implementing scout APM help me with that. Ease of implementing and wide support mean it is easy to setup and modify. **What do you dislike about Scout Monitoring?** No clear legend on graph color when comparing improvement. Once I spent quite a time figure out if the fix improve things or make things worse. Scout makes good use of modern web visualization tools to present data in ways that are easy to understand and interpret. A particularly valuable feature is the ability to compare performance from two different time periods of varying length. The alerts function lets us set up fine-grained notifications when certain metrics aren't in the ranges we like. This is really helpful. Scout's pricing is affordable for a small SAAS business like mine — the cost-benefit versus other providers of similar services is a slam-dunk. **What do you dislike about Scout Monitoring?** It would be great if Scout offered a longer look-back period than 7 days. It can sometimes be a little slow to process query requests, but given the scope of data analyzed that's pretty understandable. The app does seem to hold more data than simply "the past seven days", but you can only see that much data at once. There are of course tools that provide finer-grained or larger-scale performance data analysis, but they are priced exponentially higher than Scout, and often feature per-server based pricing rather than Scout's simple and predictable request-volume-based pricing. **What problems is Scout Monitoring solving and how is that benefiting you?** We're able to identify endpoints with performance issues easily, and address them, speeding up the app. With Appdex, Scout also provides a simple overall metric for app performance that provides peace of mind (or the opposite when necessary). Scout's alerts have given us a heads up when usage was heading in a direction that needed watching but before AWS's auto-scaling kicks in. ### 22. It shows queries and how long each of them took. which helps finding bottlenecks. It is very UI friendly and shows the exact lines of code for where things took place. It also shows response time and throughput graph for each endpoint to easily spot if there is anything that is out of ordinary. Also, It shows metrics across all the transaction for each endpoint which is very helpful (Shows average total time for each transactions and the percentage of the time consumed for that endpoint). In addition to identifying or diagnose slow endpoints. It is very useful tool to diagnose the presence of N + 1 queries. It has n + 1 insight which analyzes the application for N + 1 queries consuming over 150 ms. This also brings you to exact line of code where it is happening (with backtraces) and also shows the sql query for the backtrace. **What do you dislike about Scout Monitoring?** It would be nice to have more customizable time for filtering. In comparison to new relics where you can set start and end time, scout only let you to select 7 days max. This is not too bad.
