  ### 5. Powerful but Demanding: A Real-World Take on SAP Transportation Management

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shahabad U. | Quality Production Operator | Cleanroom (GMP Environment), Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2026

**What do you like best about SAP Transportation Management?**

In my personal opinion, what I like most about **SAP Transportation Management** is the visibility and control it brings to transport operations. It takes something that can often feel chaotic—multiple shipments, carriers, and deadlines—and puts it into a structured, easy-to-follow system.

I also appreciate how it supports better decision-making. The planning and optimisation features help you choose more efficient routes and manage costs without relying purely on manual judgement. It feels like you’re working with the system rather than constantly fixing issues after they happen.

Another thing I value is how well it integrates with **SAP S/4HANA**. Having connected data across procurement, warehousing, and transportation reduces errors and saves time, which is especially important in regulated industries.

Overall, for me, it’s the combination of visibility, smarter planning, and integration that makes it stand out, even though it does require some effort to learn and implement properly.

**What do you dislike about SAP Transportation Management?**

In my personal opinion, while **SAP Transportation Management** is powerful, there are a few things that can be frustrating.

The biggest drawback is the complexity. It’s not very intuitive at the start, and getting comfortable with it takes time. For new users, it can feel overwhelming, especially compared to more user-friendly logistics tools. You often need proper training before you can really use it effectively.

Another issue is the implementation effort. Setting it up isn’t quick or simple—it requires a lot of configuration, alignment with business processes, and sometimes external consultants. If this isn’t done properly, the system can feel heavy and harder to use than it should be.

I also find that flexibility can be limited at times. While it’s highly structured (which is good for control), making small changes or adapting to unique business needs can take longer than expected.

Integration with **SAP S/4HANA** is a strength, but it can also be a challenge. If your data isn’t clean or processes aren’t well aligned, issues can quickly ripple across systems.

Overall, it’s a very capable system, but the learning curve, implementation complexity, and occasional lack of flexibility can make it challenging in day-to-day use.

**What problems is SAP Transportation Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my personal experience, **SAP Transportation Management** is mainly solving the problem of *lack of visibility and coordination* in transportation.

Before using a system like this, transport activities can feel very fragmented—shipments tracked in spreadsheets, communication happening over emails, and constant follow-ups with carriers. It’s easy for things to slip through the cracks. SAP TM brings everything into one place, so I can see shipments, delays, and statuses in real time. That alone reduces a lot of stress and uncertainty in day-to-day operations.

It’s also solving the issue of *inefficient planning*. Without a structured system, route planning and load optimisation often depend on manual judgement, which isn’t always optimal. With SAP TM, planning is more data-driven—it suggests better routes, consolidates loads, and helps reduce unnecessary costs. For me, that means less firefighting and more proactive decision-making.

Another big problem it addresses is *poor integration between functions*. Transportation doesn’t operate in isolation—it connects with procurement, warehousing, and customer delivery. Because it integrates well with **SAP S/4HANA**, I don’t have to deal with duplicate data entry or mismatched information. Everything flows more smoothly, which saves time and reduces errors.

Overall, the benefit to me is a shift from reactive work—chasing updates, fixing issues—to a more controlled and efficient way of managing transportation. It improves reliability, saves time, and gives me more confidence in the decisions I’m making.

Plus, it hooks up with SAP S/4HANA, so your orders, shipments, and costs are always in sync with your main business stuff, leading to fewer mistakes and smoother shipping.

**What do you dislike about SAP Transportation Management?**

So, one of the big headaches with SAP Transportation Management is just how complicated it is. It's packed with features, but getting transportation setups, pricing, and how it figures out the best way to ship things dialed in can really drag on and usually needs folks who've been doing TM for a while. If you're new to it, it can be a tough climb to get the hang of it, especially if you're coming from something more straightforward.

Getting it set up and connected to other systems can also be a big undertaking, especially if you've got a bunch of different shipping companies and areas you're dealing with. Fine-tuning how it runs and testing out complicated shipping plans can chew up a lot of time, and the price tag for the software can be pretty hefty, which might be a sticking point for smaller shipping outfits.

**What problems is SAP Transportation Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SAP Transportation Management addresses the difficulties associated with overseeing intricate transportation operations that suffer from insufficient visibility and necessitate manual coordination. Rather than depending on disparate tools or spreadsheets, this solution integrates planning, execution, and freight settlement into a unified platform. This integration streamlines the management of shipments, carriers, routes, and associated costs in a systematic manner.

As a result, it has enhanced visibility throughout the transportation network and aided in lowering freight expenses through improved planning and optimization strategies. The real-time interaction with SAP S/4HANA guarantees that orders, deliveries, and freight charges remain synchronized, thereby minimizing errors and the need for manual adjustments. In summary, it fosters more efficient logistics processes, enhances collaboration with carriers, and ensures a higher reliability in on-time deliveries.

  ### 29. Effortless Shipment Tracking and Seamless SAP Integration

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sree K. | Software Engineer II in Test, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2025

**What do you like best about SAP Transportation Management?**

What I appreciate most is how straightforward it is to track our shipments and monitor deliveries. There’s no need to dig through multiple screens to find the information you need. The dashboards are well-organized, and I was able to get comfortable with the system after just a few uses. Setting everything up did require some collaboration between our team and IT, and we encountered a few issues with older data formats, but nothing that caused major delays. I also found customer support to be very responsive, they were quick to join calls whenever we ran into problems, which I really valued.

We rely on this tool almost daily, especially during our busiest shipping periods. There are plenty of features included, and I’m still discovering new ones, but I like having route planning and cost tracking options available in one place. Another big plus is how well it integrates with our other SAP tools, so I don’t have to waste time re-entering information. While it isn’t perfect, no tool is, it’s definitely much less stressful than managing everything through email or spreadsheets.

**What do you dislike about SAP Transportation Management?**

Honestly, there are times when the sheer number of menus and options can feel overwhelming. It’s frustrating when you just want to accomplish a simple task but end up having to click through several different screens. I’ve also noticed that the system can be slower than I’d prefer, particularly when many users are on at once or when we’re processing large batches of data.

**What problems is SAP Transportation Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SAP Transportation Management has really helped us streamline our shipping and delivery processes. Instead of chasing down emails or wondering where a truck is, I can simply check the dashboard for updates. This has removed much of the confusion from tracking shipments, planning routes, and managing costs. Previously, we relied on spreadsheets and had to gather information from various sources, which sometimes led to things slipping through the cracks. Now, I have a much clearer overview of all our shipments. It’s much easier to notice if something is delayed or needs to be adjusted, and we save a lot of time by not having to update everything manually. Integrating with our other SAP applications has reduced errors and improved our reporting, allowing us to make decisions more quickly. Overall, it’s made the whole process much less stressful.

It often feels like everything takes 10–15 extra clicks or additional data entry just to finish what should be a simple task, such as creating a freight order or making a quick adjustment to one.

**What problems is SAP Transportation Management solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It eliminates the “black hole” where you don’t know where a shipment is until it’s already late. Rather than having planners spend hours in spreadsheets trying to figure out which truck to use or how to group orders, the system relies on algorithms (the VSR optimizer) to recommend the most cost-effective routes and modes.
