What I like best about SAP Responsible Design and Production is how it helps bring sustainability tracking and regulatory compliance into a more structured and measurable process instead of handling it manually across multiple systems.

For our team, one of the biggest advantages has been the visibility into packaging data, material usage, and environmental impact reporting. Earlier, gathering this information for compliance and internal reporting required a lot of spreadsheet-based tracking and coordination between operations, procurement, and compliance teams.

The platform also makes it easier to monitor extended producer responsibility (EPR) requirements and evolving sustainability regulations across different regions. Having centralized reporting and traceability reduced a significant amount of manual effort during compliance reviews.


We also appreciated the analytics and reporting capabilities because leadership teams now have better visibility into sustainability metrics and packaging optimization opportunities.

It will help to gather information on the materials, impact on the environment, and compliance regulations in one system. As such, it will be easy to assess whether the products comply with sustainability objectives and other compliance rules. The other positive aspect is its integration with other SAP applications, thus making sustainability an integrated part of your business operations.

The platform is rather complicated to use initially for those teams that do not have enough experience dealing with sustainability reporting or regulations. I really like SAP Responsible Design and Production for its real-time visibility into packaging and waste data across operations. The automatic calculation of EPR fees and plastic taxes for multiple countries is extremely beneficial. I appreciate the strong support it provides for circular economy and sustainable packaging goals, as well as its integration with SAP S/4HANA and existing ERP systems. The centralized sustainability and compliance data management is a big plus and helps reduce manual work in ESG and regulatory reporting. I find it better at tracking recycled content and material circularity, and it supports zero landfill and waste reduction initiatives. It enables data-driven sustainable product and packaging design decisions and helps organizations reduce compliance risks and avoid penalties. The useful dashboards and analytics for sustainability KPIs are something I value. The improved traceability of packaging materials across the supply chain and support for Scope 3 emissions and packaging sustainability tracking are quite helpful. The 'What-If' tester is handy for assessing tax impacts of new materials, and SAP handles global tax laws in the background smoothly. It creates a Single Source of Truth, letting the Sustainability Office pull their own reports, saving us from constant data requests. It moves all manual work into one automated hub.

The system requires very detailed information about every material, so the initial 'data cleaning' is a huge and time-consuming task for the production team. Setting everything up to work correctly with our existing factory systems is a big project that usually requires specialized experts to handle. Because there are so many buttons and settings, the screen can look a bit overwhelming and it takes a long time to learn how to use it properly. If a small detail is missing in our material records, the reports won't work, which puts a lot of pressure on us to keep every single piece of data perfect. The biggest challenge is Data Readiness. We realized our existing material records weren't detailed enough for the system's requirements, leading to a massive manual cleanup effort. The initial setup was a heavy lift because our existing records didn't have the specific details—like exact plastic percentages—that the system requires to work. Updating thousands of material files to meet the new requirements took the team several months of manual 'data cleaning' before we could even start. Linking the new cloud software to our current factory systems was technically difficult and required specialized IT experts to ensure the information moved correctly. The interface is quite complex with many new features to learn, so it took us a long time to feel confident using the system during our daily shifts.

Well generally speaking it is very helpful I used it for a company making commercial used industrial products for their customers and SAP really helped in ensuring the proper design of the product and manufacturing procedures/techniques in compliance with sustainability, quality, safety, environmental etc. requirements. Since my work was mostly on PLM and PP modules, it really helped me to manage the product data from design stage to the end production stage including the design changes according to the standards ensuring the feasibility of design in terms of environmental and safety aspects. I can say PLM and PP were easy to use because I was a new user when I first used it for a project in a company, during my day to day use I found customer service helpful in need.

Things that are not easy when integrating with different modules, some modules can be very tricky, also requires attention to make sure all the data is transferred in a systemic manner across different systems
