It had a 3-schema architecture. The Physical Schema specified how data was physically deployed on hardware. The Conceptual Schema was a logical view of the data from a business perspective. The External Schema was specification of views of the data as seen by the Users. Thus each schema could be autonomous and interact with the others in a systematic, structured, and flexible manner. The heart of any application, is its data dictionaries, managing schemas, made of tables and its relationships along delete constraints (Cascade or Restricted or Nullify) irrespective of backend database.
